"Windows Down" is a powerful song from CAIN about meeting Jesus and life change. It's the moving true story of how band member Logan Cain's wife Emily encountered Jesus and gave her life to Him, as the couple shares together in this interview. Let's unpack these lyrics and another salvation story from a well-known biblical character.
"I met You on a highway/Tears were in my eyes/And the dashboard was the altar/Where I gave You my life/Woah, the headlights were shining/There were angels all around/Oh, it still feels like holy ground/When I go drivin' with the windows down."
How did you meet Jesus?
"I was drivin' with the windows down, music loud/Lost as anyone could be/Prayin' that an open road would heal my soul/And fill the emptiness in me/I wasn't in a church/I wasn't on my knees in prayer/But I know I heard Your voice right then, right there."
What's your windows down story? How did Jesus first meet you? Emily's salvation story reminds me of another personal encounter with Jesus story you might be familiar with--the Apostle Paul (who was also known as Saul). He was a prestigious religious leader who didn't yet understand that Jesus was the Savior God has promised to send into the world to rescue us from our sins. As a result, he actively persecuted followers of Jesus, ripping them out of their homes and putting them in prison, even approving of some of them being killed. Until one day everything changed.
While Paul was traveling on the road to Damascus to continue his persecution of Christians, Jesus Himself intervened in Paul's life: "He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, 'Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?' 'Who are you, lord?' Saul asked. And the voice replied, 'I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting! Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.'" (Acts 9:4-6 NLT)
From that moment on, Paul's life was transformed by Jesus. He went from being a persecutor of God's Church to being a preacher of the gospel of Jesus! Christians in the region at that time were even shocked and amazed at what Jesus has done in Paul's life. Here's Paul speaking about their reaction: "All they knew was that people were saying, 'The one who used to persecute us is now preaching the very faith he tried to destroy!' And they praised God because of me." (Galatians 1:23-24 NLT)
Over the course of Paul's life and ministry, he would lead so many people to Christ, teach so many believers the Word of God, and he even wrote 2/3 of the New Testament we have in our Bible's today. Jesus is really good at turning lives around, isn't He?
Final Thoughts
Another thing I love about Paul is that he was bold in sharing his testimony. If you read the book of Acts in the Bible or the New Testament letters Paul wrote, you'll see how he eagerly shared what Jesus had done in his life with believers and nonbelievers alike, and he often overflowed with praise to God for what he'd done in his life.
When we listen to "Windows Down" and reflect on the story of Paul, it can inspire us to remember our own testimonies of how Jesus saved and changed us. And we can respond like Paul did: praise Jesus for His salvation and work in your life, and share your testimony with others, believing that what Jesus did for you He can do for someone else too.
