Christian contemporary artist Jordan Feliz's latest album, Say It, comes from a place of pain and healing. It was one of my top 10 albums of 2022. Jordan has received several accolades in his first few years as a Christian contemporary artist. His debut full-length project, The River, features the We Love Award-winning Song of the Year, "The River." Since then, Jordan has released other hit songs such as “Next to Me,” “Never Too Far Gone,” and “Best of Me.”
However, despite the success, Jordan was going through inner turmoil. Say It is the result of the songwriter working through his struggles with God and reaching a place of true healing. I had the opportunity to speak with Jordan about his new song, "Somebody Loves You."
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
The heart behind “Somebody Loves You” is a reminder we all need from time to time—God loves you, and no matter where you are in life, you are not alone. In writing this song, we went down this rabbit hole of the fact that every day, you and I and our families and our friends go through a range of emotions. There are days of happiness, laughter, and blessings, and there are days of dealing with loss, sadness, depression, anxiety, and stress. I’ve been told He'll heal me if I allow Jesus into my hurt. I have spoken this truth to many people but didn’t let it into my heart. I had never put it into practice. God was showing me I needed that for myself, which led me to write this song about Him coming into my heart and asking Him to heal me and be able to release the burden I’ve carried about what I can do for God. I can do nothing for Him except be a light for Him. That’s what this song is about.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Psalm 23:1(VOICE): “The Eternal is my Shepherd. He cares for me always.”
Psalm 55:22(NIV): “Cast your cares on the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.”
1 Peter 5:7(NKJV): “Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
Hebrews 4:15-16(NKJV): “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Therefore, let us come boldly to the throne of grace so that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
2 Corinthians 12:9(NKJV): "And He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore, most gladly, I will rather boast in my infirmities that the power of Christ may rest upon me."
2 Corinthians 4:6(NKJV): "For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."
Psalm 139:14(NIV): "I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well."
Ephesians 2:4-5(NIV): "But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions---it is by grace you have been saved."
What is the takeaway message?
“Somebody Loves You” is a reminder that God has never left your side, and He never will. The beauty of being a believer is putting faith in God's sovereignty. It doesn't matter where you’re going, where you've been, or what you've said. There is absolutely nothing that will separate you from the love of Jesus. He’s been lighting up my heart, and now I feel whole. A weight has been lifted as I’ve released the wounds from my past. God wants all our trash. He wants us, and He loves us—all of us. His love will cure our past failures, as well as the bad feelings we have about ourselves. He loves you.
Lyrics
Feeling insecure Like you just might shatter And you’re still not sure If you really matter
All the wounding words That you hear so often But the silence hurts Cause you feel forgotten
When the world won’t Give your heart a home (You) may be lonely But you’re not alone
Somebody loves you more than you know Loved you enough to lay His life down Somebody loves you. He’s not letting go Everything changes when you find out Somebody loves you
What if God Himself Wouldn’t live without you Heaven knows you well Cause He talks about you
You are on His mind You’re a gift He treasures Made the earth and sky But He likes you better
When it seems like You’ve been cast aside Don’t it feel so Good to realize
Let it be the air your heart can breathe Let it be the truth your soul believes Let it wash every lie away Let His scars tell you everyday… somebody loves you
Closing Thoughts
Jordan expresses his walk with the Lord with transparency. The songwriter shares how he relies on God during his battles with self-doubt and anxiety. The beauty of God’s kingdom is that we can confess our negative feelings to one another and find comfort in scripture. Whatever you’re going through, remember that God's grace is more significant than your struggle.
As a believer, husband, and father, I connect with Jordan's sentiments behind the music of "Somebody Loves You." In this song, you can hear Jordan’s vertical expressions of relying entirely on God for His breath and the Holy Spirit to sustain him. I love Jordan’s intentionality and focus on God's provision. The song has quickly become one of my daily devotional prayers of thankfulness to God for showing me grace and forgiveness despite my failures.
We serve a loving and merciful God who accepts us as we are, not as we pretend to be. Something I love about this song, which offers praise and worship directly to the Lord, is its "sweet aroma" of praise. We can place our hope and trust in Him and Him alone with every lyric. No matter where we come from or our circumstances, we can all agree that glory and honor belong to God.
Ultimately, God's plan for us as believers is to use our circumstances to draw us closer to Himself. I have been challenged by whether I am living as though I believe every word of this song with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength and then represent it in my actions.
Even when you’re saved, you still might beat yourself up about failure. You might feel unworthy of God's love. That's the point: you aren't worthy. You can't earn grace. It's a gift of unmerited favor from God to His children. Romans 5:8 tells us, "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Despite your sins, God still thinks of you as His child: a son or daughter. Only Jesus can give you your identity. What a powerful expression of what it means to accept that God never leaves or forsakes us. He's all we need.
Have joy and worship loudly about the love of God in your life. His grace takes away anxiety, guilt, and shame. Know that being His is enough. This song celebrates the freedom we're promised in God's Holy Word. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." You’re a new creation on the inside. The Holy Spirit has given you a new life. You're born again.
Gratefully accept God’s love. Something that you freely receive by accepting Him as your savior. This song gives words to express gratitude. It’s a reminder to sing to God: “Let it be the air your heart can breathe/Let it be the truth your soul believes/Let it wash every lie away/Let His scars tell you every day/Somebody loves you.” Amen to that.
