My Paper Heart [edit]
by Francesca Battistelli | Genre: AC/Inspo | Release Date: July 22, 2008

Francesca Battistelli is no stranger to the stage. Having been raised by parents immersed in the arts and Broadway, she developed a love of music, theater, and performance at a young age. But instead of using these talents for applause and accolades, Francesca prefers to point people much beyond herself - towards hope. Her soulful piano-pop sound resembles a blend of her music interests- jazz, rock, gospel and R&B woven beautifully together with themes of trust and risk taking. Includes the smash single "I'm Letting Go" and the #1 hit "Free to Be Me".

I had never heard of Fancesca until her latest album was previewed here on NRT. I am so glad it did though. Her lyrics are true, and stiring. And as for the music, I can honestly say, I can't wait for the sheet music to come out so that I can learn to play the music myself.

Two of my favorites are "behind the Scenes", and "Free to be Me", but truely the whole CD gave me no reason to scip a song.

Fresh sound waves! | Posted August 17, 2008
This cd is amazing all around! Franny is my friend and I am not biased at all. This cd is one of those cd's that one can say has potential for every song to be a hit on the radio. Her sound is crisp, clear, and entertaining. You will love her!

Breath of Fresh Air! Finally! | Posted July 26, 2008
The first time I heard this cd by Francesca was when NRT had the album preview up. I am usually very skeptical when it comes to new female vocals mostly because a lot of it is cloned from the the early greats like Rachel Lampa and Staci Orrico. But I immediately fell in love with her sound. She has a broad vocal range and great original lyrics. You can really tell that she puts her heart into singing those songs and you can almost tell where they're coming from in a period of her life. It's a definite must buy.

Like Sunlight Burning To Midnight, Making My Life Something So Beautiful, Beautiful | Posted July 16, 2008
OK, so I was assigned this album to review at JFH, so I've had it for about 3 1/2 weeks now. My personal favorites would be Free To Be Me, My Paper Heart, & Beautiful Beautiful. Here's the review I wrote for it:

20-year-old Francesca Battistelli is the newest addition to Fervent Records’s diverse roster of artists. With an evident passion for songwriting, “My Paper Heart” really shows the feelings and emotions of Miss Battistelli. The lyrics conveyed on the album avoid the typical “Christian clichés” that have marred so many recent CCM albums. Her piano-pop sound could be compared to the likes of Nichole Nordeman or Sara Groves, but Francesca’s music is significantly more light and upbeat than either. In the secular department, however, Sara Bareilles has a sound very similar to that of Francesca’s. For example, the bouncy, catchy first single, “I’m Letting Go,” has a rhythm pattern almost exactly like Bareilles’s hit, “Love Song.”
The album’s opener, “Free To Be Me,” is an upbeat, “He loves you just the way you are” style song, with a chorus declaring, “I’ve got a couple dents in my fender/Got a couple rips in my jeans…Perfection is my enemy/On my own I’m so clumsy/But on Your shoulders I can see/I’m free to be me…” The funky, organ-driven title track (think NewWorldSon), has a similar message, and serves as a 3-and-a-half minute autobiography for Francesca. Her soothing, raspy vocals get a real chance to shine on ballads like the powerful “Beautiful, Beautiful,” and the heartfelt “Behind The Scenes.” Francesca does black gospel with ease in the jazzy, churchy, “Blue Sky.”
However, towards the middle of the album, some of the songs start to run together, and the distinct sound established in the beginning doesn’t sound so original anymore. For example, “Forever Love,” begins as a soft, piano-laden song, but never gains momentum, and its overly repetitive chorus doesn’t help either.
Francesca Battistelli’s debut is unique with its organic, piano-fused pop sound through the majority. The album’s highlights leave a lasting impression on the listener, but there are some moments where a few songs are only average. Overall, the good outweighs the bad, and Francesca is one who is here to stay. Let’s just hope she has a bit more diversity in her next effort.
