AN NRT CHRISTMAS EXCLUSIVE
Christian Artists Share Their Favorite Christmas Songs
In our continuing Christmas artist series, over 20 different artists and groups share with us about their favorite Christmas songs and why.

Nothing ushers in the season better than a collection of favorite Christmas tunes. From traditional choruses rooted in religious reflections to joyous and happy songs about Santa and his eight tiny reindeer, to even the newer tracks that have quickly become instant classics, everyone has a favorite song or two that resonates with memories young and old.

Last week, over 20 different Christian artists and groups reflected on their favorite holiday traditions, and this week, they nail down their favorite Christmas songs. We've love to hear yours in the comments below.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas from your friends at NRT!

Chris Tomlin:
My favorite is "O, Holy Night." It’s so powerful to me. I don’t know what it is that resonates so much, but for some reason that song grabs me every time. I really feel the weight of it. I feel the power of that song, the power of that lyric. "O, Come All Ye Faithful" is a close second.

Plumb: "O Holy Night." It tells the story of Christmas more beautifully than any other song I've ever heard.

tobyMac: I love "Angels We Have Heard On High."

Anthem Lights (Caleb Grimm): That's an impossible question! I'm that guy who is blaring Christmas music in October. I'll say "O Holy Night" because it's the most emotional Christmas song for me. It paints a beautiful picture of Christ's birth and the impact that night made on the world. It just takes you to that time and place, both melodically and lyrically.

NewSong (Matt Butler): Easy. Without hesitation I'd say Ray Charles’ "The Spirit of Christmas."  Why?  It's Ray Charles--he's the man!!!  And it's in my favorite Christmas movie of all time, Christmas Vacation. While I'm at it, how about favorite Christmas album? Hard to beat Mariah Carey's. It's a family favorite that we pull out every year on the day after Thanksgiving, and it spins pretty much nonstop until Christmas. I tour a lot during Christmas, so a sentimental favorite on that album for me and my wife is “I Miss You Most at Christmastime.”

Jessa Anderson: I love "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" because it has a comfortable, sentimental feeling to me. There are so many versions recorded and it always just feels like Christmas to me when I hear it. It also reminds me of my great memories with friends and family. Diana Krall's version is probably my favorite!

JJ Heller: "Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel" has always been a favorite of mine. I love the combination of mystery and hope in the melody. The beginning of all the verses are so solemn, but then Rejoice! Emmanuel has come to ransom Israel.

FFH (Jeromy Deibler): My new favorite Christmas song is "Silent Night." It comes alive when Jennifer sings the kids to sleep with it. She sings it all year.

Benjah: "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel." Musically it has a very powerful effect on my emotions and it's focused on Christ as the answer and saviour!

Matt Brouwer: "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" is my favorite Christmas song. Although I love a lot of Christmas tunes for various reasons, this one has it all. It's a very reflective and solemn song and yet there's an unmistakable hope and expectation there as well.  It's an invitation to worship and when I hear it I'm always moved.

No Other Name (Laura): This is an impossible question! I love "Oh Holy Night," "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" and so many more! I think what they all have in common is the expression of utter joy that was brought to the earth upon the birth of the Savior. Singing songs that talk about that in a powerful way gets me every time.

John Schlitt: It would have to be “O Holy Night.” For some reason, I feel it covers the spirit of Christmas. When I sing it, I feel blessed and close to the Lord.

Nathan Tasker: I love “Angels We Have Heard On High.” To remember that the angels themselves could not contain their joy at the news of Jesus’ birth is a great reminder of how we should respond to the good news at Christmas!

Jason Bare: “What Child Is This?” has to be one of my favorite Christmas songs. I just love the melodies and the lyrics. This song reminds us that HE IS CHRIST THE KING! No matter where I am during the Christmas season I can hear this song and it IMMEDIATELY puts me in the Christmas mood! (Well, that and “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree.”)

Matt Papa: "O Come, O Come Emmannuel."  I like songs that utilize melody to paint the emotional picture that the lyrics express. There is such longing in the lyric and the melody--dissonance, anticipation, etc.--that sets up the celebration of the incarnation beautifully.

The Sonflowerz (Becca): I think it changes every year. Lately, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” has been a favorite because of the clear message of the Gospel. It paints this beautiful picture of the Light of the world overcoming the darkness through His birth. The song has a minor feel, which I love.

David Ian: My favorite Christmas song is "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)."  It reminds me of putting up and decorating our family Christmas tree. My family had a cassette tape that we had used to record Christmas Classics to directly from the radio. When you heard the sound of Nat King Cole's voice illuminate the room with his timeless recording while the tree was going up,  you knew Christmas time had arrived.

Sara Groves: "Silent Night."

Cortni: I love the song "Joy To The World!" This song is so special to me because it puts me in the Christmas spirit and I always sang this at my church when I was younger!

Andrew Greer: "In the Bleak Midwinter." The third verse says it all: "What can I give him? Poor as I am/If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb/If I were a wise man, I would do my part/Yet what can I give him? Give him my heart."

Mosaic: Our favorite Christmas song has got to be “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” for a few different reasons. This particular song is what started Mosaic in the first place. We were really just a group of college friends who had met together to eat a Christmas dinner before our Christmas break. We decided to start singing some songs together and came up with a version of “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” that was full of six-part harmony. That night, we decided to record a Christmas album as a group over the next year before graduating from school. The recording was meant to be just for us and our families, but the Christmas album that formed from that night ended up being Mosaic’s first album. So, this song played a crucial part in guiding us toward the ministry that God had prepared for us. Also, over the last few years of singing the song, we have come to really treasure the content and cry of longing for the Savior to come. It is a great reminder of the longing God’s people felt before the birth of Christ, and that longing is echoed in our hearts as we cry and long for His return today.
