“God says YES to His promises, Take Him at His Word,” exclaims the chorus of the new song “Yes” by John Waller.
Here’s a story from IVP’s Bible commentary: “Two young girls were talking, and one said she had ten pennies. The other girl looked at her hand and only saw five. She said, ‘You only have five pennies.’ The first girl replied, ‘I have five, and my father told me he would give me five more tonight. So I have ten.’
“She understood that her father's promise was as good as done. So it is with God's promises. And God's faithfulness in and through Jesus was preached by Paul without any wavering or inconsistency, so that the consistency of his message ensured the consistent character of his motives and actions.”
John Waller--the popular recording artist who touched the world with the extraordinary song "While I'm Waiting" from the motion picture
Fireproof--is back with a brand new collection of Scripture-based songs and declaration-style anthems designed to inspire listeners to fight the good fight of faith.
Waller's eagerly anticipated enhanced album,
As For Me and My House, released in May 2011 through Provident-Integrity Distribution. It is his first project since signing with Nashville-based City of Peace Media.
Waller first captured the attention of the Christian music community as front man for the pop band,
According to John. But the talented Georgia native laid down his aspirations for a career as a performing artist when he and his wife Josee felt led to move to Colorado to help establish a new church. Songs that were birthed in Waller during that time opened new doors for the worship leader, and his major label debut,
The Blessing, introduced his music to a wider audience. His follow-up solo project included the powerful title track, "While I'm Waiting."
"I suffered with depression for so many years," Waller confesses. "I was in bondage but the Lord set me free. He healed me and taught me a lot about blessing and speaking life. Many of the songs on my first solo album came out of that. The Lord has given all of us so many promises that are ours for the taking, yet there is a battle to lay hold of what God has promised us."
“Yes” is a great and powerful song from the new album by John Waller. I had the great privilege to speak with John about the song.
Please describe the message behind the song “Yes.”
I had the idea for the song a couple of years ago. I memorized a lot of Bible verses back when I was in college and that has helped me as a songwriter to incorporate Scripture right into my song lyrics. This particular song is based on 2 Corinthians 1:20. Amen means “so be it” or “let it be done.” If we take anything to God, He responds and His Word never returns void. His promises are always true. He will not deny His Word. I wanted to incorporate that idea into a song.
I couldn’t quite get the music right after working on the song many times. When I was going to the studio to record the album As For Me And My House, we set up a songwriting session with Mac Powell from Third Day. We spent several hours together and I brought the idea of this song looking for a fresh perspective to help me simplify the idea to make a user-friendly song. Mac has a gift for making a song accessible. We wrote the song pretty quickly.
Which Bible verses go with the message of the song?
2 Corinthians 1:20: “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through Him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.”
How can listeners apply that message when they listen to the song? Do you have any personal application regarding your walk as a Christian in the song?
I want people to understand that prayer is more about taking the Truth of Scripture and bringing it to the Lord. There are enough promises covering everything that we could ever possibly need or imagine in His Word already. We need to get away from prayers saying Lord, do this or that, or Lord bless this or that. It’s more about, “Lord, Thy will be done.”
It’s good to remind people that God says “Yes” to His promises. For a couple of years, like anyone else, I was tempted to lean on the systems of man and wanted to see things happen in my career easily. That hasn’t been my journey or my story at all. That’s been good. Like I say in my song “As For Me And My House,” like sheep we’ve all gone astray. We’re prone to wander like sheep. When things click along fine, I’m prone to wander. Sometimes we want to be able to lean on what we can see, something visible instead of trusting God. Because God loves us, He puts us in situations where we’re forced to trust Him. That’s been my story. When I pray, I don’t list what I want anymore; I go straight to His promises and I know they are true. I know He’ll supply for all of my needs.
Lyrics:
Ask, it shall be given to you Seek, and you will find Knock and the door will open and that's a promise
He said He'll finish the work He started in you Your needs He will supply He'll never leave you nor forsake you and that's a promise
It's a guarantee it's a beautiful thing
He delights to keep His word God says YES to His promises Take Him at His word Yea, you can believe it God says YES to a child-like faith when we claim everything He died to give God says YES
He said, come all you weary ones and He will give you rest His strength is perfect in our weakness and that's a promise
God says YES to His promises Take Him at His word Yea, you can believe it God says YES to a child-like faith when we claim everything He died to give God says YES
IVP’s Bible commentary: “Paul goes on in verses 18-22 to answer the church's complaint from the standpoint of his role as a preacher of the gospel, arguing from the integrity of the message that he, Silas and Timothy had preached to them—and which they themselves affirmed by their Amen—to the integrity of the messengers themselves. Paul employs a greater-to-lesser line of argumentation that was in common use, especially in Jewish circles. God is faithful. How do the Corinthians know this? They know this preeminently through the Son of God in whom there was and is no fickleness or inconsistency. For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ. Put simply, Jesus is the very embodiment of God's faithfulness, for God has fulfilled and continues to fulfill every one of his promises in and through Him. The Corinthians affirm God's faithfulness to his promises when through Christ they say "Amen" to the preaching of God's Word.”
