I’m a big fan of ballads. I grew up listening to love songs by pop stars like Bryan Adams, Richard Marx, and Celine Dion. Christian music icon Amy Grant had one of my favorite ballads, “That’s What Love Is For.” It was exciting to discover she was a Christian artist branching into the mainstream market. Because of this, I’ve always been hopeful about love songs in Christian music. And trust me, they do exist.
I’m not talking about worship music or a praise song about God. I’m referring to a love song sung to the person you love. A song you can share with your spouse or your date. So I’ve gathered a few recent ones that I hope catch your interest. This shows that Christian music has gems perfect for anniversaries, dates, weddings, and more.
for KING & COUNTRY (feat. MŌRIAH & Courtney) – “Ever and Ever Before”
Brothers Luke and Joel Smallbone of for KING + COUNTRY have collaborated on music with their wives, Moriah and Courtney, before. Their single “Pioneers” is a great example. Recently, the two couples released a heartfelt Valentine’s Day-style collaboration that’ll make your heart tingle. It reflects on first times: First date, first meeting, and everything in between. The song reveals the genuine intimacy the two brothers infuse into their music from time to time (“Burn The Ships” and “Pioneers” are examples).
Seph Schlueter -- “Life With You”
Up-and-coming Christian musician Seph Schlueter is an artist to watch. First, he influences Christian music with “Counting My Blessings” and “Won’t Start Now.” And now he presents a Valentine’s-style song, "Life With You." On Facebook, Seph announced the single's release, sharing a photo of a wedding in the background. The ballad “Cause life with You/Is more beautiful than anything.” Words like these make this song multi-faceted; it can be dedicated to a significant other or to our greatest Savior.
Rend Collective – “Wild Love”
Like Seph’s “Life With You,” “Wild Love” by Rend Collective has a message that can be for a significant other or our significant Savior (okay, some lyrics make it clear the message is for God). But some of the lines can serve a purpose for your Valentine’s Day inspiration, particularly the lyric: “Wild, wild, wild, wild love/Can't tame you, can't tame your/Wild, wild, wild, wild love.”
Sarah Reeves – “The Right One”
Contemporary artist Sarah Reeves has crossed over from the Christian music market to the mainstream one. And she releases music for both markets. “The Right One” is a must-listen. It’s an encouraging, no-nonsense anthem about recognizing toxic relationship patterns, refusing to settle, and waiting for a partner who offers respect, emotional maturity, and genuine love rather than manipulation. A line to remember: “He's kind, and he's patient, his arms are the safest.”
NONAH -- "Drive"
Have you ever heard of the husband-and-wife duo NONAH? The couple, Wes and Callie Strunk, create worship music that helps listeners connect with God. “Drive” is one song that fits the bill. It also makes a wonderful Valentine’s Day gift. The song’s lyrics use driving from place to place as a metaphor for a relationship built on trust and faith. It’s a great listen for your Valentine’s Day romance playlist.
