BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#151 - "Kingdom And A King" by Robbie Seay Band
NRT contributor Kevin Davis continues his "Behind The Song" devotional series, speaking with Robbie Seay about his band's latest song, "Kingdom And A King."

Robbie Seay Band makes their home in Houston, Texas where they work, serve and love their local community. The band leads worship at Ecclesia, a church in the Montrose area of Houston where Robbie's brother, Chris Seay, is the teaching pastor. Robbie and his brother started the church and have watched God do some amazing things throughout the last several years. Many of the songs Robbie Seay Band writes and performs are inspired by events and people within Ecclesia and the community there, so his albums are testimonies of God’s faithfulness, our humanity and how they intertwine as we live our lives.

Robbie’s new studio album, Miracle is just that--an honest and real collection of songs oozing with the vibe of Robbie’s laid back vocals providing music fans with lyrics that encourage, strengthen, and challenge believers.

I got the chance to interview Robbie Seay about the song “Kingdom And A King.”

Please tell me the personal story behind writing this song.

The song had been stirring in me in a lot of ways. I love government and our history, although politics wears me out. If the song is just for me, that’s great. If it’s for the broader church, that’s great too. Really, this song is a reminder for me to step back politically and think about where I align my beliefs. Don’t get me wrong, we live in an amazing place. I just returned from Haiti, and I thank God that we have a government that is elected by the people. I also know that for me, I can get consumed in political motivations. The song is a Kingdom statement, not a political statement. We should all, as Christians, know that God’s Kingdom is greater than our political system. The song is a worship song to declare that we’re citizens of God’s Kingdom as believers. I personally had relied in the past on waiting for the government to provide for people in need and I realized that the church needs to take care of the poor. As believers, we can all make a major difference. My wife and I are in training to become foster parents. If just one family in each church became a foster parent, we could take in an amazing number of children, there’s that many churches in America. If we don’t care for the children and the homeless people on the streets of Houston where I live, then we’re not living for the Kingdom.

Please tell me about any Bible verses that you used to write the song.

Luke 14:7-14: When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable: "When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, 'Give this man your seat.' Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, 'Friend, move up to a better place.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow guests. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." Then Jesus said to his host, "When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

What do you consider to be the take-away message for listeners?

I was just in Haiti and I met this woman who is a great singer. She lost her husband and her five children and was personally injured. This woman who lost everything in the earthquake was still faithful and she sang to Jesus in a worship service at the hospital. I really got a glimpse of the Kingdom. God is near to her and to see her sing and lead us in worship she really displayed for me the beauty and hope of Christ. None of the people I met in Haiti are trusting in their government to provide for them. They have a corrupt government and they are in need. I wrestle with the idea that Jesus would come to visit my neighborhood. In the Bible, Jesus hung out with criminals and outcasts. Jesus didn’t come to hang out with politically powerful people or celebrities, He came to hang out with the lost and the broken.

Here are the lyrics:

My heart is beating faster in my chest
As I sing of where my loyalties will rest
To never wait on the governments to move
As the broken and the poor cry out for You

For the kingdom and the King
For His glory we will sing
for the rescue of our souls
He has come

For the kingdom and the cross
Oh the triumph and the loss
Love has broken through and I'm redeemed
Through the kingdom and the King

Oh God may we be focused on the least
A people balancing the fasting and the feast
A call to give and to serve and celebrate
For You are great, oh my God You are great
So our prayer is to know
And love You above all
May we be the ends to free them we are called

For the kingdom and the King
For His glory we will sing
for the rescue of our souls
He has come

For the kingdom and the cross
Oh the triumph and the loss
Love has broken through and I'm redeemed

And our hope is not in this sin
Oh not in these walls
Not in these things
And we rest for knowing Your love
Has called us to mend
Called us to sing
Sing, Sing
And the people will sing
They will sing, sing, sing
For the people will sing for the king
For the King, for the King

For the kingdom and the King
For His glory we will sing
for the rescue of our souls
He has come

For the kingdom and the cross
Oh the triumph and the loss
Your Love has broken through and I'm redeemed

For the kingdom and the King
For His glory we will sing
for the rescue of our souls
He has come

oh the kingdom and the cross
Oh the triumph and the loss
Your Love has broken through and I'm redeemed
for the Kingdom and the King
The King, The King

And the people will sing
They will sing, sing, sing
The people will sing
For the king, For the King, for the King

“Kingdom And A King” talks about the church moving together to reach those in need. The song is quickly becoming my favorite song on the album as in this era of political uncertainty the cry of my heart is to be a citizen of Heaven and to serve my King. We as a church need to provide for the people who need us. In the song the lyrics focus on the broken and the poor and a prayer that we may be focused on the least. This song so accurately reflects my feelings of loyalty to my King Jesus. We can’t wait for the government to move, we need to be citizens of Heaven and focus on the needs that are all around us.
