When I think about the heart of worship, I can't help but think about Matt Redman's iconic song, "The Heart of Worship," which truly describes what worship on Sunday morning should look like.
Although Sunday morning worship looks different at every church, the heart of worship is not just focusing on the songs we're singing, but preparing our hearts to receive God's word and giving God our undivided attention.
Just like a runner would warm up before running a marathon, worship warms up our hearts and gives us time to pause and reflect on God's goodness before diving into the message the pastor has prepared for us. Worship allows us to invite the Holy Spirit into that dedicated time and space so that our minds are solely fixed on God. "Rest on Us" by Maverick City Music, UPPERROOM, Brandon Lake, and Eniola Abioye is one of those songs that calls for the Holy Spirit to fill the room.
When I'm lifting God's name during Sunday morning worship, it's as if the world fades away and all that matters is that moment with God. It's a peaceful feeling, yet exhilarating as I'm worshiping with other believers, lifting our voices in unison.
For me, along with many others, worship isn't just reserved for Sunday mornings, but there are many times throughout my week that I find myself worshipping God through many of the same songs I sing along with at church. If you don't already have a playlist of worship songs on your phone, I encourage you to add your favorite worship songs to one today for those moments of worship in your car or wherever you find yourself.
