Contemporary artist Hannah Kerr’s powerful single, “Changed,” marks a defining moment in her music career. With its uplifting message and emotionally resonant lyrics, the song captures the beauty of spiritual transformation and the freedom that comes with following Christ.
Anchored by a soaring melody and Hannah’s signature rich vocals, “Changed” speaks directly to anyone who has wrestled with shame, regret, or the lie that they are too far gone to be redeemed.
The lyrics confidently declare that grace rewrites our stories, offering hope and identity rooted in God’s love. As the lead single from her second studio album, As I Am, “Changed” sets the tone for a deeply personal and spiritually mature project that resonates with anyone navigating through seasons of growth, doubt, and renewal.
With comparisons to contemporaries ranging from Kelly Clarkson to Natalie Grant, Hannah’s seemingly effortless, rich, and pure vocal tone reflects the passion and confidence of a seasoned artist. Hannah’s songwriting is genuine, honest, vulnerable, positive, determined, and self-assured.
Hannah's songs are upbeat and catchy, and she serves as an excellent role model for girls. Her songs convey positive, grace-filled messages of hope that address life's pressures. She recognizes that true happiness and her sense of identity arise from her relationship with God. Hannah won the Female Artist of the Year award and performed “Changed” at NewReleaseToday’s We Love Awards show in Franklin, Tennessee, in April 2025. I spoke with Hannah about her stirring song, “Changed.”
Could you please share the personal story behind this song?
Jesus changed my life when I was 14. This song reflects my own experience of the transformation that occurs when we give our mistakes, guilt, and shame over to Jesus. The message of the song is that no one is exempt from the grace, love, and forgiveness of God. God is still changing lives, and this song tells the story of how He changed mine. I’ve been so excited to share this song with listeners. I co-wrote the song with songwriters Jeff Pardo and Matthew West.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Deuteronomy 31:6 (NKJV): "Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you."
Lamentations 3:22-23 (VOICE): "How enduring is God's loyal love; the Eternal has inexhaustible compassion. Here they are, every morning, new! Your faithfulness, God, is as broad as the day."
Psalm 139:14 (NIV): "I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well."
Psalm 139:17-18 (NKJV): "How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand. When I awake, I am still with You."
Ephesians 2:10 (NLT): "For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago."
Jeremiah 29:11 (VOICE): "For I know the plans I have for you," says the Eternal, "plans for peace, not evil, to give you a future and hope--never forget that."
Romans 8:28 (VOICE): "We are confident that God can orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan."
Philippians 4:13 (NKJV): "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
What is the takeaway message?
“Changed” reflects my journey of faith and the incredible transformation that occurs when we allow God to work in our lives. It serves as a reminder that, regardless of our past mistakes or shortcomings, there is always hope for a brighter future in His love.
I wrote this song while going through seasons of change, fear, joy, and growth.
Through it all, I've learned that I can do nothing to earn God's love. He sees every detail of my life and doesn't change His mind about me. He loves me as I am. This album holds a special place in my heart, and I'm eager for others to hear it.
Lyrics
I've been to the bottom I've been to the edge And I've been down that road that led to failure and regret Oh, but I've been to the one who wrote his love for me in red And I've been changed
I've been hearing voices That sound a lot like shame They try to keep me locked up And say I'll always wear those chains But they're talking to the old me And I don't answer to that name Cause I've been changed
He changed my weeping to rejoicing And my guilty into grace Changed a list of wrongs behind me Into a past erased He changed my wounded into healing And my broken into praise It's a miracle of mercy That I'm standing here today Changed I've been changed
From a sinner stuck in old ways To a child that He made new He saw all the messes I made And said, "I still have plans for you" Now I'm a living testimony There's nothing God can't do Cause I've been changed
He changed my weeping to rejoicing And my guilt into grace Changed a list of wrongs behind me Into a past erased He changed my wounded into healing And my broken into praise It's a miracle of mercy That I'm standing here today Changed I've been changed
So, come and find forgiveness Let your heart believe That no matter where you've been You're just one step away from free Let my story be the proof That anyone can be changed
He changed my weeping to rejoicing And my guilty into grace Changed a list of wrongs behind me Into a past erased He changed my wounded into healing And my broken into praise It's a miracle of mercy That I'm standing here today Changed I've been changed I've been changed
Closing Thoughts
Her catchy single, “Changed,” is a mature effort that finds the songstress wrestling with her insecurities in the light of grace, questioning God’s goodness in the face of hardship, and ultimately accepting the sovereignty of a loving Father in the wake of uncertainty.
After multiple listens, the song's truth becomes more profound with the comforting messages of the Bible that God is love, and we love because He first loved us. The comfort and rest that Jesus offers are beautifully captured in “Changed.”
I can't get enough of this song's poetic and powerful expressions of faith. Hannah depicts the message of identity that we all need to hear: “He changed my wound into healing/And my broken into praise/It's a miracle of mercy/That I'm standing here today/Changed.”
"Changed" is a daily prayer, asking God to come and change our hearts and lives in such a way that our behavior and way of living flow from God living inside us, as believers. Only Jesus can give you your true identity. What a powerful expression of what it means to accept that God never leaves or forsakes you, as one of His followers. He is all we need.
As a Christian father of three young daughters, this song reflects my yearning for Jesus to make us whole, and I also pray that my daughters will feel this in their hearts. I love how this song celebrates God's sovereignty, professing that God is the ultimate ruler over our lives. God doesn’t cause bad things to happen to us. He came to give us life and to allow us to live with Him eternally by trusting in Jesus alone for our salvation. God is greater than any calamity we experience in this world. His love never fails.
Join Hannah and sing along in faith, “So, come and find forgiveness/Let your heart believe/That no matter where you've been/You're just one step away from free/Let my story be the proof/That anyone can be changed.” Amen to that.
