NRT Music artist SAPHIRE continues to establish a unique presence in Christian music with songs that explore often-unexplored themes. Her latest single, “Jealous,” is a bold and deeply personal anthem focused on the fierce, relentless love of God—a love that pursues us, longs for our whole heart, and refuses to be ignored. Co-written with Tyler Moody and Tony Wood, the song offers a powerful depiction of a holy, passionate God who desires an intimate, unwavering relationship with His people.

Known for her authenticity and heart for ministry, SAPHIRE infuses her music with her personal story and spiritual convictions, crafting songs that both challenge and comfort listeners. I had the chance to speak with her about the meaning behind “Jealous,” the inspiration for writing about God’s passionate pursuit, and the message she hopes resonates with those who hear it.

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

“Jealous” paints the picture of a God who is not distant or passive, but jealous in the most holy, powerful way–longing for our whole heart and going to great lengths to win it. It explores the concept of a "jealous" God, defined as a holy, passionate desire for a relationship with humanity.

I like to write songs about topics that aren’t typically written about in Christian music. This song is a raw and passionate anthem about the fierce, unrelenting love of God—a love that refuses to be ignored and pursues us even when we run.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

John 8:36 (NIV): "So, if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."

Luke 15:3-7 (NIV): Then Jesus told them this parable: "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn't he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.' I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent."

1 John 3:16 (NIV): “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.”

Psalm 63:4 (VOICE): "I will bless You with every breath of my life; I will lift up my hands in praise to Your name."

Acts 2:28 (VOICE): Instead, You direct me on a path that leads to a beautiful life. As I walk with You, the pleasures are never-ending, and I know true joy and contentment.

Deuteronomy 31:6 (NKJV): "Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you."

Hebrews 13:5 (NKJV): Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."

1 John 3:1 (NLT): See how very much our Father loves us, for He calls us His children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don't recognize that we are God's children because they don't know Him.

What is the takeaway message?

“Jealous” explores the relentless, passionate pursuit of a person's whole heart by a loving God who is not distant but actively longs for and strives to win a believer's love. God’s love is persistent and unwavering, chasing after us even when we try to turn away. The song is not about human jealousy but offers a spiritual interpretation of divine love.

This song serves as a reminder that we are relentlessly pursued, fully known, and deeply loved. With each note, I hope this song both challenges and comforts listeners, pointing us back to the One whose love is worth everything.

Lyrics

I see you draw near Jerusalem
Tears fallin’ down
I see you there in the temple
Tables on the ground

Oh, what a passion
All for a people
That you marked as your own
You were fighting for devotion
That belongs to God alone

You chased me down, you would not give up
To steal me back from lesser loves
You would not have only half my heart
Cause Jesus, that’s just who you are
Your love is jealous

Your heart burns for the prodigal
Time after time
You always run
Chasin’ the one
God, you leave the 99

You chased me down, you would not give up
To steal me back from lesser loves
You would not have only half my heart
Cause Jesus, that’s just who you are
Your love is jealous

Now for all my days
You get all my praise

Closing Thoughts

“Jealous” is a passionate Christian anthem detailing the intense, holy love of God. The central truth is that He has called us by name and given us our identities in His family. "Who the Son sets free is free indeed" (John 8:36) is Scripture about freedom and identity.

You are a child of God. That can never be threatened or taken from you. Jesus loves us so much that He came down and took our punishment so that we can be with Him forever. “Jealous” speaks to a God who is “jealous for us” (Exodus 34:14) and is a “God who weeps” (John 11:35) and is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18).

SAPHIRE is clearly a grateful believer who is unashamed of her salvation, and many of her songs are invitations into her prayer life. If you don't know how to word your prayers of thankfulness for what Jesus has done for you, just sing along with this incredible song of faith. We all need to remember that we can't save ourselves. Only Jesus can give us our true identity.

Although we are all guilty and deserve judgment, our sinless Savior’s blood offers the chance to rewind to innocence, reborn, perfect as a child. This song is a powerful expression of what it means to accept that God never leaves or forsakes us as His followers. He is all we need.

The song challenges me to consider what I'm allowing to rule my heart instead of giving myself completely to God. SAPHIRE is clearly in love with Jesus, and the way her songs convey her relationship with our Lord and Savior is truly inspiring and convicting. From this song, I’m challenged to commit to praying more fervently, studying God's Word more diligently, and giving more sacrificially.

Join in with SAPHIRE as she sings: “You chased me down, you would not give up/To steal me back from lesser loves/You would not have only half my heart/’Cause Jesus, that’s just who You are/Your love is jealous.” Amen to that.
