Each week, dozens of singles and a handful of projects are released in the Christian Hip-Hop (CHH) and Urban Soul spaces. Below, we have listed a few highlights and included the rest for your review. As always, follow our New Christian Rap and Hip-Hop playlist on Spotify and Apple Music to listen to all the latest.
Vigilante by Derek Minor and Canon Reflection Music Group’s (RMG) Derek Minor and Canon released their collaboration project titled, Vigilante. Described as a “six-year masterpiece representing a beacon of true artistry in a world of disposable sound, the album is substantially more than just music. Vigilante is a cinematic, raw and emotional display of realism capturing the everyday struggles people face. The project embodies human struggles, pain, and suffering transforming such into anthems of hope and resilience. The creative and eclectic soundscape embodies life experiences, culture, and emotional turmoil served as a reminder art still matters and inspiration lies beneath the rubble of daily adventures.
Vigilante features standout singles “Hero,” “Save The Hero,” and “Stand By Me.” Featured artists, while limited, include Alienz Alive’s Aklesso, RMG Amplify’s Brenno, Apollo Records’ Marty, Greg James, Quinten Coblentz, and B. Stokes. The RMG duo desired the audience to focus on the lyrical content and emotion behind each track as opposed to a long list of cameos.
Vigilante is a picturesque example of what God is capable of regardless of our circumstances, miscues or bad decisions. The project challenges listeners to step outside of comfort zones (church buildings) and meet people where the needs are the most urgent (communities and forgotten neighborhoods). The project is a blend of what Christians are called to imitate steering away from the fake, the proud, the hypocritical and the judgmental. The world is in need of not only a hero in the form of our Savior but modeled after believers who equip themselves with the tools to provide aid to the lost, the hurt, the afflicted and the wounded. Mostly not from any form of physical ailments, but scars from sanctuaries masked as court rooms.
Blameless by Jackie Hill Perry Reach Records’ latest signee Jackie Hill Perry drops her debut studio album with the powerhouse label and third overall (Crescendo, 2018 and The Art of Joy, 2014) since 2014. Also, let us not forget to mention 2024’s EP titled Practice reminding the CHH space JHP still can rap near flawlessly.
JHP epitomizes God’s grace of us living in His Divine Timing – His perfect Timing. Four years expired between the first two projects, then fans endured an extended 7-year wait for Blameless. In the meantime, life prepared JHP to deliver a project with meaning, emotion, the scriptures, and introspection. For a few years, she put on her author “hat” while at times wearing her public speaking/teaching “hat” too. The With the Perry’s podcast shared spaces with everything else adding its own flavor to JHP’s knowledge base and experiences. I may be missing a few accolades and such, but JHP stay working.
JHP represents the Voltron, Superion, Megazord, or combined collective mindset of all the Reach artists. She’s theologically based like Trip Lee. She can spit bars for days and weeks at a time like Lecrae. However, she worships throughout her songs like Hulvey. However, she can still connect with the streets like 1K Phew. JHP embodies what CHH should be defined as with the marriage of spiritual, theological, yet able to relate and reach audiences few others in other musical genres can.
Favorites include “Lighthouse” featuring KB, “Menora” featuring nobigdyl., and “I Ain’t Worried. Besides KB and nobigdyl., other featured artists throughout the project include Scootie Wop, Madison Ryann Ward, Aha Gazelle, Ahjah Walls, Project Pat, and Trey Heflin. The variety of sound fits naturally as each voice aids to the overall message from the album.
