Contemporary artist Colton Dixon is back with new music. His latest song, "Rest of My Life," continues his streak of uplifting anthems. The track showcases his signature sound while delivering a heartfelt message about trust and surrender.
Dixon’s journey has been remarkable since his memorable run on American Idol Season 11, where his seventh-place finish shocked fans. His debut full-length album, A Messenger, introduced hits like "You Are" and "Never Gone," drawing from the Bible verse John 13:16. He followed that up with his sophomore album, Anchor, which included "Through All Of It" and "More of You."
Over the years, Dixon has continued to release hit singles such as “All That Matters,” “The Other Side,” and his Atlantic Records successes, “Miracles,” “Made to Fly,” “Build a Boat,” “My Light,” and “Up + Up.” With "Rest of My Life," he adds another powerful song to his catalog, giving listeners another reason to be inspired. I had the chance to speak with Colton in person before Winter Jam in Reading, Pennsylvania, to hear more about the inspiration behind the song.
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
Sometimes, a song takes on a life of its own. When we wrote "Rest of My Life" early last year, it was simply a reflection of my journey—when I came to faith when I met Jesus and when He met me—knowing that life would never be the same. We never planned for it to be in a movie, but now, seeing it become part of SIGHT, I hope both the song and the film make a powerful impact on the world.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Philippians 4:13 (NKJV): “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Romans 8:28 (VOICE): “We are confident that God can orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan.”
Philippians 4:11 (VOICE): I am not saying this because I am in need. I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances.
1 Peter 5:7 (NKJV): “Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
Psalm 55:22 (NIV): “Cast your cares on the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.”
Proverbs 3:5-6(NKJV): "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."
2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV): "For we walk by faith, not by sight."
Romans 8:28 (VOICE): “We are confident that God can orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan.”
1 Corinthians 13:12 (NKJV): "For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. I know in part, but then I shall know just as I am known."
Hebrews 11:1 (NLT): "Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see."
What is the takeaway message?
I had the chance to meet Dr. Ming Wang at the SIGHT premiere, and even in just a brief one-on-one conversation, I was deeply inspired. His dedication to his calling was evident, but even more so was his immense love for Jesus—it radiated from him.
The movie SIGHT and this song are powerful reminders that we are not limited by what we can see. We are called to walk by faith, not by sight.
Lyrics
Spent most of my life Killin’ my time on the sidelines wishin’ I Had a purpose had a reason had a why I was searching with a blindfold In the dark Til I met you and you rescued my heart Was lost and found Was blind but now I’ll never be the same
For the rest of my life I’m gonna reach higher I’m gonna live for what I believe Everyday three sixty-five right up until the day that I die In every moment be everything you made me to be I’m not afraid with you right by my side for the rest of my
See it clearer in the mirror eyes are open Cuz it’s in Him that I’m placing all my hope in Yeah, you loved me first now my universe is and will always be yours
For the rest of my life I’m gonna reach higher I’m gonna live for what I believe Everyday three sixty-five right up until the day that I die In every moment be everything you made me to be I’m not afraid with you right by my side for the rest of my life
I was dying only trying to survive But now I’m thriving living like I am alive Ain’t it crazy how in the blink of an eye You could change me for the rest of my life life
I’m gonna reach higher I’m gonna live for what I believe Everyday three sixty-five right up until the day that I die In every moment be everything you made me to be I’m not afraid with you right by my side for the rest of my life
Closing Thoughts
"Rest of My Life" is a convicting and sobering reminder that God allows trials to draw us closer to Him. It speaks to the reality that once the light of the Holy Spirit is within us, we are called to reflect that light in our daily lives—not just in worship but in everything we do. Every interaction becomes an opportunity to demonstrate His love when we live for God's glory.
At its core, this song is about surrender—letting go of our worries, anxieties, and need for control and trusting God’s greater plan. He is the source of all hope, and it’s not about what we do but about believing in Him. Faith means relying on the unseen and walking forward even when we don’t have all the answers. As the song declares, “I was dying only trying to survive, but now I’m thriving, living like I am alive.” It’s a powerful testimony of transformation—moving from simply surviving to truly living in Christ.
We are all a work in progress, and God is still writing our stories of redemption. He promises to complete the good work He has begun in us. He calls us to trust Him, knowing that He is faithful. Are we allowing the Holy Spirit to move in our lives? Are we making time to listen to Him? He longs to walk beside us, to hear from us, and to set us free.
With everything happening in the world, we need the encouragement that God is with us and that we are never alone. "Rest of My Life" reminds us that faith means trusting God’s plan, even when different from our own. He is the author of our lives and knows what’s best for us. Do we want to hold on to control, or will we let Him lead?
This upbeat, powerful song serves as a reminder of God's unwavering love. Colton Dixon’s music has always pointed to faith and hope, and "Rest of My Life" is no exception. As the lyrics declare, be everything you made me to be in every moment. I’m not afraid of you right by my side again for the rest of my life. Amen to that.
