Switch, the student worship band of Life.Church—a multi-campus church based in Edmond, Oklahoma—is recognized for using creativity and technology to engage the next generation. Formed initially to lead worship for Life.Church’s youth ministry, Switch, has developed a unique sound that combines modern pop with heartfelt worship, helping students connect with God through authentic and relatable music.

Recently, the band has gained momentum with their Better View EPs, featuring standout tracks like “Letting Go” and the Better View (Deluxe) collection, which focus on finding identity in Christ and learning to “walk by faith and not by sight.” Their latest single, “Still Small Voice,” resonated with listeners through its catchy yet heartfelt reminder to quiet the noise of the world and tune in to God’s presence.

I recently spoke with Cassidy Estevez, a member of Switch and Ministry Leader of Worship Arts at Life.Church, about the band’s inspiring and upbeat new release, “Upside Down.”

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

When we wrote “Upside Down,” we gathered our students to discuss the themes they are facing in their lives. One recurring idea was that the students want to walk with bold confidence, going against culture and being who God has called them to be. It’s a fun song that reminds us that Jesus shows us a better way of living. It’s a soundtrack that gives people the confidence to live a counter-cultural life.

We aimed to give them an anthem to empower them, which can be very intimidating when you are younger in your faith. We genuinely want to inspire listeners to live differently and follow Jesus confidently—even when it means going against what culture considers normal. The song's main message is that when people let God ‘flip their lives upside down,’ everything finally makes sense, and they truly start living.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Romans 8:28 (VOICE): “We are confident that God can orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan.”

1 Corinthians 13:12 (NKJV): "For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known."

Psalm 28:7 (NLT): "The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust Him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving."

Psalm 16:11 (NKJV): "You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore."

Psalm 30:11-12 (VOICE): "You did it: You turned my deepest pains into joyful dancing; You stripped off my dark clothing and covered me with joyful light. You have restored my honor. My heart is ready to explode, erupt in new songs! It's impossible to keep quiet! Eternal One, my God, my Life-Giver, I will thank You forever."

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV): "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."

Proverbs 18:10 (NKJV): “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”

Deuteronomy 31:6 (HCSB): "Be strong and courageous; don't be terrified or afraid of them. The Lord your God goes with you; He will not leave you or forsake you."

Romans 8:37 (NLT): "No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us."

Romans 12:1-2 (NIV): "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, because of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by renewing your mind. Then you can test and approve God's will—His good, pleasing, and perfect will."

Hebrews 11:40 (NIV): "God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be perfect."

2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV): "For we walk by faith, not sight."

What is the takeaway message?

This song challenges conventional perspectives and encourages listeners to see the world through the lens of faith. It was created to inspire people to embrace who God made them to be, stand out boldly from the crowd, live differently, and follow Jesus with confidence—even when it means going against cultural norms.

Thinking about David dancing before the Lord, he experienced a joy that couldn’t be shaken, and that’s what we have when we follow Jesus. It’s an interesting paradox—we can face heavy circumstances and still have joy because our confidence isn’t in what’s temporary but in what’s eternal. Our eternal home is waiting for us, and we were created for a relationship with the Lord that never ends. That’s where our joy comes from.

Lyrics

Something different
God, I need it
I don’t want to be lost in the current
Wasn’t made for
Tunnel vision
So flip the switch
Let me feel it

You think so much differently
Wanna see the way You see
You give me a whole new view
Now the world is feeling new
Lift it up, turn it all around
You turn my whole life upside down

Upside down
You’ve got me
Upside down
You’ve got me
Upside down
But I’m right side up
When I’m upside down

Upside down
You’ve got me
Upside down
You’ve got me
Upside down
But I’m right side up
When I’m upside down

Moving different
Gonna lean in
To the life that You’ve called me to walk in
Wasn’t meant to
Keep it secret
So flip the script
Let ’em hear it

Now I’m thinking differently
Seeing like I’ve never seen
Won’t get tired of the view
My whole world is feeling new
Lift it up, turn it all around
You turn my whole life upside down

Upside down
You’ve got me
Upside down
You’ve got me
Upside down
But I’m right side up
When I’m upside down

Upside down
You’ve got me
Upside down
You’ve got me
Upside down
But I’m right side up
When I’m upside down

Lift it up
Turn it all around
Lift it up
Turn it all around
Lift it up
Turn it all around
I’m right side up
When I’m upside down

Upside down
You’ve got me
Upside down
You’ve got me
Upside down
But I’m right side up
When I’m upside down

Closing Thoughts

“Upside Down” is catchy and reflects the joy we feel when we don't rely solely on our understanding but instead trust entirely in God's power to lift us, no matter our circumstances. Jesus encourages us to depend on Him and the power of His resurrection, reminding us that He has overcome death and fear. We can all say hallelujah and celebrate these truths together while singing along with this song. Our true joy comes from our relationship with Jesus. One lesson I've learned about life is that we shouldn't wait to fix ourselves before stepping out in faith. We need to place our complete trust in God.

Since I started following Jesus, I have come to realize more clearly that success for Christians is defined differently from the world’s definition. Many Christians, including myself, struggle with holding onto our dreams and expectations while allowing God to reveal His will. As Proverbs 18:10 states, God’s name is a strong tower. We can call out to Jesus, and He will keep us safe. This is a truth believers can rely on. We aren't meant to hope it’s true or turn to the Lord only as a last resort, but to be daily cleansed by the truth of God's Word. If we learn to base our lives on Scripture, we will have a solid rock as our foundation to navigate life. We can trust that the words of this song are authentic.

Dictionary.com defines "Happy" as "characterized by or indicative of pleasure, contentment, or joy: a happy mood; a happy frame of mind." Regardless of our circumstances, we need to truly be free in Christ and be happy and filled with joy, like Paul and Silas in prison. One of the greatest ways followers of Jesus can demonstrate to non-believers the upside-down kingdom of God is by living out the words of this song and showing that inner joy, which is supernatural. This joy reveals to those observing Christians walking through valleys that they have the hope and joy of God's love and are living out His plans, without forsaking Him.

Cassidy writes and sings her breath, given to her by God, into anointed new songs for the church. You'll be blessed by this powerful song, which is a standout anthem with a convicting declaration. We can all celebrate the truth behind this song. I hope that people will pray along and live out the truth in these words. Our thoughts are constantly under attack by the enemy.

This song is an excellent way to submit to God and dedicate yourself to Him. That's a reason to sing this uplifting anthem loudly in gratitude to Him. No matter what you're facing, if you're searching for the words to pray to God, sing along with Cassidy: “Upside down/You’ve got me/Upside down/You’ve got me/Upside down/But I’m right side up/When I’m upside down.” Amen to that.
