BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#232 - "Always" by Beth Williams
NRT's Kevin Davis discovers that the singer-songwriter's move away from home is the inspiration for this hit single.

Beth Williams grew up in a musical family, singing in churches with her parents and two older sisters from the time she was old enough to hold a microphone. Her voice was so powerful that she was invited to join the worship team at her home church at the tender age of 10.

She grew in her gifts and skills, but when the call came from a church in Las Vegas looking for a new worship leader, she was hesitant to accept.

"I already had a job at my church in Bakersfield that I was happy with and I didn't relish leaving my home, family and friends to move to a city that, let's face it, doesn't have a reputation for being particularly spiritual," Williams explained. After much prayer and counsel with her pastor, Williams recognized the opportunity to lead the worshippers at Valley Bible Fellowship Las Vegas as a legitimate call from God to be a light in a dark place.

Williams' vivacious personality, glorious vocal ability and obvious grounding in the Lord created such a buzz in the community that record labels soon came calling. N Season Records offered her a recording contract within a week of meeting the young singer, but Williams says she wasn't sure that was the direction the Lord had for her. It would be another six months of prayerful consideration before she felt the nudge of God's hand, urging her out of her comfort zone once again.

Williams approached recording her debut album, You Can Be Loved, with prayerfulness, seeking to produce music that will encourage believers while also attracting those who may not yet know Christ as Savior. The result is a bright and effervescent collection of worship songs that highlights Williams' unique sound, which has been compared to a cross between Joy Williams and a young Gloria Estefan.

I had the chance to interview Beth about her current single, “Always.”

Please tell me the background message behind writing the song “Always.”

I wrote the song about three years ago, before I moved to Las Vegas. I went to my hometown of Bakersfield, California, to sing at my home church for a women’s luncheon [and] I decided to finish writing my song. I’m not a veteran at writing songs and it was cool to me as I noticed how the song just flowed out of me. I take that as God downloaded the words on my heart and He could spill the song out of me. It came out of a time when I had just moved. I wasn’t feeling homesick, but it was an encouragement and reminder that no matter what, no matter where I am, God’s always with me. I had never moved away before, and my whole family is still there. It was cool that I had an event where I needed to sing the song as it caused me to finish writing the song.

Did you base the song on any Bible verses? Any life verse?

Romans 8:38-40: “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

My dad gave me this Bible passage when I moved to Las Vegas -- Acts 26:16-18: “But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you. I will deliver you from the Jewish people, as well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.”

What's the takeaway message for listeners?

My church, Valley Bible Fellowship, does a lot of outreach. There are a lot of homeless people in the city. I tend to be involved in women’s ministry, and I’ve been a volunteer at a local faith-based pregnancy center called First Choice Pregnancy Services. Women come in of all ages and situations and a lot of them think they are at an abortion clinic. Clearly they aren’t, and it leads to conversations about faith and God. When you first have those conversations, you get really personal. People, for the most part, want to talk about their lives and their situations. It’s so rewarding when people decide to keep their babies.

Las Vegas is a pretty crazy city. There is some serious spiritual warfare and you feel that when you come here. I really believe that God has protection over me. If I wasn't supposed to be here, or if I came here on my own accord, maybe I wouldn't have that kind of protection, and it would be a little harder for me. I have a burden to be an artist who is a genuine follower of Christ and to create music that can be accepted in the mainstream to help draw people to God. My heart is both for people who are in church and those who are not in church. I want everyone to listen to my music and experience God.

Here are the lyrics:

Who am I that You would know my name
Who am I that You’d love me
Who am I that You’d care
But You do, Yeah You do

Who are You that You’re bigger than my storm
Who are You that You’re all knowing
Who are You that You’re God
But You are, yeah You are

Whatever tomorrow brings, I know that You’ll be right here
You’ll never leave nor forsake me
What ever tomorrow brings, I know that You’ll be right here
You’re always, always, always, always here

And every time I slip away
From Your perfect plan
I can feel Your loving heart
And Your mighty hand
Upholding me, upholding me

Here’s Asbury’s Bible commentary on Romans 8:38-40: “The central thought of Romans 8:31-39 is this: Since God is for us, who can be against us? God has done the harder thing—giving his own Son for us; surely he will do the easier thing—give us all the blessings he has promised. He is the only one who can justify, and he has already justified us; who can bring any charge against us? The judge himself, Christ Jesus, died, was resurrected, and now is interceding for us. Surely no one will condemn us. God loves us so much. Surely nothing can separate us from the love God has for us in Christ.”

For me, Beth brings sincerity and relateable themes that get deeper with each listen. My favorite albums are the ones that continue to provide new revelations over time by savoring them, and You Can Be Loved has already done that for me. Beth Williams has pure and strong vocals that remind me of GMA's Dove Award winning worship artist Meredith Andrews.

"Always" is a stand-out track with the overwhelming biblical truth that God will never leave or forsake us. Beth has captivating and catchy songs filled with inspirational lyrics. Don't miss her incredible cover of "In The Light," one of the five great songs on this solid debut album. I'm looking forward to more songs from this up and coming singer-songwriter.
