Newsboys' "In The Hands of God" | Posted May 13, 2009
So I'm a long time fan of the Newsboys, I grew up listening to them. Finally some new material! Goodness! I hate it when bands wait two and half to three years to give their fans something new. "Go" was great but come on guys, we need some material to keep us happy. It's also a shame that Peter Furler (the front man and songwriter) left the band. Peter, in my opinion was a pretty strong backbone. Anyways, enough of crying over the loss.

The new album "In The Hands of God" brings back Jody Davis (guitarist from 1993-2003) and has that classic Newsboys sound along with some new things musically. I really enjoy the music part this time around. It seems they've been holding back on the music mix the last couple full length, non-worship albums. Thrive and Go just lack the talent that I know the band has. I've seen them live, it has been a while though. I don't think I've seen them in concert for years. However, I know that they're talented musicians with a heart for the Lord and a mission to reach people who don't know Christ. This album is definitely a favorite for 2009. Though there are some songs that I'm not the biggest fan of, it's definitely a step up, thanks Newsboys for keeping up the hard work!

Favorite Tracks- "The Way We Roll" , "No Grave" , "In the Hands of God" , "My Friend Jesus" , "Lead Me to the Cross" , and "Dance"

don't get me wrong, the album is great, but those are my favorites.

"In The Hands of God" is in stores and online now! Go pick up a copy!

AWESOME | Posted May 09, 2009
I thought after "Thrive" it couldn't get much better. Was please with the next two, but they didn't "rock" like "Thrive" did. THEN along came the "GO" disk and I fell in love all over again. How can it get any better than this? WELL, it does! "IN THE HANDS OF GOD" in INCREDIBLE and I didn't find a song on it that I didnt absolutely LOVE! It's worth every penny and more :D

A Good CD, But Not Great | Posted May 09, 2009
The Newsboys are releasing In The Hands Of God. Thankfully, Furler is still featured on vocals. The album begins with the energetic opener "The Way We Roll." Using imagery ranging from the band's humble beginnings to their superstar status today and crediting the Lord for their success, this one ends up becoming a contemplative song. Following "The Way We Roll" is "No Grave." This song really shows the serious side of the Newsboys, and it's possibly the best track on the record. A mature and welcomed addition to the Newsboys' list of hits.

In these last few years, it's become a trademark of the Newsboys to include at least a couple of worship songs on every release, and In the Hands Of God is no exception. "Glorious" is a great original, acknowledging the Lord's greatness in light of our personal failures. The title track is in the same vein, which discusses how we can rely on God in times of trouble. "Lead Me to the Cross" is the one cover song on the record, originally done by Hillsong United.

Speaking of disappointing song choices, "This Is Your Life" and "My Friend Jesus" prove to be the most surprisingly lacking tracks on the record. Just like Switchfoot's song of the same name, "This Is Your Life" urges listeners to "treat yourself and others right" and to "do what you know you should." While these lyrics ring true, I can't help but be slightly unimpressed with the lack of lyrical sophistication on this track that the Newsboys are known for. "My Friend Jesus" is just plain odd, (anyone who has heard "Shine" knows exactly what I mean). It follows the tale of a disgruntled consumer calling technical support only to fly into a rage when he's put on hold multiple times. It's a very different track compared to the rest of the record, and though it may have been successful in being different, it wasn't necessarily different in a good way.

The album closes with "Dance," a trance-influenced electronic track, and finally "RSL 1984." This album seems to begin and end on the contemplative side, with both tracks relating the band's past and journey together with a thankful note. As the fourteenth album from the band, it's an appropriate start and finish to the album.

The Last of Peter | Posted May 06, 2009
I have been a fan of Newsboys ever since I began listening to Christian music a couple of years ago, and I am upset that I never got the chance to see them in concert now that Peter has left the band. Not to dis Michael Tait, but Newsboys is never going to be the same. That said, I have to say that In the Hands of God is a great finish for Peter. However, this album is a mix of duds and studs; the studs being "No Grave," "Glorious," and "In the Hands of God." The songs are up and down through out this album and make you think that the tracks should have been arranged differently. Songs like "The Way We Roll," and "This is Your Life" should have been placed later in the album. "Lead me to Cross" is one of the most popular songs to redo as of late, and the string arrangement on Newsboys' take makes it a strong rendition. And "Dance" will make you dance, or rather, bob your head but again is misplaced on the album. I agree with christianmusicreview's review when they said that Newsboys set the bar high on their album Go. This doesn't come close, but is still a great album. Newsboy fans will not be disappointed.

"In The Hands Of God" is a nice enough send off.... | Posted May 06, 2009
"In the Hands of God", the fourteenth album from gold selling artists "newsboys" is a nice enough CD to send off current front man Peter Furler. The high profile exchange of power from Furler to former DC Talk member Mike Tait has been the buzz of the music community for a good month now. Musically the CD is everything we all know and love about the newsboys; catchy Dance Pop/Rock tunes, and then some; the edgy and triumphant "No Grave" comes to mind. However lyrically, the album falls a little short. But lets not dwell on the little negative when there is rejoicing to be had! The return of guitarist Jody Davis is welcome and the addition of Superchick producer Max Hsu was a stroke of genius. Some of the album is auto-biographical to the newsboys journey and legacy, where other parts are sheer newsboys nostalgia. It took me a few listens to enjoy the album for what it really is and I truly appreciate it! So while it may not grab you on your firt go, it will eventually, so dont give up.

In The Hands of God is sure to be a must have this summer, and with instant classics like "No Grave", the albums namesake, and the Hillsong United cover "Lead Me To The Cross", its sure to be a Single machine. Pick it up at your local Christian Bookstore, if for no other reason than to own a piece of newsboys history.
