Jenn Chenoweth is a rising singer/songwriter and worship leader from South Florida. Her passion for the Lord led to her debut EP, Out to Get Me. A glimpse into God's loving pursuit of her heart, the autobiographical set features seven tracks all co-penned by Chenoweth and produced by Seth Ready (Seth & Nirva).

Drawing inspiration from Galatians 5 and Psalm 23--passages foundational to Chenoweth's journey--Out To Get Me is hallmarked by a range of synth-pop anthems, reflective ballads and intimate moments of worship. The daughter of a pastor, Chenoweth was raised with a firm foundation of faith, but she grappled with anxiety and low self-esteem for many years and struggled to view God as a loving father. Furthermore, a major accident in 2019 caused Chenoweth's jaw to lock open, leaving her in constant chronic pain from TMJ disorder. "This season really broke my spirit and led to severe depression," she recalls. "Some days I didn't want to get out of bed, and I thought my life was over. Singing and leading worship were things I'd always loved to do, and for two years I wasn't sure I would ever sing again."

Jenn is a former member of the worship team from SEU Worship, which has breathed several new worship anthems into the Church. "Monday Morning Faith," "A Thousand Generations," "Slower I Go," and "Higher Than Mine" consistently bless me as a worshiper. I was excited to hear Jenn's solo album. She writes and sings songs with an amazing passion and with unashamed praise and gratitude to our Savior that is very inspiring and emotionally moving. The eternal love of Jesus is beautifully expressed in these compelling songs. These are great songs to pray along with and express your own yearnings for holiness and God's presence. I had the chance to speak with Jenn Chenoweth about her song, "I'm Learning."

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

"I'm Learning" reflects lessons I learned during my personal journey through uncertainty and pain, particularly my struggle with severe TMJ disorder after a jaw accident in 2019 and the associated loss of my singing voice. The song captures my often uncertain, prayers of doubting and the understanding that God teaches through these periods of doubt. This has guided me as I've stepped into this season of making my own music. "I'm Learning" mirrors the anxiety and surrender in my prayers during this challenging time. I hope this song will encourage and bless others who have experienced hardship, pointing them toward Jesus and fostering a sense of hope.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Romans 8:25 (NKJV): "But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance."

Psalm 46:10 (NKJV): "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!"

Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG): "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to Me. Get away with Me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with Me and work with Me--watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with Me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."

Romans 12:2 (VOICE): "Do not allow this world to mold you in its own image. Instead, be transformed from the inside out by renewing your mind. As a result, you will be able to discern what God wills and whatever God finds good, pleasing, and complete."

Isaiah 55:8-9 (NKJV): "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways," says the Lord. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts."

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV): "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."

Acts 2:28 (VOICE): "Instead You direct me on a path that leads to a beautiful life. As I walk with You, the pleasures are never-ending, and I know true joy and contentment."

Psalm 139:13-14 (NKJV): "For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well."

Psalm 139:17-18 (NKJV): "How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You."

What is the takeaway message?

This song is an honest prayer from a restless heart. This song acknowledges that God teaches and guides believers through periods of uncertainty and a lack of clear answers, rather than expecting immediate understanding. Life moves quickly, and we often feel the tension of not knowing what's next or why God's timing feels the way it does. "I'm Learning" gives voice to those questions while choosing to trust anyway. The heart of the song is surrender -- resting in God even when nothing feels certain. For those stuck in the messy middle, waiting or confused, I pray this song makes them feel less alone and reminds them that the seasons change and they can wait, trusting the Lord because He has a perfect track record.

Lyrics

Point A to point B
It happens so quickly
How do I get there
From where I am standing
If I don't move, will my life pass right by me
It's scary

Must be a rhyme or a reason
You made me
You are the author
And you know my story
Is it bookended or are you still writing
It's scary

I would like to think that I figured it out
But I know I don't, and you welcome my
doubt

I will trust in you from dawn 'til dusk
You know the end, the beginning, and
Everything in between
I will rest when I don't know the rest
If I lose my place, I have faith
That your love will keep me safe

I get impatient and flip through the pages
Sometimes I run when walking's what the
pace is
Your plan is perfect, but it moves in stages
I'm learning

Somebody else has something I think I
need
I start to wither, my heart fills with envy
You are my portion and you're not
withholding
I'm learning
I'm growing

I will trust in you from dawn 'til dusk
You know the end, the beginning, and
Everything in between
I will rest when I don't know what's next
If I lose my place, I have faith
That your love will keep me safe

Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah

I will trust in you from dawn 'til dusk
You know the end, the beginning, and
Everything in between
I will rest when I don't know the rest
If I lose my place, I have faith
That your love will keep me safe

Bridge:
Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah

Closing Thoughts

Having three young daughters, it is exciting to me to hear anointed female singers like Jenn Chenoweth. In this beautiful song, Jenn sings with a passion that is engaging and uplifting, and her lyrics point listeners to Jesus. These women are wonderful role models, serving the Lord with their musical gifts for my daughters to look up to.

The prayerful message of devotion in this song is my heart's cry for my daughters to adopt as well. I want them to connect with Jesus in the same way this song longs for relationship with our Lord and Savior. When we feel like we are on shaky ground and we are dealing with the uncertainty of our situations, the economy and our world, this song allows us to dwell on the unshakable and eternal nature of God and join in on this prayer: "I will trust in You from dawn 'til dusk/You know the end, the beginning, and Everything in between/I will rest when I don't know what's next/If I lose my place, I have faith/That Your love will keep me safe."

When all else fades away, He will remain. I love how prayers and songs of praise are a communal experience that we can all share. I think the Lord wants us to long for Him. He welcomes our questions, and this song makes an intercession: "I would like to think that I figured it out/But I know I don't, and You welcome my doubt." When we've been indwelled by The Holy Spirit, we have a personal relationship with the Comforter and a peace that surpasses understanding to know that this fallen world isn't all that we are living for, ultimately.

I have spent time reflecting on and singing this song to God. And it always gives me comfort. One of my daily devotionals in trying to grow in my walk with Jesus is to sing to Him at least one praise song every day. So, spend time with Him.

Try praying and singing along with this song of faith. Also, read your Bible every day. God wants us to have a that reminder to not be afraid. The cost of discipleship is to make Him the Lord of our lives. I have doubts and questions, and this song invites me to pray over my doubts about myself and learn about what God thinks of me.

Psalm 46:10 is such an encouraging reminder of God's sovereignty and that He has been, is, and always will be with us. If He is with us, we can endure anything.

Jesus died on the cross to set us free from the battle of our minds, as well as from sin and death. He wants us to have abundant life in Him. What a wonderful, encouraging truth.

This song leads me to worship Jesus, like David in the Psalms, sharing my doubts and my hope in God. Sing this song over yourself and to God until you believe it: "I start to wither, my heart fills with envy/You are my portion and You're not withholding/I'm learning/I'm growing." Amen to that!
