The newest Centricity Music artist Caitie Hurst has released her debut singles "How Could I Be Silent" and "Nothing To Hide." My daughters are 18, 14 and 11 years old, and Caitie's music is perfect for them. It has been one of my missions in sharing the biblical truth behind songs to help women who are bombarded with negative messages from the world regarding identity and purpose to know that their true identity and purpose is found in God.

"How Could I Be Silent" is all about committing our hearts to God, with Caitie excitedly singing "how could I be silent when there's all this joy inside my heart?" I had the chance to speak with Caitie about "How Could I Be Silent."

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

This is my life story in a song. I was saved at a really young age, when I was eight years old, but I was never one to go share with other people what God had done in my life for fear of what they might think about me. As I grew up and walked with the Lord, I started to realize after all that He has done for me, there's no way I can be silent about that.

I wrote this song with two of my really good friends who have known me for a while. I told them I wanted to write a song about how when I was younger I thought one way about my faith, and now that I'm older and God has taught me so many things, I have a whole new boldness about sharing my faith. When I first became a believer, I was very shy and was not outspoken about my faith. I was very insecure and lived in fear of what people thought about me. I loved the Lord and read my Bible, but every time my youth pastors would invite me to share my faith or invite a friend to church, I wouldn't do it because I was worried about my reputation more than about sharing the Gospel. I saw other friends who shared their faith and were outspoken, and I always wished that I could do that, but I was afraid.

That was how we started with the song, and then we progressed to how could I be silent about what the Lord has done in my life?

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Romans 1:16 (NKJV): "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek."

Acts 20:24 (NKJV): "But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God."

Matthew 5:14-16 (MSG): "Here's another way to put it: You're here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We're going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting you on a light stand. Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand--shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven."

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV): "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."

Acts 13:22 (NKJV): "And when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, 'I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.'"

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV): "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Philippians 4:13 (NKJV): "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV): "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

Romans 8:28 (VOICE): "We are confident that God is able to orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan."

1 John 4:18 (NKJV): "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love."

What is the takeaway message?

There was a time in my life when I lived as though I was ashamed of the Gospel. How can we be quiet about the way God has changed our lives? My hope is that as you hear this song, you are encouraged to share your faith and the Gospel and to not be bound by the fear of what other people might think of you.

The reason I wanted to write this song is that I know that I'm not the only one who has dealt with fear about sharing my faith. I know many people want to share about the Lord, but they are afraid of what people think about them.

I want to bridge the gap between songs that sound like popular radio and songs that hold lyrics that are actually meaningful and communicate the Gospel. God has used songs to reveal truth to me and get me through challenging experiences. I want to create music that has cool beats, but where ultimately it's the Word of God within the songs making the impact.

How could I be silent?
I used to wonder if I could ever by loved
Never gonna live up, should I give up? Will I ever be enough?
What I didn't understand is You love me as I am

I don't care what anybody thinks about me
You're the only One that I need
No, I don't care what anybody thinks about me

How could I be silent when there's all this joy inside my heart
How could I be quiet when you gave me light to pierce the dark
How could I be silent, I will not be silent
Even though my sin had left crimson, you washed away those stains
And the grace You've given is the reason I'll never be the same
How could I be silent, I will not be silent, How could I be silent

I didn't wanna stand out, kept my head down, insecure inside my skin
Always looking back over, my shoulder, making sure I blended in
Then you gave me a new name, and I never was the same

How could I be silent when there's all this joy inside my heart
How could I be quiet when you gave me light to pierce the dark
How could I be silent, I will not be silent
Even though my sin had left crimson, you washed away those stains
And the grace You've given is the reason I'll never be the same
How could I be silent, I will not be silent, How could I be silent

You're the One that I, One that I, One that I need
You're the One that I, One that I, One that I need
You're the One that I, One that I, One that I need
(I don't care what anybody thinks about me)
You're the One that I, One that I, One that I need
I don't care what anybody thinks about me

Being a Christian father of three young daughters, this song reflects the yearning for Jesus to make us whole that I pray for my daughters to feel in their hearts as well. I love how this song celebrates God's sovereignty, professing that God is the ultimate ruler over our lives, while also expressing the truth of our earthly challenges.

This song has really been resonating with me as I realize that Jesus commands us to trust God completely no matter our circumstances or personal distractions or concerns. The song is about not being ashamed of the Gospel of Christ. This is a wonderful song of encouragement to live as a light and know that in Christ, we can do anything. God will never fail us or forsake us until the work of the Lord is finished.

We have the very love of God in our hearts. We have faith to see the impossible come to pass, and we have a God that's waiting to back us up in this mission. Ask God to open your eyes today. Ask Him to reveal His footsteps so you can follow them. They will lead you to some amazing places. Spend time with God, and let Him redeem and restore you. Although many of us may know Proverbs 3:5-6, Solomon wrote that to us to remind us today about the importance of trusting in God with ALL our hearts. We can only hope as Christians to live for our eternity with Jesus and not be afraid to stand firm, to be willing to lay our lives down for Him, especially when we think about what He did in laying His life down for us on the Cross. We are challenged in God's Word in Matthew 5:14-16 as believers to not hide the light of Jesus that is in us as His redeemed sons and daughters, to remember that "God is not a secret to be kept."

I love how the music of this song matches the excitement being expressed lyrically. Our God is worthy of all of our praise, and we'll be singing and dancing before Him for eternity. This song gives believers a foretaste of that celebration. God tells us in the Bible that with faith, we can do anything in Christ. I'm completely convicted by the strong lyrics and find immense comfort in this song filled with biblical truth. If you are looking for a firm foundation in your life, make these lyrics your personal prayer: "You're the One that I need, I don't care what anybody thinks about me." Amen to that!
