Centricity Music artist Natalie Layne is quickly emerging as one of the most compelling new voices in Christian music. Known for her gift for encouragement, she brings an infectious, upbeat musical style, layering her strong, distinctive vocals over memorable, hook-driven melodies. Layne’s music is both uplifting and authentic, and she continues to establish herself as a positive role model, especially for younger listeners.
Her songwriting is real, positive, and vulnerable, and her biblically inspired lyrics point to a deeper sense of identity and true joy found in a relationship with God. Her music has especially connected with families, offering messages that uplift and inspire across generations.
Her new single, “The Long Way,” reflects that same heart, offering a hopeful message about trusting God’s timing and choosing faith amid uncertainty. With polished production and a warm, expressive vocal performance, the song captures the beauty of surrender and the journey of relying on God’s plan, even when it doesn’t follow a direct path.
I had the chance to speak with Natalie about her new song “The Long Way.”
What is the personal message behind this song?
God often takes people on a winding back road rather than a direct path, transforming the journey into a deeper, character-shaping experience focused on knowing Jesus, rather than just reaching the destination.
I view "the long way" as a form of God's kindness, providing an opportunity to see things and grow in ways that a direct route would not allow. It’s designed to be a comforting anthem for those who feel stuck or face detours, reminding listeners that God is actively working on their character during the delay.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Philippians 4:7 (NKJV): "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
James 1:2-4 (NIV): “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
Psalm 28:7 (NLT): "The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust Him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving."
Psalm 16:11 (NKJV): "You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore."
Psalm 30:11-12 (VOICE): “You did it: You turned my deepest pains into joyful dancing; You stripped off my dark clothing and covered me with joyful light. You have restored my honor. My heart is ready to explode and erupt in new songs. It's impossible to keep quiet. Eternal one, my God, my life-giver, I will thank You forever.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV): "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here."
Philippians 1:6 (NIV): “Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:13 (NKJV): “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
What is the takeaway message?
In most good things in life, the Lord takes longer than we would like. He could do it in a moment, but more times than not, He doesn’t take us straight from point A to point B. Instead, He takes us along the back roads.
Along the way, something begins to shift. The struggle becomes worthwhile because the traveler comes to know God more deeply, eventually caring less about the original goal and more about Jesus' presence. The interesting thing is that once you reach the destination—even if you receive the very thing you were asking for—you care less about it if you’ve taken the long way. It’s no longer about the outcome, but about how you experienced more of Jesus in the process.
Lyrics
I’m the kind of heart that likes to know right where I’m going I would take the highway over dirt roads any day I would rather speed things up than learn to trust the process Tell me yes or tell me no, just don’t tell me to wait
But You see more than I can see You’ve got good plans for me So I’m surrendering
Take me down the long way If that’s where I’m meant to be Take me down the back roads God, You know what’s best for me You’re with me every moment Even the ones I wouldn’t choose So take me down the long way If the long way leads to You
I have seen Your faithfulness in every mile so far All that I have needed You’ve provided from the start Your voice is always gentle and Your love is evergreen Leading me to a kindness that I never would have seen
You see more than I can see You’ve got good plans for me They’re better than I dreamed I’m Yours, and I believe
Closing Thoughts
In Natalie’s vocals, I hear a sincere yearning for the Lord and a thankfulness in her heart for God's mercy and grace.
“The Long Way” is a reminder that we can overcome hardships and that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. God’s love is never-ending, and He is our refuge and strength. God’s resurrection power is available to those who believe in Him, the same power that defeated death and raised Jesus from the grave.
This song gives me more conviction not to feel worthless or afraid. In many areas of our lives, we spend a lot of valuable time worrying. We need to let our worries go and allow the Lord to be our redeemer.
The Bible says to trust what God says about us, no matter how we feel about ourselves. In many areas of our lives, have joy and worship loudly about the love of God in your life. His grace takes away anxiety, guilt, and shame. Know that being His is enough.
Lay your doubts and struggles at the feet of Jesus, and He'll take them from you and release you from those burdens. God wants to hear from you. As Christians, we're called to believe in the freedom we have in the cross of Jesus. We're free from our addictions, insecurities, and perfectionism.
Jesus came to die for us so we can all truly live in Him. While we can't see everything in our fallen world through life's mirror, which dimly obscures grace and truth, there's nothing we can do except trust in His son, Jesus. His ways are higher than our ways.
God wants us to boldly approach the throne of mercy and grace to receive what we need. He is a perfect and holy God. Although He has wrath, His kindness leads us to repentance. He desires for us to know Him. We can confess during the song that this is who I was, who I am, and who I will be, past, present, and future. His mercies are new every morning.
Jesus is ever true to His Word. What He spoke on earth, He affirms in heaven. His Word is a message of grace.
If you’re struggling day to day, please know these life-giving words with certainty: “Take me down the long way/If that’s where I’m meant to be/Take me down the back roads God, You know what’s best for me/You’re with me every moment/Even the ones I wouldn’t choose/So take me down the long way/If the long way leads to You.” Amen to that.
