Passionate about the local church and authentic worship, Kari Jobe believes it's God's desire for everyone to know Him and to experience His love and power. In such a time as this, she believes the local church is the greatest force on the planet. And, that Jesus is the hope of humanity.

"Recording this album live
without an audiencewas something I wrestled with. But, I really felt God say to keep moving forward," shares Kari Jobe in a press release. "I felt like if I waited, I would be disobeying the Lord. I'm trusting that these songs are meant to release hope right now in this uncertain season. When I was working on this new album, I wanted to think about the church; little did I know that I would have to have the 'church' in my heart when I recorded a live album as well."

"We need Jesus, we need His presence," Jobe explains. "Thankfully, His presence goes with us wherever we go. We can access Him anywhere we are. My heart is that people would experience that in every moment of this album. That they would be drawn to the heart of the Father who loves them."

Our worship should be Christ-centered, and the songs on The Blessing are all about Jesus. Kari’s songs proclaim Jesus' lordship and matchlessness over the earth. The new album includes the standout songs, “First Love,” “The Blessing,” and “Your Nature.”

Many of Jobe’s songs are about dwelling on our Eternal One, Jesus. And, how one day all things will be made new. There will be no more death. No more sorrow. No more crying. I think the Church could benefit from more proclamations of the excitement of everlasting life in heaven. I had the chance to speak with Kari about her song, “Let the Light In.”

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

I was so excited to record "Let The Light In." I remember the day I was driving to North Carolina to do pre-production for the album. I felt like there was just one more song I wanted to write for it. I realized everything I wanted to say for the album was also found in the lyrics that Cody Carnes, my husband, had written for this song.

I decided it would be good to record a faster version sung in a key for women to sing. I remember saying to Cody that I didn’t want people to move on from the song's message. The enemy is always fighting to silence our worship, steal from our peace, and make us question our faith. This song is a reminder of what we're believing, who we're listening to, and to let the light and life of God in and shine. I love the hope and the joy that this song brings.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Psalm 24:7-9 (NIV): “Lift up your heads, you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.”

Ephesians 5:14 (NIV): “This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

Romans 8:11 (VOICE): "If the Spirit of the One who resurrected Jesus from the dead lives inside of you, then you can be sure that He who raised Him will cast the light of life into your mortal bodies through the life-giving power of the Spirit residing in you."

1 Peter 5:6-7 (NIV): “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”

Psalm 40:17 (VOICE): "Meanwhile, I am empty and need so much, but I know the Lord is thinking of me. You are my help; only You can save me, my True God. Please hurry."

What is the takeaway message?

I love that "Let The Light In" has strong scriptural references. We always gravitate to trying to write very biblically-sound truths in our worship songs. I love the life that happens when we declare the Word of God. We change the narrative of what’s in our minds.

There are so many moments as I look back on different songs about things I’ve had to go after in my own life, for my kids, in the Spirit, and with scripture. “Your Nature” and “The Blessing” are examples. In the past few years, I was dealing with extreme fear, and, honestly, a spirit of torment. It was an intense season for me.

I was fed up with feeling scared that something was going to happen and with all these what-ifs the enemy was trying to bring. I got really fervent and said, “That’s enough. I’m not going to live my life like this.” I began to cry out to the Lord to break off the spirit of fear.

The Lord used the phrase, “My nature is good” in a deep powerful prayer time I had with a friend. He set me free from that intense fear with that phrase. He also helped me to not be so afraid that I would mess up or something bad would happen. As a parent, I do have a level of fear of the unknown.

I had to resolve to trust God and not myself. There’s a lot of that locked up in some of these songs. There are a lot of fervent prayers and resolving things in my own heart with God, putting them into songs.

Lyrics

It's time for
The sleeper to wake

It’s time for
The old winds to change
I hear the Spirit
Say it’s time

It’s time for
The dead man to rise
It’s time for
The Great Light to shine
I hear the Spirit
Say it’s time

Fling wide you heavenly gates
Let the King of glory in
Let the King of glory in
Come ride in
On Your people’s praise
Let the King of glory in
Let the King of glory in

It’s time for
The sleeper to wake
It’s time for
The old winds to change
I hear the Spirit
Say it’s time

It’s time for
The dead man to rise
It’s time for
The Great Light to shine
I hear the Spirit
Say it’s time

Fling wide you heavenly gates
Let the King of glory in
Let the King of glory in
Come ride in
On Your people’s praise
Let the King of glory in
Let the King of glory in

Fling wide you heavenly gates
Let the King of glory in
Let the King of glory in

Closing Thoughts

"Let The Light In" addresses the concept of keeping our eyes open, and to remember our calling. Ephesians 5:14 says it best: "wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." The type of faith we're called to have is described as the faith of a mustard seed. We're called to walk by faith, and not by sight. That's the type of resolution we're called to have.

We serve a God who has infinitely more for us than we can think or imagine. Once the light of the Holy Spirit is in you, you can show it to others as you live your daily life, including outside of a worship context.

Are you allowing the Holy Spirit to work in your life? Are you spending time listening to Him? He'll make you free. God wants to hear from you. With everything going on in our world, we need the encouragement that God is with us and we're not alone.

There is no day, no hour of the day, in which our Lord Jesus is not present. This song is a game-changer when you sing it in spirit and in truth to the Lord. Ask to be in His presence and to hear His voice. Take time to get to know Him. To know that He is God.

This song reminds me to have resolve as a follower of Jesus, to keep my eyes wide open and find ways to serve Him for my good and His glory. My resolution is to pray more fervent prayers, to have more faith and to have joy to the fullest.

We can't earn grace, and we can't do anything to gain life other than accepting Jesus. What if we lived as though we believed the sincere words of this song? You'll be raising your heart and hands in worship along with this great new song.

Jesus loves us so much that He came down and took our punishment so that we can be with Him forever. We can call out our King of glory and He will keep us safe. This is a truth for believers to cling to.

We're not supposed to just hope Jesus saving us is true, or turn to the Lord as a last resort. But, instead, be washed by the truth of the Word of God. God uses the Bible as a daily reminder for us to not be afraid. So, try to r
ead it every day. Build your life on scripture.

This song is an offer of true release that we can sing with all our hearts to God: “It’s time for the sleeper to wake/It’s time for the old winds to change/I hear the Spirit say it’s time.” What a wonderful, encouraging truth. Amen to that.
