Welcome to NewReleaseToday’s Couples Corner, where we celebrate love, faith, and music by showcasing couples who inspire both on and off the stage. In this edition, Danny and Janice sit down with worship artist Hannah Kerr—named Female Artist of the Year at the We Love Christian Music Awards—and her husband, Jason. They share their love story, ministry journey, and the joys and challenges of working together. Their testimony reflects a profound love for God, for one another, and for the calling they are living out.
How did you two meet?
Jason: We met in 2015 while attending Belmont University in Nashville. I was acting in a low-budget film, and the producer—who also happened to be Hannah’s music producer—told me I should meet her. That same night, I spotted her in the cafeteria, walked up, and asked if she knew Mark Miller. Not the most romantic start. I had just come from the movie set and still had makeup on, so I looked flawless. Hannah had just gotten off tour and had no makeup on. She thought I had perfect skin—little did she know it was the makeup.
Hannah: I didn’t think it was love at first sight, but I was definitely interested. Jason had the kindest eyes, and I thought he was so tall and handsome. We were friends for a few months before Jason asked me out. By our first date, we both knew this could be something real.
Tell us about that first date.
Hannah: We went horseback riding at Jero Stables, just outside Nashville. Jason grew up riding, so he looked like a cowboy. I was scared but excited. Somewhere along the trail, my phone fell out of my pocket. We retraced our steps together, hand in hand, and that was actually the first time we held hands.
Jason: It was a perfect first date. Hannah was my first serious relationship, and I wanted to make it a memorable one.
How did your love story progress from there?
Jason: We dated for about three and a half years. I proposed on the day Hannah graduated from college, and we married in March 2020. We’ve been married for five years. It’s been a decade-long love story, and now we’re about to step into the new adventure of parenthood.
Who’s the better cook, and what’s your go-to dish?
Hannah: Definitely me. I love trying new recipes, but Jason’s favorite is something we call “Sloppy José’s”—sloppy Joes in taco form with Fritos, cheese, and sour cream. It’s delicious.
Jason: Yeah, it’s not the healthiest meal, but it’s so good.
Who’s the better driver?
Both: Jason.
Who’s funnier?
Hannah: We’re both funny, just in different ways. Jason’s humor tends toward dad jokes and puns, while I lean toward witty humor. We laugh a lot together.
Who said “I love you” first?
Jason: That was me. I wrote a song called “I Love You” for Hannah, where I saved those words for the very last chorus. I played it for her on the roof of my college house. It was six months into our relationship.
Hannah: It was the sweetest moment. We both already knew, but hearing him say it in that way made it even more special.
How did you begin collaborating as a couple in music?
Hannah: At first, it was out of necessity. My brother used to travel with me as my guitarist, but when he got married and stepped back, Jason stepped in to fill the role. He already knew my songs and understood me, so it felt natural. Even before that, in 2016, we wrote our first song together while dating. Since then, we’ve continued to make music side by side.
How do you balance marriage and ministry?
Jason: It can be hard, especially on tour buses with twelve other people. We slip into work mode on the road, but at home, we’re intentional about going on dates and avoiding work talk. That’s been the most challenging part to navigate—keeping our romance alive while also maintaining a professional partnership.
Hannah: We don’t want to fall into a “roommate” phase. So, carving out intentional time together has been key.
What unique challenges have you faced in the Christian music industry as a couple?
Hannah: One big challenge has been people asking, “When are you having kids?” For years, that was tough to navigate. Before getting pregnant, we experienced a miscarriage. That made the question even harder to hear, despite people’s good intentions. It taught us that everyone’s journey to parenthood is different, and sometimes it’s best to ask couples about their marriage rather than their kids.
Have you faced stereotypes about couples working together?
Jason: Definitely. People assume it must be hard or that we wouldn’t like each other all the time. But for us, working together is a blessing. Sure, we have standard arguments, but we genuinely love doing ministry and music together.
Hannah: Our first year of marriage—often said to be the hardest—was actually our favorite year. We’ve learned that we’re not just spouses, but best friends. That makes all the difference.
Hannah, can you tell us about your new podcast?
Hannah: It’s called In the Middle of It, inspired by my song “Same God.” The chorus says, “You’re with me in the middle of it all, God.” I wanted to create a space where people can share openly while they’re still in the middle of a struggle, not just after everything is resolved. Guests discuss a wide range of topics, from infertility and grief to the release of new albums. Some episodes are lighthearted, while others are more serious in tone. Jason is a frequent guest, and I’m so excited for people to listen.
