In a fun collaboration that blends the sounds of contemporary artist Tasha Layton with the pop music stylings of Claire Leslie, "Whispers" teaches us that God knows our hearts and hears our prayers, even when we don't have the words.
That's when You see through what I've left unsaid/And You find me when I'm in my head/My prayers are imperfect/Unpolished, uncertain/But when I'm alone in the dark/You hear the whispers of my heart
Presence, Not Performance
I wish it was simple, down the middle/When I've got You on the line/I knock on the back door in case what I ask for/Isn't what You have in mind/Like my words aren't good enough/To unlock Your precious love/You tell me to let go, tell me to let God/But I second guess
How many times have you started to talk to God through prayer and felt like you didn't know what to say? Mind overwhelmed. Heart burdened. Deep need. Desire to cry out to God. But sometimes getting those things out in words seems hard, and the weight of what you're going through makes it feel like you can't even pray.
Maybe you have — as Tasha and Claire sing about in this song — been through things before you met Jesus that make it challenging for you to let your guard down and just talk to God without overthinking it, or simply to trust God in general.
If you find yourself in any of those places, you're not alone. Every Christian has been there at some point or another — myself included. "Whispers" reminds us that God has patience, grace, and love for us amid all those struggles and feelings.
"Whispers" is written from the perspective of these artists, who have personally experienced the same struggles in approaching God and talking to Him, and have also experienced God meeting them with truth in those moments. It's part of what makes the song so powerful. As they sing their own testimonies through these lyrics, they are singing truth over you and me as well. It's the very same truth God's Word speaks to encourage us in this topic.
In Matthew 6:1-13, when teaching on prayer, Jesus taught us that God the Father already knows all our needs before we ask Him. Psalm 139:1-6 encourages us to know that God knows every detail of our lives, including our thoughts. The second verse of "Whispers" highlights this truth: "You know my soul inside and out." Hebrews 4:16 says we can approach the throne of our gracious God and find grace and mercy to help us in times of need. And Psalm 62:8 exhorts us: "O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge." This is the character of God, to whom we are praying, and the privilege of conversation with Him that we get to experience as His children.
You know what that means? The pressure is off.
Thankfully, we don't come before God in prayer to perform. We come before God, our Father and friend, in prayer to find rest and refuge in His presence. We come before God in prayer to pour out our hearts, commune with Him, seek His help, and hear His voice. He welcomes us with love, joy, and open arms. He is a safe place to bear our hearts.
God Will Help You Talk to Him

Romans 8:26-27 (NLT) says: And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don't know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God's own will.
God understands the deep desires, needs, aches, and petitions of our hearts, even when we don't have the right words or the energy to express those things. He gets it, He hears us, and He responds to us even if we don't know how to articulate things in the perfect way. And through His Holy Spirit at work in us, He helps us communicate those things to Him. How? He understands our wordless tears and sighs. He prompts our hearts and minds with Scriptures we can pray back to Him, expressing our emotions, requests, and needs, and revealing promises from His Word we can pray over whatever we're going through.
So many times in my life, I've been going through a struggle, or my heart has been heavy. I couldn't even find words to cry out to God, and I'd pray, "Holy Spirit, help me pray about (thing)." And it's like He clears the fog and gives me language and clarity to verbalize to Him what I felt like I couldn't before. What if the next time you find yourself struggling to pray, you ask God to do these kinds of things for you as well and to help you talk to Him about what's in your heart?
Final Thoughts
Whether you struggle with believing your prayers to God have to be perfect and polished to be meaningful or you run to Him boldly in prayer but can't think of the words to say, let this song remind you He hears the secret cries of your heart, and He's able to help you express those things to Him. He loves to hear your voice. He loves fellowship with you and helping you with whatever you need.
