New from Angel Studios, The Senior is based on the true story of Mike Flynt, the oldest man ever to play college football, when he seizes a second chance to play at the collegiate level at age 59.
Actor Michael Chiklis plays the titular "senior" and leads a strong cast, including Mary Stuart Masterson and Brandon Flynn, who all give solid performances. But this is Chiklis's barbecue, and he knows how to cook. Chiklis has played a wide variety of characters in his career, and is a solid fit for the likable everyman lead. He imbues the character with a sympathetic and believable integrity, while also balancing the character's rougher and angrier edges that complicate his comeback.
Sports biopics are familiar to family film audiences. That makes this film both a safe and rewarding experience. Families are generally aware of the kind of film they're getting with this. There's an appropriate amount of sports-related suspense, but enough non-sports drama to keep non-fans of the game engaged. This is the kind of film families can see together and all come away with a smile. In a world filled with bad news and a film industry often darkened by gloom, The Senior stands as a hopeful reminder of the power of second chances.
