BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#712 - "Who Is Like the Lord" by Christina Reynolds
Christina Reynolds of Onething Live shares her personal testimony and the heart behind this song.

Worship Leader Christina Reynolds and the worship team at the International House of Prayer (IHOP) in Kansas City, Missouri have breathed several new worship anthems into the Church from their annual Onething Live conferences. Songs like "You Won't Relent," "You Satisfy My Soul," "Arms Wide Open," "Lift Up Your Head," "I Feel His Love," "The Love Inside," "The Gift," "So Come" and "Pour My Love on You" consistently bless me as a worshiper.

I was excited to hear Onething Live: Love Makes Us Strong, recorded at Onething 2015. The project features Forerunner Music artists and IHOP-KC worship leaders Misty Edwards, Jaye Thomas, Laura Hackett Park, Jonas Park and Jon Thurlow, and new worship leaders Brenton Dowdy, Lauren Holmes, Christina Reynolds and Chris Tofilon, along with guest worship leader Audrey Assad. The collection includes gorgeous renditions of Audrey's Assad's "I Shall Not Want" by Misty Edwards and Passion's "Even So Come" by Laura Hackett Park.

Love Makes Us Strong is a completely worshipful album in the style of Jesus Culture, Bethel Music, Laura Hackett Park and Misty Edwards' previous offerings of Spirit-led praise directly to our King and Savior Jesus. Every single song could be added to your Sunday morning worship set. The leaders at IHOP-KC all write and sing songs with an amazing passion and with unashamed praise and gratitude to our Savior that is inspiring and emotionally moving. The eternal love of Jesus is beautifully expressed in these compelling songs. These are great songs to pray along with and express your own yearnings for holiness and God's presence. I had the chance to speak with Christina Reynolds about "Who is Like the Lord."

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

The chorus, "Who is like the Lord, His greatness is unsearchable," came out of a worship set in the Prayer Room, reflecting on the fact that there is literally no one like Him. He is above all else, and He is infinite, and we will be searching Him out for all eternity. The song is a high praise, declaring the greatness of who He is.

Isaiah 40 is a great meditation point for this song, just reading about how He sits enthroned above and all else is nothing compared to Him, how mighty He is, and how vast the Spirit of the Lord is. Also, in Psalm 145:3 it says "Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable." We're going to be finding out and discovering and having our minds blown by how great our God is.

Listening to the words of the song, something that makes God so great is how He bows low and He loves us weak human beings. When you see the disparity between us and God you can't help but be overwhelmed and worship Him. He isn't just a great, far off, distant God, but He has lavished His love on us.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Isaiah 40:18 (NKJV): "To whom then will you liken God? Or what likeness will you compare to Him?"

Psalm 145:3 (NKJV): "Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; And His greatness is unsearchable."

Isaiah 40:28-31 (NIV): "Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

Please share your testimony. What is the takeaway message?

I grew up in a Christian home, and my dad is a pastor who moved to California from Taiwan. I grew up in an Asian culture, which has interesting dynamics. Everything I learned about the Lord growing up was "He is God, and we do whatever we can to serve Him." It was void of any relationship other than servitude and works. I grew up rebellious, and I struggled with depression and self-hatred and often found myself escaping life and looking for my identity through music, and eventually through alcohol and drug abuse. I had issues with accepting love. My heart wasn't validated to feel anything. I was doing cocaine and failing all of my courses in college. I was in pain from feeling unloved.

My dad sent me to IHOP in Kansas City to visit their ministry. It was totally the Lord breathing on my heart. After a radical encounter with God, my desire for drugs and alcohol left and I poured myself back into music. I no longer dealt with depression and self-hatred. I credit this to my profound experience with Jesus. It has always been the desire of my heart to know that I was loved. Literally the love of Jesus smacked me, and I felt wave after wave of his love. I didn't know all the right theology, but I knew I wanted to live for Him. I love Jesus and know He loves me. I began my journey as a worship leader in 2006 at IHOP, and I am still presently worship leading there. My desire is to touch other's hearts with my story.

Lyrics:
Thundering majesty, bursting forth in love
Speaking forth life into being, pouring out grace from above
Desiring mercy that never ends, You are good always
We'll sing of Your faithfulness for all of our days

Myriads of angels surround Your throne
All cry glory in your temple and make Your great name known
We stand in awe of who You are, so we lift our gaze
To the One seated on the throne, the Ancient of Days

Who is like the Lord
Who is like the Lord
Who is like the Lord
His greatness is unsearchable

All of the glory and all of the honor, our hearts and our love we give to You
We lift high Your great name and offer up our praise, who can we liken to You
We tremble before You in the greatness of Your love, we tremble before You
You are beautiful, You are beautiful

Having three young daughters, it is exciting to me to hear anointed female worship leaders like Laura Hackett Park, Misty Edwards, and new worship leaders Christina Reynolds and Lauren Holmes from IHOP-KC. In this beautiful song, Christina sings with a passion that is engaging and uplifting, and her lyrics point listeners to Jesus. These women are wonderful role models for my daughters to look up to, serving the Lord with their musical gifts.

The prayerful message of devotion in this song is my heart's cry for my daughters to adopt as well. I want them to connect with Jesus in the same way this song longs for relationship with our Lord and Savior. When we feel like we are on shaky ground and we are dealing with the uncertainty of our situations, the economy and our world, this song allows us to dwell on the unshakable and eternal nature of God. When all else fades away, He will remain. I love how prayers and songs of praise are a communal experience that we can all share. I think the Lord wants us to long for Heaven. When we've been indwelled by The Holy Spirit, we have a personal relationship with the Comforter and a peace that surpasses understanding to know that this fallen world isn't all that we are living for, ultimately.

This song leads me to the Throne Room in worship of Jesus, and in this vertical expression in particular I truly get lost in the Majesty and wonder and beauty of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The musical arrangement is perfect for any style of worship service, and the message is biblical, timeless and contemporary. This song for the Church reminds us that the pain of this world is temporary and to live for Heaven. As Christians-- the bride of Christ-- we'll worship Him forever, and with the Elders and the saints we'll all sing to our Bridegroom "Who is like the Lord, Who is like the Lord, Who is like the Lord, His greatness is unsearchable." Amen to that!
