BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#141 - "Guide You Home" by Remedy Drive
Remedy Drive frontman, David Zach, speaks to NRT contributor Kevin Davis about their latest single, "Guide You Home."

Word Records’ rock newcomers Remedy Drive, nominated for best new artist, recently celebrated multiple weeks at the top of the Christian Rock chart with their breakout single, “All Along.” Like most brothers, Remedy Drive members David, Paul, Philip and Daniel Zach had their fair share of squabbles growing up. With no television at home to distract them, the boys had few other outlets for their energies. Fortunately, they found common ground in their love of music. In fact, the first time they heard a guitar solo, they say it “made them feel alive.” And for four brothers who listened to a steady diet of Keith Green, it was a revelation that ended up having a profound effect on their future.

Lyrically speaking, the guys find inspiration in the everyday and always have a pocket-sized notebook nearby to jot down new observations.

“I want our listeners to be involved with everything we do in Remedy Drive. Our music should reflect real life,” Daniel Zach says.

Remedy Drive front man David Zach adds, “We’re all getting sold this lie that the stuff we own can make you happy and validate who you are. We want to sing about something permanent, something real that’ll never burn out or fade away. Ultimately, we want to give our listeners hope.”

The song, “Guide You Home,” from the recent digital release, Daylight Is Coming: Expanded Edition is my favorite song by the group so far. I had the great opportunity to interview David Zach about this song.

Please tell me about the background in writing the song "Guide You Home."

There was a children’s book I was reading to my daughter about a mother bunny rabbit and she had a baby boy bunny that kept running away from her. He said, "I’m going to leave you and become a ship." The mom said, "if you become a ship, I’ll become the wind and blow in your sails." Then the boy said, "I’ll become a mountain." And the mom said, "I’ll become a mountain climber." So there were all these crazy analogies and it got me thinking about all these crazy things that are happening around us, like the floods in Nashville and the earthquake in Haiti.

Like David says in the Psalms, and I feel the same way, the water is rising up into our souls. There is sometimes an overwhelming sense that I feel more lost than found.

Can you explain more about feeling lost?

The concept of being lost keeps coming up in songs we're writing lately because of our personal experiences as well as from the stories we hear from friends and fans every day. Some days, it's like we're ships at sea, tossed in the waves with no direction to get home and the compass is broken. We all know what it's like when the flood walls fail and the waters are rising up to our soul. I love that this song can be from the perspective of a father to daughter, a friend to friend or a Savior to a lost heart. “I'll be the wind in your sails... I'll be the lighthouse in the darkness... I will guide you home."

Do you have a life verse or any Bible verses you used in writing the song?

Psalm 69: 1-3: Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck. I sink in deep mire, Where there is no standing; I have come into deep waters, Where the floods overflow me. I am weary with my crying; My throat is dry; My eyes fail while I wait for my God.

What's the take-away message for listeners regarding the song?

I've grown more in my life by being a parent than anything else I've done. There’s an absolute dependence that they have on me. When my kids give me that helpless look, I know I need to be there for them. Entering the Kingdom like a child represents that desperation that children have when they need their parents. We need to have that same desperation for Jesus. The theme of our entire album, including the 3 new songs, is that daylight is coming. We’re all lost. “Guide You Home” addresses the fact that the darkness precedes the dawn. We’ve lost our way as a country, as individuals, as a corporate church body and as God’s people. When it seems like hope is lost, and all that’s left is despair, there’s still hope in God as he tells us He’ll guide us home.

Here are the lyrics:

Has your love run dry
A flower under the desert sky
withered before your eyes
Have your flood walls failed
Built so high still the storm prevailed
And the water rises to your soul

(Chorus)
If you're a ship and you’re lost in the ocean
I'll be the wind in your sails give you motion
I will guide you home
If you're too far out that you can't see the shoreline
I'll be the light house shining in the night time
I will guide you home

Is your compass wrong
Misplaced trust for far too long
Off track and you can't get back
Did you lose your calm
You're not sure where but you know it's gone
It's a sad, sad song playing in your soul

(Repeat Chorus)

(Bridge)
When the night is long
When the storm is strong
I will guide you
I will guide you home
(Repeat Twice)

“Guide You Home” is one of my favorite songs of the year. We should all be living for Heaven, our true home. Everything in this broken world will ultimately disappoint you.

The second verse includes the challenge of this song: “Is your compass wrong, misplaced trust for far too long?”

I love how this song challenges me to have my priorities in the right place. When it seems like hope is lost, and all that’s left is despair, there’s still hope in God as he tells us He’ll guide us home.
