The Holy Spirit has often been overlooked: most people focus on the Father and the Son. He has often been resisted in fear of what he does (but, the Holy Spirit is gentle). John 14:26 describes the Holy Spirit as, "the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."

The Book of John describes the promise of the Holy Spirit. And how he came to be within us when Jesus descended to heaven. The book also describes what the spirit does when he's with us.

John 16:5-8: “I am going to Him who sent Me; yet none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ Instead, your hearts are filled with sorrow because I have told you these things. But I tell you the truth, it is for your benefit that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment.” That means, when you feel the nudge of conviction because of sin, that's the Holy Spirit. Also, when non-Christians become aware of their sins and actions, thus coming to God, that’s the Holy Spirit.

When you feel supernatural comfort—God’s presence—in times of trial, that’s the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:26 (MSG) says, "
Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God's Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don't know how or what to pray, it doesn't matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans."

Many songwriters and singers write songs about the Holy Spirit. The Spirit has comforted those going through tough times. The Spirit has brought those to Christ through convictions of sins. All this inspiration wrote in music. After diving into these songs, I have a new appreciation for the majesty of God and how simply incredible the Holy Spirit is. I encourage you to stream the following songs, compile them into a new or existing playlist, and prepare yourself to hear from the Lord.

Patrick Mayberry "Holy Spirit Come"

One of the more celebratory tracks on this list, new artist Patrick Mayberry will put a smile on your face as he welcomes the Holy Spirit into the room setting the stage for expectation, miraculous change, and undeniable presence.

"Holy Spirit Come/Like a flood, like a fire/Holy Spirit fall, in this place, fill our hearts/Holy Spirit come"

Francesca Battistelli "Holy Spirit"

Several artists have recorded their own rendition of "Holy Spirit." I like Francesca's version because of its simplicity. Her voice encourages the listener to focus on the song's strong words. The lyrics are a cry for the Holy Spirit to come and inhabit our praise. This message is so special because it's something we can only understand if we truly know the Holy Spirit.

"Holy Spirit, You are welcome here/Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere/Your glory, God, is what our hearts long for/To be overcome by Your presence, Lord"

Maverick City Music and Upperroom "Rest on Us"

Worship band Maverick City Music recently experienced a popularity boost in Christian music—and for good reason. Their powerful lyrics and beautiful choir create strong anthems that are practically guaranteed to get stuck in your head. Having these words on repeat is great for the brain: they remind me over and over again of God's love.

The bridge emphasizes our deep longing for the Holy Spirit, while the chorus turns the song into a hand clapper. This song is true godly worship, the simplest yet most profound foundation any song can have.

"Come down/Spirit, when You move You make my heart pound/When You fill the room/You're here and I know You are moving/I'm here and I know You will fill me"

Hillsong Worship "Fresh Wind"

I've had "Fresh Wind" on my playlist for weeks (I truly believe God arranges my music to give me the message I need). At the time, I needed some peace and clarity (the music I was listening to wasn't delivering it). Then, autoplay—working alongside Jesus—brought this song into my life. By the song's bridge, I was on my knees. Give it a listen and get ready for a wave of peace to wash over you—one of the most beautiful things a song can ever do.

"Let all the redeemed (prophesy)/Prophesy and sing/We can hear the wind/Blowing, blowing (pour Your Spirit out), blowing"

Elevation Worship "Here as in Heaven"

Sometimes Earth feels so far away from heaven, it's discouraging. But, true to their name, the worship band Elevation Worship has a way of turning bad situations into beauty with their music. In "Here as in Heaven," they remind us that we can create a place of praise here on Earth, replicating heaven.

Humans have a supernatural longing for something, anything fulfilling. Everywhere you look is a new, temporary method of satisfaction. But none of them ever last. The Holy Spirit is the only thing that will truly satisfy us until we're admitted into eternity. Elevation's singers recognize this and cry out for a fresh fire to keep us going in the way of the Father, a cry echoed by the angels in heaven.

"Spirit of God fall fresh on us/We need Your presence/Your kingdom come, Your will be done/Here as in heaven"

Kari Jobe "Breathe on Us"

I love the metaphor contemporary artist Kari Jobe uses in this song: "Like a rushing wind." It's such a perfect comparison because when the Holy Spirit enters in, it truly can't be stopped. The Spirit brings joy, peace, and love all at once. It makes perfect sense that Christians long for such a breath because of His almighty power.

This chorus may be fast-paced but the message is clear—in one breath, life can change. Impossible dreams are realized and carried out, chains are snapped, and addictions are broken. Nothing more and nothing less than the Holy Spirit can accomplish all of that in the same beautiful moment.

"Breathe on us/
Holy fire, fall/Come and fill this place with Your presence/Like a rushing wind/Send Your spirit here/Breath of heaven, breathe on us"

Kim Walker-Smith "Spirit Break Out"

I completely forgot how much I love this song. It's an older listen. The song starts out with a simple drum beat over the chorus. It highlights the fact that we build up walls, thinking they protect us. In reality, these walls keep us from God's amazing glory. Of course, He can penetrate our walls, but it's up to us, whether or not, we'll let Him in. So, allow Him to break down your walls, so the Holy Spirit can work wonders in your life.

"Spirit break out/Break our walls down/Spirit break out/Heaven come down"

Red Rocks Worship "Things Of Heaven"

Colorado-based Red Rocks Worship just released theirThings Of Heaven EP and the title track is a beautiful ushering in of the mysterious and wonderous Holy Spirit where "even a glimpse is more than enough." The track is full of awe of the power of the Holy Spirit.

"Something is coming/I feel the wind blowing/It's mystery/Things unseen/The tides are now changing/I see the dawn breaking/It's happening/The awakening/So come, Holy Spirit come/And hover over us/Holy Spirit come"
