Singer-songwriter Jordan St. Cyr first captured attention with his self-titled full-length album featuring standout hits like “Fires” and “Weary Traveler.” Drawing comparisons to artists like Brandon Heath and Josh Wilson, Jordan’s music is characterized by his strong vocals, personal lyrics, and a compelling testimony of grace that shines through every track. His follow-up album, My Foundation, is among this year’s most uplifting and thought-provoking releases, with standout songs including the title track “My Foundation,” as well as “Rescue,” “A Way for Us,” “Something Greater,” and “Life Before You.”
Jordan’s music is perfect for reflection, worship, or personal devotion, and his authentic, truth-telling style resonates deeply with listeners. His vulnerability and emotional connection in his songs draw people closer to God, making him a top recommendation for fans of singer-songwriters who wear their hearts on their sleeves. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Jordan about "My Foundation."
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
“My Foundation” describes my life as a house; it’s endured quite a bit, times when the wind and rain felt like it would never stop. But when the sun appeared, it revealed only one way I made it through the storm—my faith in Jesus.
As a family, we had to lean into faith, our foundation. My daughter, Emery, was diagnosed with Sturge-Weber Syndrome at birth, which developed into regular seizures as she continued to grow. When she was four, we moved to Nashville and connected with excellent doctors at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. And our now five-year-old baby girl has been seizure-free for over a year.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Romans 8:28 (VOICE): “We are confident that God can orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan.”
Joshua 24:15 (NIV): "But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."
Matthew 11:28 (NIV): “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”
1 Peter 5:6-7 (NIV): “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”
Psalm 61:1-2 (NIV): “Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the end of the earth, I call to you when my heart is faint.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV): "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."
Philippians 1:6 (NKJV): “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV): He told me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV): "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."
What is the takeaway message?
This song and album are about my family’s journey of gratitude and faith through music, with the biblical parable of the wise and foolish builders found in the Book of Matthew.
Because my faith parallels my being a builder, the song and album title, My Foundation, were obvious choices. Thinking back now, I recall my wife and I staying up night after night for weeks praying for Emery; I now rejoice for all the gifts He gave us through the process. This record is a statement of faith declaring not ‘what’ but ‘who’ my and my family’s lives are built upon.
For me and my family, navigating the chronic illness of my youngest daughter has been impossible at times. But what has made it all worthwhile is knowing we were never meant to walk in our struggle alone.
Lyrics
This house has seen some better days Like the ones before the storm clouds came Rain poured down, and hard winds blew Left me holding on for dear life
Thought it’d never pass, but then one day I felt that sunlight touch my face All I know is there’s only one way How this house survived
On Christ, the solid rock I stand All other ground is sinking sand No matter what, I will not be shaken The rains may come, the winds may blow But I will still be still and know This house is built on You My foundation
You’ve been building since before I was born Windows, walls, bricks, and doors This house ain’t perfect, got some work to do But this house is secure cause it belongs to You
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord And this house will not be moved Cause this house is built on You
Closing Thoughts
God wants to hear from you. Reach the point of being humbly submissive to Him. Don't be cautious. Take a leap of faith and ask God to reveal Himself. You won't experience true beauty without fully submitting to Him. God desires to be the focus of your heart, not just a fleeting thought. Our minds change quickly, but our hearts are more devoted.
We can face our daily battles with more courage and strength because we know that whatever the outcome, based on His promise in Romans 8:28, "God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose."
”My Foundation” is one of my favorite songs of the year. This anthem of praise is a daily prayer that asks God to come and change our hearts and lives so that our behavior and the way we live flow from Him living inside of us. What a powerful expression of what it means to accept that God never leaves or forsakes us. He is all we need.
Look for ways to obey God and offer your faith to Him. Read your Bible daily and get that reminder not to be afraid.
The process of sanctification—dying to sin more and more and living to righteousness more and more—is the continual renewing work carried on until it is perfected in glory. The main obstacle to this renewal is conformity to the world's ways.
Jordan St. Cyr, inspired by God, writes and sings his breath into anointed new songs to uplift and encourage us. You will be blessed by “My Foundation,” which is a standout, upbeat anthem with a powerful message: “As for me and my house we will serve the Lord/As for me and my house we will serve the Lord/And this house will not be moved/Cause this house is built on You.” Amen to that.
