It all began when Ben Richter (Lead Vocals / Guitars) and Geoff Ashcraft (Guitar) left behind their home of Texas to land in Atlanta, GA where Josh (drums) and Chris (bass) also joined to form the band. Right around that time, Josh spent a couple weeks in Timisoara, Romania on a mission trip and heard an amazing story of that nation while in the center square. In 1989, communism was overthrown in that very town square by what began as just a small group of Christians gathering to protest. That night a man took Josh around the corner to show him "the museum." It was a small building built to contain the things left behind, the evidence there had been a Revolution. The band would be called The Museum.
I got the great opportunity to interview lead singer Ben Richter about his song, “My Help Comes From The Lord.”
In the album’s first single, “My Help Comes From The Lord,” are there any personal applications regarding your walk as a Christian?
We know our music will eventually fade, but it's our hope that our songs are evidence of the fact that Christ has done a revolution in our hearts and we're forever changed because of it.
While reading Psalm 121, I connected with the words,
“Maker of heaven, Giver of life / You are my strength, my song in the night, My refuge, my shelter now and forevermore / My help comes from the Lord.”
The Lord will protect your life. He will watch over your coming and going both now and forever. It is a great reminder that when we lift our eyes out of the darkness and focus on Him, our faith will be strengthened.
Which Bible verses go with the song?
All of
Psalm 121: I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; The LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore.
How can listeners apply this message in their walks as Christians?
I believe the local church is the hope of the world, therefore it has to be at the center of our ministry. When we think of our mission as The Museum, we always come back to the Hillsong lyric:
Let justice and praise become my embrace. As a band and as individuals we want to see justice come to the overlooked and to see God’s kingdom come in our lives. We are realizing it’s the things we leave behind that make a difference, the evidence that Jesus has changed us from the inside out and given us the rescue mission to go and change the world.
Here are the lyrics:
When sorrows come and hope seems gone
You're the rock I rest upon
When waters rise and I can't breathe
You're the love that rescues me
Out of the darkness
It lifts up my eyes
Unto the hills I feel my faith rise
Maker of heaven
Giver of life
You are my strength, my song in the night
My refuge, my shelter, now and forevermore
My help comes from the Lord
When I'm broken, scarred by sin
Death gives way to life again
When I suffer, when I'm bound
In You I'm free, In You I'm found
Out of the darkness
It lifts up my eyes
Unto the hills I feel my faith rise
Maker of heaven
Giver of life
You are my strength, my song in the night
My refuge, my shelter, now and forevermore
My help comes from the Lord
Out of the darkness
It lifts up my eyes
Unto the hills I feel my faith rise
Maker of heaven
Giver of life
You are my strength
You're my refuge now and forevermore
Out of the darkness
It lifts up my eyes
Unto the hills I feel my faith rise
Maker of heaven
Giver of life
You are my strength, my song in the night
My refuge, my shelter, now and forevermore
My help comes from the Lord
My help comes from the Lord
Here’s Matthew Henry’s commentary on Psalm 121:
We must not rely upon men and means, instruments and second causes. Shall I depend upon the strength of the hills? Upon great men? No, my confidence is in God only. Or, we must lift up our eyes above the hills; we must look to God who makes all earthly things to us what they are. We must see all our help in God; from Him we must expect it, in His own way and time. This Psalm teaches us to comfort ourselves in the Lord, when difficulties and dangers are greatest. It is almighty wisdom that contrives, and almighty power that works the safety of those that put themselves under God's protection.
This is one of my favorite songs of the year and I fully expect The Museum to be nominated for best new artist and this song to be nominated for best worship song. I can’t get enough of the Biblical truth of the song and I love when artists take Gods’ Word from the Bible and turn it into a great and catchy song filled with truth. I sing this song to God with all of my heart and know that He is my strength and my song! This timeless passage, Psalm 121, has application for us today as we live in uncertain times. Know that God is your refuge and your help comes from the Lord. Amen.
