The Return of Hawk Nelson| Posted September 21, 2009
Artist pick of the week-Returning to the sounds of their first CD's comes an album not to be missed. The rockers Hawk Nelson return with a CD that brings a little something for everyone. "Meaning of Life" is a deep song with a beautiful orchestral piece and moving lyrics. Starting off the CD on a high note is the rocking title track "Live Life Loud". "Alive" brings across an industrial sound with intense lyrics and a rythm that makes you want to get up and move. The random side of Hawk Nelson comes back in the islandish sound of “Ode to Lord Stanley”, blending a ukelele and great vocals with some thoughtful lyrics gives you a break to think about modern media. The song “Shaken” has music that feels a lot like the 90's but with lyrics that take aim to your heart. One of the most interesting points of the CD is the Celtic rendition of "Tis So Sweet" an absolutely gorgeous version. And closing out the CD is the acoustic "The Final Toast", with a great violin peace and passionate lyrics, a great way to bring the CD around to the end. In the end it is a great album with some fun songs and some deep songs, even bringing out a time to worship, and that is why it is my pick of the week. -Aaron Dowen

I really like this album. Its good old hawk nelson at their best!! Great lyrics and really catchy hooks! The album starts off with a bang with the title track "Live Life Loud" It is a song that I wont be able to get out of my head which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Hawk Nelson always seems to have a knack to mix really high energized songs with inspirational ballads with excellent lyrics that end up pulling at your heart strings such as The Final Toast. The bands perfect ending to another awesome album. If you're not a Hawk Nelson fan then this is a good album to get yourself acquainted with their style of music.

The album starts out with the cheerleading chants of the title track, entering into a fun and message-full song of punk-pop pleasure, clearly stating to all listener’s that Hawk Nelson are staying the same for their fourth album in a row. Hawk has never been the kind of band to change or even mature their sound. They just slightly refine their sound of adjust how they mix their formula of CCM, punk, pop, and alternative rock. Plenty of the songs are short-and-sweet morsels of Christian punk, but Hawk have been as well known for their ballads ever since 2006's great hit “Everything You Ever Wanted.” The band continues to write with longtime collaborator Trevor McNevan, but this time around Hawk even has a song with TobyMac. The vocals are fine (hitting a high in rambunctious “Alive” and the gorgeous “Shaken), but the band actually sounds unique when they give the music a moment in the spotlight as well, like in the stellar intro and bridge of “Meaning of Life.” The songwriting may be simple, but Hawk Nelson is great at what they do.
