After being a worship pastor for 10 years, upcoming artist Andrew Kurtz started writing and releasing his own music after this life-changing phrase from God: “I’ve changed your assignment.” And, since then, nothing has been the same.
After this calling, so many questions ran through Andrew’s mind. The artist went through many journeys of healing from past trauma and tragedies, fought so many spiritual battles, and overcame so many challenges. So, he thought how could he bring any value as an artist? Why would anyone want to listen to his music? Is he even a good enough musician to enter that realm?
The artist had always loved writing songs for the church. He loved writing music from his heart to God that was birthed from his personal prayer and devotional time. But, he never pursued anything further.
At the end of the day, every question he had couldn’t change what he felt when God spoke to him. When he finally said yes to God’s call, it turned out that his story of healing, growth, and trusting in God was exactly what people were needing to hear.
Since the day of his calling, Andrew has been on a mission; healing the world with music by encouraging and inspiring people to get back up again. I had the opportunity to speak to Andrew about his music and his mission to reach people through his music.
Talk about your recent single “Baptized.”
There is something inherently powerful and inspiring about watching someone get baptized. To me, baptism is an outward expression of an inner faith in Jesus; making one’s faith public, telling the world that “I have decided to follow Jesus.” It’s beautiful to watch someone come out of the waters of baptism and know how much that moment means.
I wanted to write a song celebrating that, something that was joyful, fun, and enthusiastic. In my own life, I know how overjoyed I felt at my own baptism many years ago. As a minister who now has the privilege of baptizing others, I know the excitement that so many experiences in their baptisms.
Capturing those feelings, the spiritual significance of baptism and that energy in a song was so much fun for me, and my prayer is that this song resonates with listeners all over.
If you’ve been baptized, I pray this song reminds you of how much meaning that moment had. If you haven’t, I hope it encourages you to take that step. You will truly find freedom like no other.
You’ve been a worship leader for close to a decade while also pursuing music. How do they influence each other?
I still lead worship and love every moment of it. I’m happy I can still lead worship at a multi-campus church, as well as lead the worship department. To me, worship will always be part of my life.
How does that influence me to pursue a music career? Well, I believe my ministry experience is one of the most valuable things about my music. I don’t think of them as two separate things, but rather as two sides of the same coin.
I pursue music with a ministry mindset—if it’s not encouraging people, healing people, and pointing people to Jesus, then I don’t want to do it. Releasing my own music is simply another way for me to be able to do that.
The past year was long for all of us. What are you taking from this past year into the final half of 2021?
The challenges of this past year took most of us by surprise. Certain times of life often reveal things about us that don't come in normal, day-to-day life. For me, I realized that I often move through life so fast that I don’t take time to enjoy the people and blessings that surround me.
Since that realization, I’ve been intentional to slow down and truly value the wonderful gifts God has given me. One of the major ways I’ve done that is by being very intentionally available for my family. I try to spend a lot of quality time with them, cook for them, help them move, send encouraging text messages, and more. I’ve re-learned that prioritizing the right things takes intentionality, they don’t just happen by accident.
What is currently pushing you to continue to write and record faith-based music and lyrics?
I mentioned before that I feel my purpose is healing the world through music by encouraging and inspiring others to get back up again. I really mean that; it’s not something that I came up with to sound spiritual or like I have justification for a selfish hobby. I truly feel that God has given me a passion for helping people grow spiritually as well as a passion for music.
And, those come together in writing, recording, and releasing this faith-based music. It’s not just a dream, it’s a purpose God has put in my heart--and it’s not an easy one. I can think of many different paths that would be much easier to pursue.
But, those paths are not what God has called me to. I try to live my entire life led by the Holy Spirit, so this is simply me doing what I feel I’ve been told.
What’s next for you?
I’m working on new music, so stay tuned. I have really been inspired by blues and jazz music recently, so you’ll hear those influences in what comes out later this year. Also, as always, the lyrics I write are what I feel like God is speaking to me very specifically to share with others. So, you’ll hear messages that will be very relevant to the challenges our world has been experiencing lately.
How can we be praying for you?
Honestly, I would love for you to pray for my music to reach as many people as possible. On one hand, I'm genuinely content with whatever audience God brings. But, on the other hand, it’s nice to know that a lot of people are hearing the message you feel God has given you to share. Also, I don’t know if I would really feel like myself if I didn’t also share that I’d love to pray for you. If there’s a way I can pray for you, please email me at email@example.com. I’d love to hear from you and believe in you for what God is doing in your life
