BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#241 - "Miracles" by Newsboys
Jeff Frankenstein and Duncan Phillips talk to NRT's Kevin Davis about the miracles in their own lives.

Combine the strengths of two supergroups that have sold millions of records, achieved an astounding number of No. 1 radio hits and received numerous Dove Awards. The result: A reborn Newsboys. Now that longtime members Jody Davis (guitar), keyboardist Jeff Frankenstein and drummer Duncan Phillips have welcomed the vocal strengths, writing talents and boundless energy of former dc Talk member Michael Tait to the band, this is clearly a good reason to feel born again and share some new songs. Last year, Newsboys released their 15th studio project, aptly titled Born Again.

It is their best overall album in my opinion, and one of my top 10 albums of 2010. I had the chance to interview Jeff Frankenstein and Duncan Phillips at Winter Jam in Reading, Penn. about their hit single “Miracles,” a song that also is featured as a remix on Born Again: Miracles Edition.

Please describe the message of the song "Miracles."

JEFF: Like we’ve talked about together with our other “Behind the Song” discussions about “In The Hands of God” and “Way Beyond Myself,” sometimes miracles are the little things that happen in our lives, as opposed to big things that we read about in the Bible--kind of like our transformation. When we come to know Christ and the Gospel, that changes us. That’s the miracle before our eyes as in the lyrics of the song. It’s also a testimony song about Michael and the transformations in his life. It was one of the last songs we wrote for the album. It was totally different, and then we changed it and made a music video for the song and played the song in concert.

DUNCAN: Michael joining us in Newsboys has been very personal for me and the rest of the band. I’ve seen miracle after miracle in my life. If you would have told me three years ago our old lead singer was leaving and Michael was joining the band, I would have not believed any of it. To see what’s happened these last two years... we’re all living miracles from the result of Born Again. For that to be our biggest-selling album--when you get older and think maybe we’re winding down as a band after 20 years--God showed us grace and mercy as a band. God’s not done with Newsboys. We’re living proof that a Christian band can be sustained beyond the normal cycle. I can’t believe I still get to do what I love to do.

Which Bible verses go with the song?

Matthew 17:20-21:
He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

How can listeners apply that message when they listen to the song?

DUNCAN: The continuation of our band was never a given. When you’re on the precipice of falling off a cliff, it’s such a leap of faith. On a personal level, we were facing the demise of our careers. It was a huge, monumental change in our lives. We can look back now and say it was all God’s plan, but we went through a lot of uncertainty and had to trust in God for a “miracle.” Our God is 100 percent faithful; He’s always faithful to His children.

JEFF: My wife was about to have a baby when Peter announced he was stepping down from Newsboys. Although the transition to Michael Tait as lead singer is working out great, this song has really been our band’s anthem as we’ve gone through this transition. The precursor of what we went through with the financial stress of the economy, Pete’s leaving the band, and many of life’s unexpected circumstances, the message is to trust God. He is amazing! I believe in miracles.

Here are the lyrics:

You ever seen a brother or sister
who could cure a disease?
I hadn’t but I wanted to show the world that nothing’s impossible if they can believe
They’re gonna see a miracle
I didn’t know what to do
so I went running to You to find that cure
Now I know for sure…

I’m done looking around, I finally figured it out
It’s more than metaphysical
You got me up from down,
faith has shattered my doubts
I believe in miracles

I knew what I wanted to do but just like gravity’s pull I always did the opposite
Life was a meaningless party,
I started to fall into a bottomless hole
But then I got a miracle
Some people don’t have a clue
if all of this could be true
But take a look at me – I was blind but now I see…

There’s something that’s missing if we can’t recognize that our own existence
Is the miracle before our eyes

Here’s the IVP Bible Commentary about Matthew 17:20-21: “Jesus explicitly attributes their inability to the smallness of their faith, pointing out that even a mustard seed's worth of faith would be sufficient to cast out not merely demons but mountains. The disciples already recognized how small a mustard seed was. Ancient peoples thought of mountains as rooted far beneath the earth, so 'moving mountains' was a typical Jewish teacher's image for doing what was virtually impossible. With this illustration Jesus indicates that even were we casting out mountains rather than demons, we would only be scratching the surface of a life of faith. What could we do with faith greater than that of a tiny mustard seed! Like children who have only begun to walk, most of us have only begun our adventure of faith.”

The song is about faith and letting God’s plans be revealed in your life. The band’s situation was a modern-day example of their faith being tested and needing to rely completely on Go--and, in essence, pray for a modern day “miracle.”

The Born Again: Miracles Edition album really reflects my life story as well, communicating that we need to die to ourselves and allow the Holy Spirit to wash over us and believe these profound words with all of your hearts: “It’s more than metaphysical, You got me up from down, faith has shattered my doubts, I believe in miracles.” This has become my most played song ever by this legendary band and I can’t get enough of the musical hooks and incredible biblical truth.
