BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#235 - "Something in Your Eyes" by Shonlock
What IS that in your eyes tonight? Shonlock tells NRT's Kevin Davis what's in the eyes of Jesus' followers.

An important emerging voice on the new spirit-filled pop and urban scene, Deshon "Shonlock" Bullock takes his sonic inspiration from R&B and contemporary pop and rock music, finding a high energy groove in the fields of the Lord.

A master showman who sold more than 15,000 CDs out of his suitcase to newly converted fans at his concerts, Shonlock shares his connection to God's love and his love of God's music with his audience every time he hits the stage.

The road to Shonlock’s solo artistry and national debut album, the palindromed NEVERODDOREVEN was paved with a wide array of unconventional behind-the-scenes experiences supplementing the music industry’s heaviest hitters.

Plucked out of his Chicagoland high school by R. Kelly’s management team based on his ultra-slick dance steps, the eventual MC/singer/songwriter/producer joined R&B powerhouse Aaliyah and hip-hop pioneers Arrested Development on tour as a choreographer and dancer. From there, his name spread throughout the industry like lightning, inspiring a call from fellow Grammy-nominated revolutionaries Grits--which didn’t just open a slew of additional career doors but also led to an entirely new perspective on life in general.

Besides offering his choreography to TobyMac’s Diverse City Band, Shonlock also became a guest vocalist/performer, and still holds that position today.

I had the chance to speak with Shonlock in Atlanta before the Dove Awards about his chart-topping, No. 1 hit song, “Something In Your Eyes.” (You can watch the video interview here.)

Please tell me about the background message behind the song "Something In Your Eyes."

The message is all about my relationship with God and walking with Him. I never find it odd when amazing things happen. But on the flip side, with the ultimate sacrifice of His Son, I could never get even, which makes me forever indebted to Him. The opening lyrics of the song, “There's not a man who could number the sands of the ocean, control the breeze send a ripple through the sea for motion,” sets the tone for the message of the song. I wanted to take the song and really listening to the music, it gave me the courage to talk about God and His revelation. Being able to see His work. The Bible says, “the Heavens declare the glory of God.” The song talks about how awesome God is and how much He loves us.

Do you have a life verse or any Bible verses you used in writing the song?

Psalm 19:1-3: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.”

What do you consider to be the takeaway message for listeners?

“Something In Your Eyes” is an anthem of hope that reminds listeners from all walks of life that God is always around, even through life’s mundane moments and the roadblocks that inevitably pop up in everyone’s path. The song is about hope; when you accept the Lord Jesus, other people can see hope in you. Looking up at the heavens, there’s something that lets us know we all have a Creator. There’s nothing we can accomplish in life without the Holy Spirit. Despite everything I’ve been naturally gifted to do, nothing compares to the life we have in Christ.

Here are the lyrics:

There's not a man who could number the sands of the ocean
Control the breeze send a ripple through the sea for motion
And it feels just like you're showing me a love song
And it feels just like you're telling me to hold on

I see something in your eyes tonight and it glows
Letting me know I'm never alone

I see something in your eyes tonight and it shows
I'll never let go, I'll never let go

Mended the pieces to my heart when my heart was broken
Put me together again the doors of grace were open

When I'm feeling like the world is on my shoulders
When I'm feeling like I just cannot go on

I see something in your eyes tonight and it glows
Letting me know I'm never alone

I see something in your eyes tonight and it shows
I'll never let go, I'll never let go

Sing it with me now, come on if you're ready to go
let's blow the stratosphere
Sing it with me now, come on if you're ready to go

I see something in your eyes tonight and it glows
Letting me know I'm never alone

When I look into the sky, I feel so alive
When I look into your eyes

I see something in your eyes tonight and it shows
I'll never let go, I'll never let go

I see something in your eyes tonight and it glows
Letting me know I'm never alone

I see something in your eyes tonight and it shows
I'll never let go, I'll never let go

When I look into your sky, I feel so alive
When I look into your sky, I feel so alive
When I look into your eyes
When I look into the sky.

Here’s Matthew Henry’s Bible commentary on Psalm 19: “From the things that are seen every day by all the world the psalmist, in these verses, leads us to the consideration of the invisible things of God, whose being appears incontestably evident and whose glory shines transcendently bright in the visible heavens, the structure and beauty of them, and the order and influence of the heavenly bodies. This instance of the divine power serves not only to show the folly of atheists, who see there is a heaven and yet say, ‘There is no God,’ who see the effect and yet say, ‘There is no cause,’ but to show the folly of idolaters also, and the vanity of their imagination, who, though the heavens declare the glory of God, yet gave that glory to the lights of heaven which those very lights directed them to give to God only, the Father of lights.”

NEVERODDOREVEN is a palindrome which spells the same thing forwards and backwards. Deshon explained that the album title is about what an awesome and amazing God we serve. It’s never odd to see God do something amazing. God never gets even for our sins. He sent His Son Jesus to die on behalf of our sins. It’s a play on words and a cool twist. Shonlock’s prayer is to articulate the love of God in a different way musically. He wants his music to bring people closer to God and for listeners to seek God with all their heart. The album and song is all about putting God first. People watch Christians, and this song challenges believers to have “something in your eyes” that shows others the hope that you have in Christ. Amen.

Kevin Davis is a longtime fan of Christian music, an avid music collector and credits the message of Christian music for leading him to Christ.
