A DOVE AWARDS EXCLUSIVE FROM THE NRTEAM
Scouting The 2011 Dove Awards - Part 3
Members of the NRT staff chime in about their picks for the 2011 Dove Awards, as well as who they think will walk away with the awards.

Your March Madness bracket busted in round one, and you're looking for something else to obsess over. What to do? Well, the Dove Awards are a slam-dunk!

That's right, the Gospel Music Association's annual honoring of Christian music's best is just around the corner--Wednesday, April 20, taking place at Atlanta's historic Fox Theater. NRT will be reporting live from backstage at the event and the Doves will be broadcast Easter Sunday, April 24, at 7 p.m. (6 p.m. Central) on cable's Gospel Music Channel (gmc).

This week, we continue our series of roundtable opinions regarding the various award categories. NRT Founder Kevin McNeese, Senior Editor Marcus Hathcock, and writers Kevin Davis and Sarah Fine all weigh in on who should win and who will win in each category.

For Part 3, the roundtable makes its picks for Rock Album of The Year, Rock/Contemporary Album of The Year, Pop/Contemporary Album of The Year, Inspirational Album Of The Year, Praise/Worship Album Of The Year, Long Form Music Video and Recorded Music Packaging.

ROCK ALBUM OF THE YEAR

Who Should Win

Kevin McNeese: Flyleaf – Memento Mori
Certainly one of the weakest set of nominations in this category that I can remember in a long time. Honestly, I’m not a huge fan of any of these albums, but Flyleaf’s Memento Mori captured more of my attention than the others.

Marcus Hathcock: Flyleaf – Memento Mori
Flyleaf's long-awaited sophomore effort was largely overlooked in the Christian industry, save the song “Again.” But it was full of amazing, well-written, well-themed poetic songs such as “Missing”, “Set Apart this Dream” and “Beautiful Bride.” Another mark against Flyleaf is that the album dropped very early in the consideration period. But make no mistake, this album rocks. If it was completely open for a vote, I would have put House of Heroes' Suburba on the nominees list, as well as Children 18:3's Rain's A Comin' and Fireflight's For Those Who Wait. And where does Manafest fit into all this?

Kevin Davis: DecembeRadio – LIVE
This is a great album, and my favorite of those nominated. It's sure a strange list of nominees; it's probably not fair for DecembeRadio’s excellent live album--which is basically a greatest hits album--to be against four very good studio albums. I’d have also nominated For Those Who Wait by Fireflight.

Sarah Fine: Disciple – Horseshoes and Handgrenades
Disciple is one of those bands that has been around for years, but has only recently started to get the attention they deserve. A big part of that attention came from their massive 2010 radio hit “Dear X (You Don’t Own Me)”--from the aforementioned Horseshoes and Handgrenades. With their Southern Rock roots, I see Disciple as a harder, modern-day Third Day, and if I remember correctly, it was more than 10 years ago when Third Day won in this category themselves. This would be a great, well-deserved win for these guys.

Who Will Win

Kevin McNeese: Disciple – Horseshoes and Handgrenades
Disciple has won this category twice before, and voters have a history of repeating themselves, even if it's not deserved. We’ll see.

Marcus Hathcock: Disciple – Horseshoes and Handgrenades
There's no question which of the nominees has the biggest widespread appeal in Christian music, larger Christian fan base (I say this because Flyleaf probably has the largest overall fan base), and Christian radio hits. That's Disciple. I like Disciple. While I think Disciple has yet to recreate the awesomeness of their 2005 self-titled album, the singles that have come out of their latest effort will be enough to push them to the win.

Kevin Davis: DecembeRadio – LIVE
Since they won this award for both studio albums represented, they’ll probably also nab the Dove Award. Horseshoes & Handgrenades by Disciple is also a worthy choice.

Sarah Fine: Disciple – Horseshoes and Handgrenades
Many are gonna pull for Flyleaf in this category, and while Momento Mori is a fantastic album, I think Flyleaf winning would, honestly, be too edgy for the GMA. The guys from Disciple knocked this album out of the park and I think the GMA is gonna see that and give the credit where it’s due.

ROCK/CONTEMPORARY ALBUM OF THE YEAR

Who Should Win

Kevin McNeese: tobyMac - Tonight
Newsboys’ Born Again should not only have been nominated in this category, but they would have been my pick as well. I’m not liking half of these nominations. Charlie Hall’s The Rising and John Mark McMillan are completely in the wrong category here and Third Day’s album was weaker than many of their previous efforts. tobyMac’s album is the true standout in this category, unless voters decide Sanctus Real rocks as hard as they do in the ballad department.

Marcus Hathcock: tobyMac -
Tonight
This is a difficult category, given the strength of Sanctus Real's Pieces of a Real Heart. The thing is, I'm not totally sure tobyMac can fit into this category. I'm not sure. It's tough to classify him. I'd almost put him in Pop. But since he's in this category, he's got to win it. Tonight is a tremendous aural journey that truly has something for everyone.

Kevin Davis: Sanctus Real - Pieces of a Real Heart
This is an amazing album by an amazing band. This album also was nominated for a Grammy. They should have also been nominated for Best Group and Artist, and should win an award for “Lead Me.” Another odd list, could have also included Fireflight, and I don’t think either John Mark McMillan or Charlie Hall expected to be nominated in this category, as they both made worship albums.

Sarah Fine: tobyMac - Tonight
I must say, this category baffles me this year. Many fantastic albums were left out and a few that I would consider to be worship albums were nominated. All that aside, I don’t think nominating tobyMac in this category was a mistake at all. His Tonight album was nearly three years in the making and the hard work poured into it shows on each song on this record. In my opinion, it deserves to win.

Who Will Win

Kevin McNeese: tobyMac - Tonight
tobyMac had an incredible year, released a great album and is a leader in the nominations.

Marcus Hathcock: tobyMac - Tonight
Toby is a juggernaut of the GMA, and while I think he faces ultra-fierce competition from Sanctus Real's best album to date and an ever-resurgent Third Day, he will come out on top in the end.

Kevin Davis: Sanctus Real - Pieces of a Real Heart
I’m hoping for a sweep in all categories for Sanctus Real. Due to the Artist of the Year nomination, I can’t rule out tobyMac in this category, which is interesting as Tonight fits so many categories.

Sarah Fine: Third Day - Move
As strange as the list of nominees is this year, they all have one thing in common: they all put out amazing albums in the last several months. But if I had to pick one that has an edge over any of the others, it would be by the guys from Third Day. Move really is a great record that brought the band back to its grungier musical roots. Fans and critics agree, it‘s one of their best albums to date. It would be a treat to see these guys win.

POP/CONTEMPORARY ALBUM OF THE YEAR

Who Should Win

Kevin McNeese:
I really enjoyed Jars of Clay’s The Shelter. I liked the heart behind the album and the music and lyrics were incredibly engaging. Being that this is their only real nomination, I’d love to see them take it home.

Marcus Hathcock: Tenth Avenue North – The Light Meets the Dark

Tenth Avenue North has a tremendous, encouraging, grace- and truth-filled musical masterpiece in The Light Meets the Dark. It's approachable and radio-friendly, but deep and contemplative. This is an album that will minister for decades to come.

Kevin Davis: Jars of Clay – Jars of Clay Presents The Shelter
Based on the category and my opinion of the album overall, this is my choice. Although it’s also nominated for Worship Album of the Year, I would be fine with that outcome as well. I’m surprised to not see Light Up The Sky by The Afters nominated. Also, Tenth Avenue North, Chris August and Natalie Grant certainly are worthy of consideration in this category.

Sarah Fine: Tenth Avenue North – The Light Meets the Dark
I was excited to see these guys nominated in this category this year because the nomination was so well deserved. Between the powerhouse single “Healing Begins” and the affect their current single “You Are More” is having on the radio, these songs showcase a fantastic album by a still relatively new band. If it was up to me, this album would take the award in a heartbeat.

Who Will Win

Kevin McNeese:
Chris August has captured many and with the strength of his other nominations, I believe he’ll continue to be rewarded with Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year.

Marcus Hathcock: Tenth Avenue North – The Light Meets the Dark

I'm starting to feel like a broken record calling for my favorites to win the awards, but I really don't see any of the other albums winning over Tenth Avenue North's. Casting Crowns is the closest competitor, and Chris August is kind of a dark horse, but neither has the muscle and recognition of The Light Meets the Dark.

Kevin Davis: Chris August – No Far Away
This is an infectious choice, and truly a pop album. Naturally, I’m okay with Jars, Tenth Avenue North or Natalie Grant winning, but I think Chris is going to win a couple of awards this year.

Sarah Fine: Casting Crowns – Until the Whole World Hears
I was surprised by the lack of nominations Casting Crowns received in 2011. For the last few years, this band has dominated these awards, and I truly felt like this year, when they most deserved the nominations, they were left out in a few big ones. While I still think the guys from Tenth Avenue North deserve this award, there is no denying Casting Crowns put out a great pop album worthy of recognition. Despite the lack of other nominations, I do believe this will be one they’ll take home for sure.

INSPIRATIONAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR

Who Should Win

Sarah Fine: Sandi Patty - The Edge Of Divine
Who can forget the 11-year Female Vocalist of the Year streak Sandi Patty owned in the '80s?! After fighting some very personal battles in the mid-'90s, the GMA turned away from Sandi Patti’s career for many years, which, in my opinion, was a shame. I’m delighted to see her included in the line-up again these last few years, and I think after a successful year of touring with Women of Faith, this would be a very redemptive win for Sandi.

Who Will Win

Sarah Fine: Brian Free & Assurance – Acapella
It seems as if the GMA favors Southern Gospel acts in this category. I don’t think this year will be any exception.

PRAISE/WORSHIP ALBUM OF THE YEAR

Who Should Win

Kevin McNeese: Passion - Awakening
Well, I was disappointed to not see Lincoln Brewster or John Mark McMillian in this category, and Jars Of Clay’s The Shelter makes no sense. I’m frustrated with some of the category selections this year as I feel they are taking the spots of true leaders in these categories. That said, Passion: Awakening is an excellent album with one of the most awarded worship leaders in our industry leading songs like “Awakening” and “Our God.” From this list, that’s my choice.

Marcus Hathcock: Passion - Awakening

This is a great group of nominees, with some of my favorites in the running. Although the Hillsong project was strong and memorable, the praise and worship album of 2010 certainly was the Awakening album from Passion. It's basically an unfair advantage to bring many of the world's best worship leaders together. Would've liked to have seen The Medicine by John Mark McMillan, We Still Believe by Kathryn Scott and Carlos Whittaker's Ragamuffin Soul among the nominees.

Kevin Davis: Meredith Andrews - As Long As It Takes
I can’t get enough of this album. To me, this is my top praise and worship album, and Jars of Clay Presents The Shelter is my top pop/contemporary album. There's a pretty good list of choices here, but I’m surprised I don't see The Medicine by John Mark McMillan, The Rising by Charlie Hall and Beautiful Things by Gungor in this category. Worship music is so big, deserving worship albums are being nominated in different categories... an interesting development, for sure.

Sarah Fine: Passion - Passion - Awakening
When David Crowder Band, Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman and several others join forces, you get what could be one of the most influential worship albums of the year, which is exactly what Awakening was for the church in 2010. “How He Loves”, “Like A Lion”, and “Our God” are just a few of the songs that made this album great, and I fully believe it deserves the Dove award for Worship Album of the Year.

Who Will Win

Kevin McNeese: Passion - Awakening
Voters won’t be able to walk completely away from Chris Tomlin, and he’ll continue to dominate this category.

Marcus Hathcock: Passion - Awakening

There's no denying that while other albums in this category are strong, the Passion project provided the worship anthems of the Church in 2010 (and beyond).

Kevin Davis: Passion – Awakening
Based on sales and the radio success of “Our God” by Chris Tomlin and the worship anthems “How He Loves” performed by David Crowder Band and “Healing Is In Your Hands” by Christy Nockels, this album probably wins. I can’t rule out A Beautiful Exchange by Hillsong Live or We Cry Out by Jeremy Camp, but this Passion album is among my top worship albums.

Sarah Fine: Passion - Awakening
Hillsong’s A Beautiful Exchange would be a very close second, but I think Passion is gonna walk away with the win this year.

LONG FORM VIDEO OF THE YEAR

Who Should Win

Kevin McNeese: Hillsong LIVE - A Beautiful Exchange
Hillsong LIVE beautifully captures their events and I think voters are taking a breather from Casting Crowns this year. With their few nominations, I don’t see them taking over any Doves, which will truly be a first for the group. The other choices are obscure Southern Gospel selections, leaving me to wonder…do Christian music fans not watch long form videos?

Marcus Hathcock: Hillsong LIVE - A Beautiful Exchange

As inspiring and touching as the songs from Hillsong are, it's even more fun and encouraging to see the team—this time from all over the world—worshiping the Lord. I'd like Hillsong to win this one.

Kevin Davis: Hillsong LIVE - A Beautiful Exchange
It comes down to Hillsong against Casting Crowns, and I’ve attended both concerts. Both are worthy selections and put you right there with the deserving bands.

Sarah Fine: Casting Crowns - Until The Whole World Hears… Live
Casting Crowns has a way of putting on a show that brings people to their knees, and it’s proven with every live album or DVD they’ve released to date. Passionate lyrics, straightforward worship, and a driven fan base in the crowd always makes their shows very powerful. There is no denying: this DVD is a big contender for the win.

Who Will Win

Kevin McNeese: Hillsong LIVE - A Beautiful Exchange
Hillsong LIVE has this one locked up based on their company and the quality they always put in to their videos.

Marcus Hathcock: Casting Crowns - Until The Whole World Hears… Live

I'd be happy to see Casting Crowns win. While their albums are powerful, their live show is exponentially more so, and this DVD captures some of that. Casting Crowns has the muscle to pull this one off, and it would be well deserved.

Kevin Davis: Hillsong LIVE - A Beautiful Exchange
For years now Hillsong has set the trend in worship music and their production is top-notch. Their music is meant to be experienced live so this is the next best thing.

Sarah Fine: Casting Crowns - Until The Whole World Hears… Live
There is some pretty even competition in this category this year, but I think it’s the fan power behind this band that will give them the win

RECORDED MUSIC PACKAGING

Who Should Win

Sarah Fine: House of Heroes - Suburba
This is one of the most overlooked categories in the Doves, yet it is one of my absolute favorites (I’m a sucker for CD liners.) House of Heroes were overlooked in all the rock categories this year, disappointing in my opinion, which is why I’d love to see them take this award home. If not for the music, then for the brilliant artwork and idea that comes along with it.

Who Will Win

Kevin Davis: Third Day - Move
Based on the cool artwork and previous win for Revelation, the Atlanta natives should nap this award again.

Sarah Fine: Jeremy Camp - We Cry Out: The Worship Project
As someone who bought both the digital and the retail versions of this album, I was surprised to see the difference in the packaging. The digital and the retail artwork are completely different, the retail being much more detailed and beautiful, which is a big reason why I still opt for a physical CD from time to time. If House of Heroes doesn’t take this award, I definitely think Jeremy will.
