BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#154 - "Let It Roll" by Superchick
Superchick bassist Matt Dally talks about his solo breakout, "Let It Roll," from the band's latest project, Reinvention.

With their latest project Reinvention, Grammy-nominated Superchick goes back to the studio to reinvent their favorite songs. Drawing inspiration from the 100+ TV shows, video games and movies that use their music, Superchick has created a soundtrack album for fast car chases, giant fighting robots, teen romance and bad guys walking in slow motion. Three new singles including "Still Here" and a solo breakout from bassist Matt Dally entitled "Let It Roll" accompany nine reinventions pulled from every album in the band's discography.

"These are songs we love; it means a lot to us to get the chance to go back into the studio as a band and rebuild them from the ground up. We have the technology. We can make them better, stronger, louder," says Max Hsu, the band's founder, producer and studio recluse.

I got the chance to interview Matt Dally about “Let It Roll.” Here are the answers to the questions I asked Matt.

Please tell me the messages behind the song “Let It Roll.”

Life is beautiful, but we often forget that. One of the easiest ways we rob ourselves of joy is to spend our time worried or stressed out. When I look back on the times when I was stressed out in the past, I realize that almost none of my worrying and freaking out was helpful or even necessary. I used to love the parable of the ant and the cricket. I vowed not to be the cricket singing life away while the clever ant stored up food for the winter. It is certainly a good thing to prepare, but the lie in the ant and the cricket is that we have control. As anyone who has cancer will tell you, we have no control--we only have each day we are given and the only thing we control is how much we enjoy it. God commands us not to worry.

Did you base the song on any Bible verses?

Matthew 6:25-26: Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

What's the take-away message for listeners?

God commands us to not be angry. It comes down to us wanting to be in control. Sin is pride and comes from us telling God that we’re in control. It took me a long time to understand that joy is a discipline, that you can teach yourself to focus on what is important. You only get so many beautiful spring days in your life and each minute that ticks by is time we will never get back. Let’s use those minutes well. May we all live in joy and beauty.

Here are the lyrics:

We let it roll, we let it ride
We don't take it home
So we can sleep at night
We let it go, we let it slide
We don't take it home
So we can live our lives

We let it roll, we let it ride
We don't take it home
So we can sleep at night
We let it go, we let it slide
We don't take it home
So we can live our lives

Oh Mr. Worry, I hate how you lie to me
Always showing me the fears that might come to be
I can lose today in tomorrow's anxiety
Selling me the lie
It was safe where we used to be
Honestly, I look back and see the truth
My whole life in the hands of God my proof
I hold to this truth I know
So the fear, I can let it go

So shh shh
Mr. Worry quiet down
'Cause shh shh
You can never bring us down

We let it roll, we let it ride
We don't take it home
So we can sleep at night
We let it go, we let it slide
We don't take it home
So we can live our lives
(repeat)

Quick Mr. Anger, you know how to get to me
Always cut me off in the lane
That's in front of me
Now you're in my head all day
And you're running me
Now I'm at home yelling at my whole family
But when tomorrow comes I will see the truth What I hold inside hurts only me, not you
So for the ones I love and know

Mr. Anger, I let you go
So shh shh
Mr. Anger quiet down
'Cause shh shh
You can never bring us down

We let it roll, we let it ride
We don't take it home
So we can sleep at night
We let it go, we let it slide
We don't take it home
So we can live our lives
(repeat)

Worry never never
Added a day to my life ever
It just robs me of today and brings me down
So come what may whatever
The truth has set me free forever
And the burdens of my life, I lay them down

We let it roll, we let it ride
We don't take it home
So we can sleep at night
We let it go, we let it slide
We don't take it home
So we can live our lives
(repeat)

“Let It Roll" is a song that has really spoke to me from this album. It has become my favorite song by Superchick and singing along with this great song is a daily reminder to not get angry and not to worry. We have to stop struggling and trying to do everything on our own, as God is good and wants the best for us who love Him. Jesus reminds us to not worry, you can’t add an hour to your life by worrying. God provides for all of us. Particularly at this time of economic crisis, people are stressed and worried. Unfortunately people put trust and foundation in their financial security which is where they find peace. At a time when financial stress and looking for security in earthly things is shaky at best, I can lay down my worry and plans and put my hope in God.

You can listen to the song here.

Here’s a great quote: "I have been through many terrible things in my life, some of which have actually happened to me.” –Mark Twain
