Caitie Hurst enjoys creating music with cool beats. But she wants God’s message in the music to make an impact. "God has used songs to reveal the truth to me and get me through challenging experiences.”

Caitie, a native of Hendersonville, Tennessee, burst onto the Christian contemporary music scene with her standout debut hit single, “How Could I Be Silent” in 2018. Shortly after, she dropped an EP with the same name (song standouts include “Walkin’ on the Water” and “Nothing to Hide). Then, in 2020, Caitie dropped At All Times, an EP featuring “All The Things,” “Yours,” and “Recover.”

The rising star has emerged as one of the top new female vocalists in Christian music. Not to mention that she’s a great role model for girls. Her entire catalog ministers to me and my family (my wife and I have three young daughters).

My girls have really connected with the messages in Caitie’s biblically inspired lyrics, representing how true happiness and her identity come from her relationship with God. Much of Caitie’s music ministers to anyone struggling with fear and self-doubt.

With comparisons to contemporaries ranging from pop icon Taylor Swift to Christian artist Britt Nicole, Caitie exhibits the passion and confidence of a seasoned artist. Her songwriting is real, positive, and vulnerable. And her upbeat songs are a great way to celebrate our freedom in Christ.

My middle daughter, Cassandra, brought Caitie’s new song, “Well Done,” to my attention. I spoke with the artist about the catchy new piece.

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

I wrote “Well Done” about two years ago. Even though my record label didn’t select it for the album (I’m no longer with the label), I kept thinking about the song. The Lord put it on my heart that I should release it.

When I wrote it, I remember coming into the songwriting session and feeling deep in my heart, that whatever my job is doesn’t define me as a person, and what matters isn’t what I do, but how I love people every day, and how Jesus lived His life.

I wanted to write a song to let people know that they don’t need to have a job in ministry to live their life well. But you can do anything and love the people around you that’ll please and honor the Lord.

What Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

1 Corinthians 10:31 (NIV): "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."

Matthew 25:23 (NIV): “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!”

Romans 8:28 (VOICE): "We are confident that God is able to orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan."

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV): “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Romans 12:2 (VOICE): "Do not allow this world to mold you in its own image. Instead, be transformed from the inside out by renewing your mind. As a result, you will be able to discern what God wills and whatever God finds good, pleasing, and complete."

1 John 4:18 (NKJV): "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love."

Philippians 1:6 (NIV): "Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."

Philippians 4:13 (NKJV): "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

What is the takeaway message?

When Jesus gave the Great Commission, not everyone had to work for a church, work missions, or write Christian music. But whatever you do, love people.

Sometimes, I fall into the mindset that I need to be on the go, work hard at my job, and achieve success. I thought that I had to work hard to attain my idea of success, based on how many people liked my music. God helped me to see that shouldn’t be my goal.

When you move so fast, you can lose what matters. What I do that has lasting kingdom effects are meeting people and praying with them after hearing their life stories. The Lord brought that picture to my mind and helped me realize that’s what matters to Him.

Jesus took time to talk to people and made them feel significant. I never want to be too busy that I don’t stop and see people. I don’t want to miss an opportunity for the Lord to use me.

Lyrics

I just wanna be somebody
They all know that I know I can be
But I’m so scared
What if no one cares

And if all of my good intentions
Gets angled by blind ambitions
It’s never enough
Nothing’s ever enough

I’m tired of trying to find who I should be
But I bet you’re tired of trying to get my eyes to see

You don’t care if I’m a barber or a baker
You don’t care if I’m a poet or a painter
So who cares if this world measures me a failure
If what I do, I do with love
You’ll say, well done
Well done

I just wanna see the beauty
In all of the ordinary
All the little things
the everyday dreams

While we just keep moving faster
We’re losing the things that matter

If everything we’re trying to find is getting left behind

Searching for the meaning in my life
While you’ve already told me where to find it a thousand times

But you don’t care if I’m a captain or a sailor
Or if I’ll end inside a mansion or a trailer
So, who cares if this world measures me a failure
If what I do, I do with love
You’ll say, well done

I used to think that to be great
it meant the world will know my name
But through your eyes I see the world so differently
All the awards and fame
All the earthly things will fade
When I stand before the Lord above
You won’t ask me what I did
But did I love

You don't care if I can sing a pretty solo
Or if my fans will wait for hours to come and see my show

Why do I care how many people like my photos
If what I do, I do with love
You’ll say, well done

Closing Thoughts

“Well Done” celebrates the freedom we’re promised in God's Holy Word. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."

If we believe in Christ, we’re new creations on the inside. We have freedom on the cross of the Savior. We're free from fears, addictions, insecurities, and perfectionism. Jesus came to die for us so that we can truly live in Him.

This song’s message is about trusting God and confessing your failures or struggles to Him and others. Lay your burdens at the feet of Jesus. He'll take them away, making your burdens light. God wants to hear from you.

“Well Done” includes an inspiring testimony of submission to the Lord by praying about life’s struggles. Our weaknesses are nothing to hide.

This song challenges me to think about my daily choices. Proverbs 12:9 says, "Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment."

Many people rationalize sinful behavior by thinking little white lies don't matter. But know that God lives with His children all the time. So, stop to think about your daily choices and how to best walk with God moment to moment.

Biblically, we're commanded to spread the Good News of the Gospel. In Mark 16:15, Jesus commands: "Preach the Gospel to every creature." There are no conditions or exceptions in that command. It's more of a lifestyle that Jesus calls us to live, as Christians.

Do you feel your heart stirring for a revival? The source of that stirring is only by the Spirit and the Word of God. Once you have the light of the Holy Spirit, you can show that light to others, as you live your daily life. If you're doing everything for God's glory, then you're demonstrating Jesus' love in every encounter you have with people.

The song is filled with the biblical truth of 1 Corinthians 10:31: "Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." The beauty of grace is that it's freely given, not something we deserve or earn.

The Holy Spirit gives us a new life. We no longer have to live with guilt, fears, or worries. We're born again. Our old life is dead. Believing the song’s words is a great way to work on the disciplines of self-examination and prayer.

Faith is when we are empty of ourselves and filled with Him and His Holy Spirit. I can’t get enough of the biblical truth in the chorus, “You don’t care if I can sing a pretty solo/Or if my fans will wait for hours to come and see my show/Why do I care how many people like my photos/If what I do, I do with love/You’ll say, well done.” Amen to that.
