This was the second time I’ve attended the
Revelation Generation Festival, historically held on the weekend before Labor Day. I’ve always been interested in the lineup of artists but my family tends to be busy that weekend. Thankfully, I was able to attend both days of the festival this year and was able to get the privilege to see several artists I’ve always wanted to see in concert on Saturday, September 4, 2010 starting with
Britt Nicole.
Britt was a great way to start off an amazing festival as she has so much energy and enthusiasm personally and in her songs. That was captured perfectly in her set which started with the upbeat pop songs,
"Welcome To The Show" and
"Like A Star" which are both from her last album,
The Lost Get Found. My two oldest daughters, Natalie and Cassandra, attended RevGen with me and they absolutely loved Britt’s opening set.
She slowed down the tempo and encouraged us to all worship with her next song,
“Set The World On Fire,” which is an incredible song from her
first album. The gathering crowd was starting to get into the worshipful atmosphere of the event. Britt continued with her up tempo songs
“Headphones,” “Hanging On” and
“How We Roll,” which are all fun and the dancing and jumping up and down with Britt was infectious. I kept admiring throughout her set just how powerful Britt’s vocals were over the top of her excellent band. No song better displayed the worshipful feel of her set than her #1 hit song
“Walk On The Water.” The song was recently featured on
The Biggest Loser and is a fantastic worship anthem where Britt urges believers,
“don’t be afraid to move, if faith is all it takes, then you can walk on the water too.”
Britt's favorite scripture is
1 Chronicles 28:20 which she says reminds her daily of God's calling on her life. Britt closed her great set with
“The Lost Get Found” which, in Britt’s words, is “simply about being who we are called to be as Christians, and through that, seeing the lost get found. I believe that when we become who we are called to be, the lost will come to know God. They will see that God is real, and that His love is greater than any problem, any fear, any sickness.” It has a catchy upbeat tempo and has a very convicting message.
Britt has really emerged as one of the top female vocalists in any genre. Fans of stellar vocals shouldn't miss out on Britt Nicole. Look out for one of the biggest voices in all of Christian music.

The crowd was certainly ready for
BarlowGirl as they started their six song set. I recently saw them perform an
indoor acoustic set so I was excited to hear them perform “plugged in” at an outdoor festival.
BarlowGirl started their great set with
Love & War album opener,
"Come Alive" with the cry to
“wake up, get out there’s no time to waste now” which really gets to the heart of the matter including the charge to
“be the change we’ve all been waiting for.”
At this point, the sisters introduced themselves and then Alyssa proceeded to explain the inspiration for their #1 hit song
"Never Alone," while playing the memorable piano melody. She explained how alone the girls felt while waiting for God to move on their behalf before BarlowGirl was signed to a record label. “Never Alone” is based on the loneliness and silence of waiting for God’s response. I got shivers as the gathering crowd of about 10,000 people were singing along to every word of the amazing hit song from their
debut album. When Becca hit the excellent guitar riffs, I cheered and she actually played her guitar so hard she ended up breaking a string during the song.
Alyssa described the theme of
"Stay With Me," with the encouragement that
“all I need is Your love pulling me.” It is another great song from
Love & War.
Lauren took a moment to read
1 Peter 2:9:
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
Lauren quickly got very passionate, to the point of raising her voice, as she talked about making a change in the world as a church body, following God's calling on our lives, and even devoting our lives to changing history. She closed her inspiring talk, leading into their call-to-action anthem,
"Million Voices," encouraging the crowd to sing along with their hearts as well as their voices.
Afterwards, Alyssa then shared about the inspiration for
Love & War's lovely ballad
"Beautiful Ending," which hits me even harder with the challenging
“it scares me to think that I would choose my life over You, My selfish heart divides me from You, It tears us apart.” The song is beautiful and encourages me to live for God. Hearing my two daughters sing this song next to me was equally moving, as I want nothing more than for them to know the Love of God.
“Open Heavens” was next and is another incredible song from
Love & War. The song ends with a gorgeous repeat of
“Hallelujah” which was such a perfect way to close out the worshipful set of amazing songs. They ended their set singing just the chorus of
"How He Loves." Alyssa encouraged whoever needed prayer or a dedication of their life to Christ to come forward and pray with some volunteers up front. They kept singing "How He Loves" and left the stage. It was a very classy exit and excellent and memorable set.

I’ve now seen
Skillet a couple of times this year, and each time, I’ve been with someone who was seeing them for the first time. Skillet has put on such an engaging and energetic rock show every time I see them and one can’t help but leave their show as a “panhead,” the name hardcore Skillet fans are proudly called. One man near the front of the capacity crowd was holding a sign saying “This is my 35th Skillet concert.”
Saturday’s incredible opening night couldn’t have ended with a better band than Skillet. They began with their hit song
“Hero” and the pyrotechnics and crowd reaction to this rock anthem was a great way to start the show. I could tell I was in for another incredible Skillet concert.
"Whispers In The Dark" had me wondering if I'd be able to hear the rest of the set. There were strobe lights and blazing fire bursts with some serious head banging and fist pumping. That led to
"It’s Not Me, It’s You” which is another fist pumping rock anthem from
Awake. That led perfectly into
"Comatose" which has an extremely cool intro with a violin and cello player and Jen Ledger jamming on the drums on my favorite song from Skillet’s last album. Lead singer John Cooper talked about how "every day there's a war for your soul, this world will tell you to live to money and power and not to live for Jesus. We are not ashamed." That led into the incredible title song
"Awake and Alive." WOW! This has become my personal rock anthem and is a fantastic reminder to live for Jesus everyday.
Next came
“Those Nights," which had the crowd of at least 30,000 in Frenchtown, NJ singing along, then went into a frenzy when John started recording the crowd and said "welcome to YouTube!" The energy just kept gushing with
"The Last Night" which John explained was written for a girl who wanted to end her life. He told her how special she is, and that her life is not a mistake. God loves her the way she is. This was easily the most emotional "head-banger" I've ever heard and it moves me every time I hear it. It’s an incredible song to hear in person and sing at the top of your lungs. Jen Ledger did a rockin' drum solo for about five minutes. Her solo got the place crazy, and then John came back and sang
"Savior" which might be the most hard rocking song ever by Skillet, and is an extremely intense song. I was jumping up and down with the entire crowd.
"Lucy" slowed down the tempo for a very personal ballad and was a cell phone waving song. One of the closing songs was
"Monster" which is a crazy song with awesome energy, and how John keeps any voice during the show is just incredible. Finally, the excellent cello introduction and then violin solo led to the rock classic
"Rebirthing”, which for me is without a doubt one of the all-time best album opening songs on any album and was a perfect closing song to an incredible first day of RevGen.

Don’t miss the chance to attend this great festival and to experience some of the premier artists in the industry. Over the course of two days, RevGen featured 60 artists on five stages. I know what my Labor Day weekend plans will include from now on...I’ll be attending one of my favorite festivals.
