Ask just about any person you encounter today and they'll tell you that life is just too busy. Between work, family, and just the general hustle and bustle, our lives are filled with distractions that separate us from time with God. Music is most often the conduit that helps people draw closer to their heavenly father, and few artists are more gifted in facilitating that connection than
Jaime Jamgochian.
It's her ability to help others draw closer to God--whether in a Sunday morning worship service or driving alone to work on a Monday--that has made Jaime one of Christian music's most acclaimed new artists. Her Centricity debut,
Reason to Live, spawned the modern classic, "Hear My Worship," which spent nine weeks atop the Inspirational charts.
Jaime's music and effervescent personality have reached thousands of young women as she's appeared on Point of Grace's Girls of Grace conferences. In addition, Jaime has stepped forward and launched her own "Modest is Hottest" conferences for young girls.
Since Jaime has signed with Centricity Records, she's toured relentlessly over the past few years and loves having an opportunity to reach people, especially young girls. Having come to Christ during her college years, Jaime admits she made her share of mistakes before becoming a believer, and those moments have made her better equipped to minister to young girls struggling through some of the same issues.
"When a girl comes to me crying and says ‘If you only knew what I did!' I say, ‘You know what? I think I've probably done that too and there's a second chance.'" Jamie says. "You have to hug her and speak out of real life. I tell them: ‘I've been there, I'm sorry you're there and that's not God's best. So you do need to work on it and change, but there's forgiveness.'"
Jaime's new song, "Everything You Are," is absolutely breathtaking, with the song's constant declaration of God's attributes, worshipful chorus and soaring bridge. Many Christian radio stations are now playing it and churches are starting to incorporate it in their Sunday morning praise and worship sets. I had the great opportunity to interview Jaime about her new song.
Please share the background message behind the song "Everything You Are."
This is a worship song I wrote with a friend and fellow worship leader from my church, Hope Darst. I came to know the Lord and got radically saved when I was 21, not having grown up in a Christian home. This song came out of the first dry season I can remember since I've been a Christian.
About a year ago, I went through some doubts after having many years of thinking everything was so great and all my prayers had been answered and I'm living my dream. I've always had the belief and the theology that God is good and His plans for us are always good. His timing is perfect. Scripture tells us His ways and thoughts are higher than ours. I had no problem reading and believing all of that until I went through this season.
I was going through journals and asking the Lord why certain prayers hadn't been answered that I'd been praying for quite some time. One night, my friend Hope and I had dinner together and I was at her house to co-write a song with her and she asked me if I believed in God's goodness in my life and if I believed that He's always good. I was probably complaining about why some things hadn't happened in my career and the Lord had shown me there was more to come but I'd been in the same place for awhile. I was wondering why God hadn't shown me the one I was going to marry yet, and I'm getting older and want to have children.
She really challenged me as to whether I truly believe that God is good and He has good plans for me. I responded that of course I believe that. That's very biblical--the character and nature of God is good. I do think we go through trials and valleys and seasons and if we didn't have those then we wouldn't appreciate those mountaintop experiences.
Please tell me about the Bible verses you used in writing the song. Any life verse?
The verses are based on Jeremiah 29:11-13: "‘For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.'"
The bridge is based on Romans 8:28: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His purpose."
How have those passages and the message of this song been a part of your life?
This song is my expressing this authentic response in the moment of realizing that I wasn't always believing in God's goodness in my life. I was upset and disappointed. I was praying, "God I believe in Your goodness, but I'm not seeing all of it in my life." In His goodness and mercy, He gently humbled me and showed me that His character is always good, but God was asking me, "Jaime will you trust in Me, and will you trust in My plans for your life?" Not anyone else's life--my life.
God has a specific plan for me and I need to trust Him regardless of any circumstances in my life. For the first time, I had to say yes, I'll walk by faith and I believe that God is good no matter what I'm feeling. That started the chorus "Everything You are is everything I need, Jesus everything You are is good," and it felt like it was on repeat in my mind. I sat down and started singing it with Hope, and she sang the Scripture from Jeremiah 29:11 over me as a friend.
Of course there were a lot of tears happening in that moment. Neither of us planned on recording the song, but two weeks later we were leading worship at our church at a women's conference. I felt the Holy Spirit telling me to sing my new song and I wrote a quick bridge and introduced it to 1,000 women that night. I introduced the song by saying, "Maybe you're having a hard time in your life or your circumstances, but God is good." I've never seen the response that I've seen from this song from any songs I've written. After that first chorus, people were engaged and sang along, arms raised and something was welled up in our church body.
One of the ways I connect the most with the Lord is when I pour my heart out to Him in worship and in song and one morning, I was singing the chorus and praying the words, I decided to put a stake in the ground and say I personally apply my faith and choose to believe this truth that I'm singing. I felt God asking me, "Do you believe?" I responded "I believe, I believe, I believe." My faith grew in that moment.
Lyrics:
You promised a hope and a future
You promised good
And You've given life everlasting
You've spoken truth
Everything You are is everything I need, Jesus
Everything You are is good
Everything You are is everything I need, Jesus
Everything You are is so good
And You offer love and forgiveness
You offer peace, receive His peace
And You've given strength for my weakness
You have rescued me
Everything You are is everything I need, Jesus
Everything You are is good
Everything You are is everything I need, Jesus
Everything You are is so good
You're my rock
My salvation
In You I'm not shaken
You work all things for good
Yes, You do, Lord
There's no shadow of doubt that can silence my shout
For I know that You are good
And everything You are is everything I need
How I need You
Whoa
Everything You are is everything I need Jesus
Everything You are is good
I believe I believe I believe tonight
Everything You are is everything I need Jesus
Everything You are is good
So good
His timing's good
His plans are good
His ways are good
So good, so good
Whoa, He promises to work everything together
For good, for good, for our good
For You are good
Here's what Charles Spurgeon says about Romans 8:28 in his Morning and Evening devotional: "Upon some points a believer is absolutely sure. He knows too that God is always wise, and, knowing this, he is confident that there can be no accidents, no mistakes; that nothing can occur which ought not to arise. He can say, ‘If I should lose all I have, it is better that I should lose than have, if God so wills: the worst calamity is the wisest and the kindest thing that could befall to me if God ordains it We know that all things work together for good to them that love God.' The Christian does not merely hold this as a theory, but he knows it as a matter of fact."
God doesn't make bad things happen to us. He came to give us life and to live with Him eternally by trusting in Jesus alone for our salvation. God is bigger than any calamity that we experience in this world. His love never fails! Thank You Jesus!
Jeremiah 29:13 says, "You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart." Jaime has once again written a song that touches my heart and meets me where I am spiritually like her other hit worship song "Hear My Worship."
My favorite part of this great new song for the Church is when Jaime sincerely sings in the last chorus, "I believe, I believe, I believe, tonight," as though we're eavesdropping on Jaime's prayer. This song is a great way to declare the Truth: "Everything You are is everything I need Jesus, Everything You are is good." Amen to that!
