At only 19 years old, Koryn Hawthorne captivated audiences across America through NBC's The Voice. Her soulful voice catapulted her to a position as a top 4 finalist on season 8 of the show under the leadership of coach Pharrell Williams, who often sang the praises of Koryn's skillful vocal chops, positive attitude and determination. Now taking all of those elements and incorporating what she learned from her time on the show, Koryn is ready to showcase her style with her debut self-titled EP.
"I don't put myself in a box. The sound is universal, even if it's considered 'gospel.' This music can touch anyone and everyone, no matter their walk of life," Hawthorne says of the four songs that will introduce her to the world post-Voice.
Bursting right out of the gate with what I imagine will become her signature soul sound, "Reasons (feat. J Monty)" brings the EP to life within seconds of pressing play. Quickly finding the Gospel edge Koryn mentioned, "Speak The Name" is a slower track that will no doubt capture the attention of listeners with its reverent atmosphere and bold lyrics carried by hauntingly powerful vocals. "Strongholds are broken / I've been made free / I am forgiven / Fear has to leave / Your name is healing / Your name is power / Your name is holy, my strong, strong tower," the climactic bridge declares.
Wasting no time before bringing the tempo back up, pop/rock-tinted "Warriors" displays Koryn's impressive vocal range and offers some sonic diversity in the album. Lead single "Won't He Do It" closes the EP with catchy beats and lyrics of confidence in Christ's faithfulness.
One listen to this EP and it becomes obvious why Koryn was so successful on The Voice. Her soulful sound, carefully-honed talent, poppy creativity and strong faith shines through in every track on this EP, hopefully giving fans a good taste of what's to come from the powerhouse in the future.
The Bottom Line: With traces of worship, pop and gospel mixed together in a well-produced blend, Koryn Hawthorne will be a treat for fans across multiple genres.
