Popular Christian artist Matthew West’s powerful new single, “Good,” is among his most personal and spiritually revealing songs to date. Known for hits like “Forgiveness,” “Do Something,” and “Truth Be Told,” Matthew has built a career on honest, faith-rooted storytelling—but this song takes that transparency even deeper.
In “Good,” Matthew opens up about his lifelong struggle to understand grace. As a preacher’s kid and now a well-known singer-songwriter, he shares the pressure he’s felt to be “good enough,” only to realize that God’s love isn’t something we earn—it’s a gift. The song captures the tension between striving and surrender, pointing listeners back to the heart of the Gospel: we are loved not because we’re worthy, but because God is good.
I had the opportunity to speak with Matthew about the personal story behind “Good,” the Scripture that shaped its message, and the powerful reminder it offers to anyone who feels like they're falling short.
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
“Good” is about my lifelong journey to understand God’s grace. As a preacher’s kid, I admit I’ve felt a lot of pressure to be “good” growing up. As an adult, the pressure has continued on a different level as a singer-songwriter. In my quest to do all the right things and obey all the rules, I find myself falling short again and again.
I’ve spent my life treating grace like a ladder I had to climb — if I did enough good things, then I’d be worthy of God’s love. But He keeps showing me that grace isn’t a reward or something I have to earn, it’s a gift freely given. That powerful truth did more than inspire this song; it has changed my life.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Romans 5:8 (NLV): “But God showed His love to us. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 3:24-26 (NLV): Anyone can be made right with God by the free gift of His loving-favor. It is Jesus Christ who bought them with His blood and made them free from their sins. God gave Jesus Christ to the world. Men's sins can be forgiven through the blood of Christ when they put their trust in Him. God gave His Son, Jesus Christ, to show how right He is. Before this, God did not look on the sins committed. But now God proves that He is right in saving men from sin. He shows that He is the One Who has no sin. God makes anyone right with Himself who puts their trust in Jesus.
Hebrews 4:16 (NLT): So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
2 Corinthians 12:9 (NKJV): "And He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore, most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me."
2 Corinthians 5:16-19 (NIV): "So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we no longer do so. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here. All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting people's sins against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation."
What is the takeaway message?
“Good” is about abandoning the pressure to be perfect and embracing God’s unconditional grace. With my lifelong struggle to stop treating grace as a reward to be earned, I hope this song reminds listeners that they are loved because God is good, not because of their own goodness.
The song is designed to encourage anyone feeling they are not "good enough" to know that God's grace is sufficient and transformative. In the song, the lyrics "I'm not loved because I'm worthy, I'm loved because He's good" are a reminder of the Gospel for all of us.
Lyrics
I used to think grace was a ladder Every sinner had to climb If only I could just do better I could earn it over time
Tried to work my way to good Trouble is, I never could But then you showed me Just exactly how grace works
I’m good at always falling down You’re good at never giving up I’m good at getting turned around You’re good at saying I’m still loved And I was wrecked by mercy The day I understood I’m not loved because I’m worthy I’m loved because you’re good
I think Paul wrote the book of Romans For people just like me For all the beat up and the broken Who needs to know that grace is free
Why do I do the things I shouldn’t And I don’t do the things I should That’s just the proof You’re the only part of me That’s good
I’m good at always falling down You’re good at never giving up I’m good at getting turned around You’re good at saying I’m still loved And I was wrecked by mercy The day I understood I’m not loved because I’m worthy I’m loved because you’re good
Loved because you’re God I’m loved because you’re faithful to me even when I’m not Oh God, you are so good When there’s nothing good in me Just a grateful sinner saved by You Is all I have to be
I’m good at always falling down You’re good at never giving up I’m good at getting turned around You’re good at saying I’m still loved And I was wrecked by mercy The day I understood I’m not loved because I’m worthy I’m loved because you’re good
Loved because you’re God I’m loved because You’re faithful to me even when I’m not Oh God, you are so good When there’s nothing good in me Just a grateful sinner saved by You Is all I have to be
And I was wrecked by mercy The day I understood I’m not loved because I’m worthy I’m loved because you’re good
Closing Thoughts
“Good” is our eleventh song discussion together. I’ve reviewed Matthew’s music since I began my Behind the Song devotional ministry in 2008. His smash hit, "The Motions," was song #41 in the series, a perfect fit for Matthew's music ministry, past and present. Together, we continue to explore the stories and scripture connected to his songs of faith. From the opening notes, you'll be captivated by this stirring, emotional song. This song does an excellent job of explaining what grace is.
God's mercy and grace are new each day and are not based on our performance or what we can do for God. He pours out His mercy despite what we've done. There's nothing we can do except trust in His Son, Jesus. My pastor uses the acronym "God's riches at Christ's expense" to define grace. As I get older, I find myself thinking more about how well I'm living for Christ and showing His love. Remember that Jesus loves us unconditionally.
When you sing this song, the devotional thought to consider is whether we are submitting our lives to the truth or merely singing the words. God wants us to boldly approach the throne of mercy and grace to receive what we need from Him.
When we acknowledge our identity in Christ in this song, our burdens are lifted. The beauty of grace is that we get another chance. I can't get enough of the beautifully poetic and powerful expressions of faith in this song.
We can lift our hands in confidence to God and know that His mercy is unfailing. His love is never-ending. He is our refuge and our strength. God's ultimate will is not to afflict people but to restore us so that we may experience His unfailing love.
There are several lyrics that really speak to me, in particular: “And I was wrecked by mercy/The day I understood/I’m not loved because I’m worthy/I’m loved because You’re good.” Amen to that.
