Britt Nicole released her debut album,
Say It on Sparrow Records in 2007, which spawned the hits "You," "Set the World On Fire" and "Believe." Her current single “Hanging On” is her newest hit song from
The Lost Get Found.
The Lost Get Found in Britt’s words is ”
... simply about being who we are called to be as Christians, and through that, seeing the lost get found. I believe that when we become who we are called to be, the lost will come to know God. They will see that God is real, and that His love is greater than any problem, any fear, any sickness.”
The success of “Walk on the Water” merely follows precedent of what has been Britt’s biggest project to date. "God has been so faithful to me, so first and foremost I want to thank Him for giving me songs that help others,” says Britt. “I have never been so moved by people calling into the stations and sending me letters on how ‘Walk on the Water’ has helped them. Thank you to my EMI team and radio for helping me to carry this message of hope to so many that I could have never reached on my own.” Also, “Walk on the Water” was selected to air during the March 23 episode of NBC’s reality hit
The Biggest Loser. Britt is one of my favorite new female artists and has an incredible heart for her ministry and an excellent singing voice. If you like Krystal Meyers, Natalie Grant and Francesca Battistelli, then you'll love Britt Nicole. "Hanging On" opens her new album
Acoustic and is the current single. I really love the great personal nature of the song as Britt sings "I'm hanging on to every word You speak, cause it's all I need."
I got the great opportunity to interview Britt in person at the
Revelation Generation Festival and these are her answers to my questions.
Please tell me personal story behind writing the song "Hanging On."
My music is very pop, and we wanted to do something different with the new acoustic album where people could really hear the lyrics, so we recorded a new version of the song “Hanging On” which comes straight from the Word of God. I was reading my Bible in my house and I was reading Psalm 139 where David says “Your thoughts for me are more than the sand” and then also in Psalm 139 where David says “I will praise You God for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” I feel like I was walking through a season where I was anxious and fearful and that’s easy for me to feel that way about life in general. I think a lot of people get to that place. When I read that Scripture about God thinking about me, I felt comfort. I wanted to write a song to encourage people to turn to God’s Word for comfort.
Do you have a life verse or any Bible verses you used in writing the song?
My life verse is
1 Chronicles 28:20:
And David said to his son Solomon, “Be strong and of good courage, and do it; do not fear nor be dismayed, for the LORD God—my God—will be with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you, until you have finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD.
The song is based on
Psalm 139:17-18:
How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You.
and
Psalm 139:14:
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.
What's the takeaway message for listeners regarding the song?
God is so good. The Word of God is our daily bread. We need God’s Word every day. We find so much Truth in God’s Living Word. God will give you the Scripture we need for every circumstance. This song is all about having a strong faith. Without faith it is impossible to please God. Sometimes we have a tendency to think we can try to know everything. God tells us in the Bible that with faith, we can do anything in Christ. The theme of most of the songs on the album is about reaching out in faith whether in evangelism or in your chosen profession or about not being afraid to step out in faith and be used by God in ministry. We need to fully trust God’s Word.
Here are the lyrics:
You see my anxious heart
You see what I am feeling
And when I fall apart
You are there to hold me
How great Your love for me
Now I see what You're thinking
You say I’m beautiful
Your voice is my healing
Without You I just can't get by
So I'm
Hanging on to every word You speak
'cause it's all that I need
Hanging on to every word You say
To light up my way
Even every little whisper I'm
Hanging on as if it were my life
I'm hanging on
And when the darkness falls
I can't see what's before me
Your voice is like the dawn
Always there to guide me
Without You I just can't get by
So I'm
Hanging on to every word You speak
'cause it's all that I need
Hanging on to every word You say
To light up my way
Even every little whisper I'm
Hanging on as if it were my life
I'm hanging on
You know me better than I know myself
Better than anybody else
Your love is sounding like a ringing bell
Oh Oh I won't let go
Hanging on to every word You speak
'cause it's all that I need
Hanging on to every word You say
To light up my way
Even every little whisper I'm
Hanging on as if it were my life
I'm hanging on
God's thoughts and love for us are deep, such as cannot be known. We cannot think how many mercies we have received from Him. As the Lord knows us thoroughly, and we are strangers to ourselves, we should earnestly desire and pray to be searched and proved by His Word and Spirit. The first part of the chorus
“Hanging on to every word You speak, 'cause it's all that I need” has been resonating with me as I realize that Jesus commands us to trust God’s Word completely no matter our circumstances or personal distractions or concerns. The bridge has an amazing reminder
“You know me better than I know myself, Better than anybody else.” We can’t know everything and we are not in control, but trusting God gives us assurance that we don’t have to be afraid. God will be there to pick us up when we fall. The challenge for me when I listen to this song is pick an area of my life that I’ve been trying to control and instead of thinking I have the answer, I’m
“Hanging on to every word You say, To light up my way” and putting all of my hope and trust in God’s Word. As Britt says in “Walk On The Water,”
