Have you ever heard Sidewalk Prophets’ smash hit "Prodigal"? This musical masterpiece is everyone’s story in some way. We all want our inheritance and want to spend it on prodigal living. That was my story and finding new life in Jesus has shown me that my heart belongs with God and He is running towards me.
“Prodigal” is an example of the heartfelt, music of reverence style of music from contemporary Christian band, the Sidewalk Prophets. The song comes from the band’s album, Something Different (standout songs “Everything in Awe” and “Impossible” are also worth a listen). Something Different follows the success of Live Like That, which featured “Live Like That,” “Help Me Find It,” and “Keep Making Me.”
Most recently, Sidewalk Prophets have been enjoying the success from their 2020 album, The Things That Got Us Here (the album was one of my top 10 albums of 2020.). Their catchy hit “Smile” from the album is definitely worth a listen).
I had the chance to speak with my friend and brother in Christ, lead singer Dave Frey, about their newest single “Chosen” from the album.

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
Our rhythm guitarist Ben McDonald and I wrote “Chosen” with our good buddy songwriter Seth Mosley and his worship leader friend, Tommy Iceland. During one of our songwriting sessions together, someone said, “the mirror is so unforgiving.” Coming out of that comment, we all thought about how the mirror is scary when you stop and look at yourself.
When you look at yourself too long, Satan can use those unforgiving moments to make you look down on yourself. There were so many times growing up I thought negatively of myself in school. Now, as a father, in dealing with my anxieties and insecurities, when I think about my failures, those doubts and negative voices come back to me.
When I hear those negative voices, I feel like I’m alone. With all those thoughts, I asked myself, have I ever wondered at my heart’s core exactly who I am? So, what seemed like a throwaway comment became the important start of writing this song.
1 Peter 2:9 lays it all out there, “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.”
The imagery of being “God’s special possession” and how God holds onto us like Linus held his safety blanket as a Charlie Brown Peanuts’ character is how I thought about that Bible verse when writing this song.
I read 1 Peter 2:9 a lot and the idea that we are God’s special possession is a picture of how God wants to go get us and hold onto us. That idea brought me a peace in thinking about how we are chosen by God each day.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
1 Peter 2:9 (NKJV): "But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light."
1 Peter 2:9-10 (MSG): “But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God’s instruments to do his work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference he made for you—from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.”

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV): "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold all things have become new."
Jeremiah 29:11-13 (NIV): "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart."

Romans 12:2 (VOICE): "Do not allow this world to mold you in its own image. Instead, be transformed from the inside out by renewing your mind. As a result, you will be able to discern what God wills and whatever God finds good, pleasing, and complete."

1 Corinthians 1:27 (VOICE): "But celebrate this: God selected the world's foolish to bring shame upon those who think they are wise; likewise, He selected the world's weak to bring disgrace upon those who think they are strong."

2 Corinthians 12:9 (NKJV): "And He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me."

Ephesians 2:10 (NLT): "For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago."

Psalm 139:13-14 (NKJV): "For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well."

1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV): "But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."
What is the takeaway message?
More than anything, since quarantine started, loneliness has been a real challenge for people. Looking out the window and being by yourself isn’t God’s plan for us. Being with Him and others is part of His plan. So, know that He has a plan for you—for each of us.
So, whatever darkness you’re walking through today, whatever the world is trying to define you as, know that God is the one that is the author and the perfecter of your faith. Jesus sees you today and whatever you’re walking through. He sees you, and says, “I love you.” He chooses you. Believe it.
We can remember that “Chosen” is proclaiming that we belong to God and that we are not alone. We are a work in progress. God wants the best for us and wants us to know we belong to Him. Know that you are chosen by God.
The Lord wants us to tell the world about Him. So, let others know God by letting your souls shine for Christ.
What do you see when
You look in the mirror
A loser, a failure
Does every scar determine
Who you are
Maybe don't look
Just turn away
If every day is like yesterday
Winds are gonna change

What do you hear when
You're all alone
In your head a dead end
Stranded at sea
On a stepping stone
There's a cloud inside you
It's welling up
Your eyes are holding back a flood
It's safe to come undone

You're not worthless
You're precious
You're not left out
You're wanted
You're not invisible
With your shining soul
Love has spoken
You are chosen

You sat on the side and
You tried to hide it
In silence and quiet
But deep in your heart
There's a burning fire
Whoever told you that
You're not strong
Today's the day you're
Gonna prove them wrong
It's in your victory song

You're not worthless
You're precious
You're not left out
You're wanted
You're not invisible
With your shining soul
Love has spoken
You are chosen

Your fear is courageous and
Your weakness is strong
Hold onto faith and
You'll more than overcome
This is your identity
Your call to be
You're royalty
You're chosen
You are chosen

Your fear is courageous and
Your weakness is strong
Hold onto faith and
You'll more than overcome
This is who you're made to be
Come and see your destiny
You're chosen
You are chosen

You're not worthless
You're precious
You're not lest out
You're wanted
You're not invisible
With your shining soul
Love has spoken
You are chosen

Closing Thoughts
“Chosen” celebrates the promise of 1 Peter 2:9 (NKJV): "You may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light." God doesn't promise to spare us from pain, but He does promise that He’ll walk us through it. So, we must trust and wait on Him.
Wait for God to orchestrate the plans for your life. You have nothing to bring to God. Maybe you expect something in return, instead of recognizing that nothing compares to the greatness of knowing Jesus. Faith is when we are empty of ourselves and filled with Him and His Holy Spirit.
The song’s message is simple, “Know that we don't have to be perfect; God made us the way we are for a reason. We're beautiful and we're worth it. We have something to say.”
We're fearfully and wonderfully made. Don't let the world tell you who you are. It doesn't matter what you look like outside if you have Jesus on the inside. That's where we can find our true identities—in Him.
For me, the most encouraging part of this song is the message that I don't have to be perfect, but that God knows me and loves me just as I am. That is cause for celebration as we all have freedom to be ourselves and know that He has great plans for us as His children.
A blessing I've received from this song is listening to my daughters sing these words with all their hearts. These are the thoughts I want them to know to point them to the unconditional love of their Heavenly Father. He is singing these words over all of us.
“Chosen” is a great example of a biblical truth that all listeners can resonate with. Christians are brand-new people on the inside. The Holy Spirit gives us new life, and we don't have to live anymore with our guilt, fears, perfectionism or worries.
We are called as Christians to believe in the freedom that we have in the cross of Jesus. This song is a personal testimony to the power of walking out of the darkness and into God's marvelous light.
This song celebrates the freedom we are promised in God's Holy Word: "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." The song challenges me to think about what I'm allowing to rule in my heart, instead of giving myself completely to God.
Jesus died on the cross to set us free from the battle of our minds, from sin and death. And, He wants us to have abundant life in Him. What a wonderful, encouraging truth.
God knows us intimately. And, because of what Jesus did on the cross, He sees us as holy, righteous, redeemed, chosen, fully known, and forgiven no matter what you've done.
If you've put all your hope and trust in Jesus, there's nothing that can separate you from His love. This is one of my favorite songs of the past year. Sing this song to God with all of your heart and know that: “You're not worthless, you're precious/You're not left out, you're wanted/You're not invisible with your shining soul/Love has spoken, you are chosen.” Amen to that.
