The acclaimed 19-year old vocalist Koryn Hawthorne, known as a top 4 finalist on The Voice, recently released her first EP. The self-titled EP from the Louisiana native released on August 4, preceded by the rising single "Won't He Do It."
"This particular song is so catchy and fun and I can't wait to perform it," Koryn Hawthorne has said about the energetic track (originally written by Makeba Riddick-Woods). "I don't put myself in a box. The sound is universal, even if it's considered 'gospel.' This music can touch anyone and everyone, no matter their walk of life." It's exactly that universal appeal that captured hearts across the country through The Voice. I had the chance to speak with Koryn about "Won't He Do It."
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
First of all, I recorded the song for the soundtrack of Greenleaf. I got a call and they said they liked my music, and they wanted me to be part of the soundtrack. I didn't know whether they wanted me to sing one of my songs. I flew to Atlanta, and in the studio they played me the song "Won't He Do It," which was written my Makeba. She's amazing, and she's won Grammy awards. When I heard the song, I immediately liked it. It is super youthful. I went into the studio and laid it down, and it was cool how the song transformed from my putting my vocals to it.
Personally, what the song means to me: with my life ever since I was a kid, I've always known that God has a purpose for me life. I always knew that music was what I was supposed to do, but I've also had letdowns where I've questioned it. No matter what, God always came in and let me know that this was the path I was supposed to be on. Even through times when I felt it wasn't going to work out, God always comes through.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Jeremiah 29:11 (The Voice): "For I know the plans I have for you," says the Eternal, "plans for peace, not evil, to give you a future and hope--never forget that."
Romans 8:28 (The Voice): "We are confident that God is able to orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan."
Isaiah 43:19 (NIV): "See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland."
John 14:6 (NIV): Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."
1 Corinthians 10:13 (NLV): "You have never been tempted to sin in any different way than other people. God is faithful. He will not allow you to be tempted more than you can take. But when you are tempted, He will make a way for you to keep from falling into sin."
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (VOICE): "For I passed down to you the crux of it all which I had also received from others, that the Anointed One, the Liberating King, died for our sins and was buried and raised from the dead on the third day. All this happened to fulfill the Scriptures; it was the perfect climax to God's covenant story."
What is the takeaway message?
Whether it's a confirmation or through blessings He gives, He never lets me down. That's what this song is about. I know I can make it through anything. I know that God is always on my side, and He will make a way.
My whole life has been about the purpose that God has for me, which is why Jeremiah 29:11 is my life verse and why that Scripture connects with me. Sometimes we have our doubts, but we are on the right path. I know other kids my age aren't focused on what God has planned for them. They are going to school and getting their education and trying to reach goals. Spiritually, our goals are based on asking ourselves "what does God want me to do?" Keep the faith in knowing that God cares about you so much that He has specific plans for you and your life. That's what keeps pushing me on.
I could have done secular music, but I know that God has a plan through this, and He will touch people's lives. He'll come through, and it's a constant reminder in this song. I want to make music for my generation. I was reading a book about how Jesus spoke in parables and gave us the eyes and ears to understand what He was saying. In my music, I am talking about things going on, and they can look forward to a message in everything. God wants to raise people up and speak to my generation and rattle their spirits. God always comes through. I don't just want to make music for the church, but also to reach mainstream listeners as well. I'm excited!
Ain't nobody stopping my shine
They try to break me try to take me out
But I got Jesus on my side
Felt so bad I thought I would die
But ain't no power stronger than the one that came and laid down His life
And I got mountains to climb
But the enemy can't stop me 'cause there's a calling on my life
So when I'm crying don't last too long
'Cause He gonna step in and make it alright
Won't He do it, He said He would
Fight your battles for ya, they gone wonder how you sleep at night
Won't He do like yes He will
Anybody tell you something different you know that's a lie
You gone look back and be so amazed
How it turned out, it's only His grace
Won't He do it, He said He would
So I trust Him at all times
I'm about to lose it again
I'm bout to let 'em know where I'm from
Don't take me there again
I just call on Jesus my friend
Get me back in line one more time
Cause He's always listening
Ain't nobody perfect
Everybodys hurtin
Need your whisper Lord save me from my weaknesses
Cause you're always on time
Come and get your breakthrough cause I'm gone get mine
Won't He do it, He said he would
Fight your battles for ya, they gonna wonder how you sleep at night
Won't He do like yes He will
Anybody tell you something different you know that's a lie
You gonna look back and be so amazed
How it turned out, it's only His grace
Won't He do it, He said He would
So I trust Him at all times
You see what the enemy planned for my downfall
Turned out to be the greatest victory of my life
Cause when it comes at you fast and hard
There's only one that can come and make it right
So ain't no need for stressing and cryin'
Cause He gone show up just like He did the last time
And the last time, and the last time I know I know I know
Won't He do it
Won't He do it, He said He would
Fight your battles for ya, they gonna wonder how you sleep at night
Won't He do like yes He will
Anybody tell you something different you know that's a lie
You gonna look back and be so amazed
How it turned out, it's only His grace
Won't He do it, He said He would
So I trust Him at all times
Won't He do it, He said He would (so I trust Him at all times)
Won't He do it, like Yes He will (so I trust Him at all times)
Won't He do it, I know He will (so I trust Him at all times)
Won't He do it, He said He will (so I trust Him at all times)
Here's what Charles Spurgeon says about Romans 8:28 in his Morning and Evening Devotional on August 5th: "Upon some points a believer is absolutely sure. He knows too that God is always wise, and knowing this, he is confident that there can be no accidents, no mistakes; that nothing can occur which ought not to arise. He can say, 'If I should lose all I have, it is better that I should lose than have, if God so wills: the worst calamity is the wisest and the kindest thing that could befall to me if God ordains it.' We know that all things work together for good to them that love God. The Christian does not merely hold this as a theory, but he knows it as a matter of fact."
Once you adopt the words of this song into your heart, then you will remember the Truth that Jesus has always been, He is today and He always will be the One who makes a way for us, even when it seems impossible. That's something to remember and rest upon. As followers of Jesus, we know that we can trust God's Word. We are all a work in progress. Have faith and let God "work all things together for good." Spend time with God, and let Him redeem and restore you.
God wants us to know that He's faithful to complete what's He's started in all of us who've put all of our hope and trust in Jesus for our salvation. God is bigger than any calamity that we experience in this world. His love never fails! God doesn't make bad things happen to us. He came to give us life and invite us to live with Him eternally by trusting in Jesus alone for our salvation. God is bigger than any tragedy we may have experienced in this world. In any situation, God will make a way for His children.
As this song proclaims, "I've got Jesus on my side." We all certainly beat ourselves up and forget that Truth. This song expresses my own spiritual feelings and the prayerful yearnings of my heart. Jesus is the blessed Hope that we have. With many areas in our lives, we also spend a lot of time worrying. We need to let that go and allow the Lord to be our Redeemer. Seize the day, live for Jesus and know that for the believer the answer to "won't He do it?" is "yes, He will." Sing out loudly, "Won't He do it? He said He will, so I trust Him at all times." Amen to that!
