Taking center stage alongside some of Christian music's leading artists during this year's Winter Jam Tour, Swedish band, LIN D performed their infectious and personal new single, "Breathe Again." As a high-energy pop anthem, "Breathe Again" has quickly become a fan favorite in concert.
The siblings want to spread the message of faith, love, and hope for the future. in their lives, I had the great opportunity to interview Dennis, Emmy, and Ella Lindéh in-person before Winter Jam in Reading, Pennsylvania, about this song.
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
Dennis: This song was really just for us at first. We needed this message before we were ready to release it to the world. We had already been helped by the song and we were ready to have conversations because the song is based on Ella's story. We know when Ella sings this song, it comes from a real place. We can feel every word we are singing.
Ella: I hadn't ever been through anything like dealing with anxiety, stress, and mental illness before. This song came from a place of me personally dealing with a lot of anxiety. I had never experienced nerves or a panic attack as I've been performing since I was five years old. There's so much that comes with that and carrying the fear of the unknown. For the first time in my life, I suffered from panic attacks, and I was shaky and nauseous, and my body shut down before a performance. I needed a song as an outlet for me personally, and I hope it will also help and encourage people who deal with this too. I needed a reminder that there's something in every day to be grateful for. Sometimes you have to take it one single day at a time, and sometimes narrowing it down to a single breath and focusing on that.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Genesis 2:7 (VOICE): "One day the Eternal God scooped dirt out of the ground, sculpted it into the shape we call human, breathed the breath that gives life into the nostrils of the human, and the human became a living soul."
Psalm 150:6 (NKJV): "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!"
1 John 4:18-19 (NKJV): "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love because He first loved us."
Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV): "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV): "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
Philippians 4:13 (NKJV): "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV): But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.
What is the takeaway message?
Emmy: "Breathe Again" is us talking to our souls, like David in the Psalms. "Be still and know that He is God." Life can be overwhelming, and at times it can feel like you have a hard time catching your breath. This song declares that you're letting go of control, and letting God help you to "Breathe Again." It's been a long process watching Ella go through her illness and seeing her having so much trouble this past year.
Ella: We need to live by having faith that there's hope and there's going to be a positive outcome instead of always thinking things won't turn out the best. You can apply this song to your own personal story. Whatever you're going through, it may not seem like it is okay, but I truly believe that it will be okay, and God will help you breathe again. I didn't talk about my feelings before. Now that it's okay to be vulnerable. I need to give God full control and then I can fully rest.
Lyrics
Lately it feels like I'm treading water
I can't seem to ever get ahead
Lately it feels like I'm going under
I can't help but feeling overwhelmed
But even when the wind blows on every side
I know there's a sun behind the darkest skies
I can feel Your hand already holding mine
It's just a matter of time
Be still my heart
Be still my soul
I need to take some time to catch my breath
I give up
I'm letting go
You take control to let me breathe again
Breathe again
Breathe again
I don't know what I would do without You
Cause anytime I take control I fail
Jesus I know that You're always faithful
I've never walked alone and never will
But even when the wind blows on every side
I know there's a sun behind the darkest skies
I can feel Your hand already holding mine
It's just a matter of time
You let me breathe again
Closing Thoughts
LIN D has been writing and singing their breath, given to them by God, into stirring songs. You'll be blessed by this powerful song which is a stand-out anthem with a convicting declaration, "Be still my heart/Be still my soul/I need to take some time to catch my breath/I give up/I'm letting go/You take control to let me breathe again."
We need to remember that God is the source of all hope, and it doesn't come from anything we do. We need to believe. This song is a wonderful reminder for the believer that being a Christian means that we walk by faith, not by sight. Faith requires people to rely on faith in the unseen. We all walk by faith every day. The beauty of walking by faith and not by sight is that we can learn to trust God more fully with our lives. The key, as a follower of Jesus, is to walk by faith and to be guided in the daily walk by prayer and God's infallible Word, the Bible.
The song also sings about not being afraid. The Lord tells us all throughout His Word to not be afraid or worry. He knows we suffer from that attack from the enemy, who wants to rob us of our joy in God. By reading the Bible every day, God wants us to have a daily reminder not to be afraid.
The theme of the song addresses the universal human need to have God breathe through us and to inhale His love so that we can exhale it in turn. In the context of the song, once you realize that God came to rescue us, the love of God in our heart overflowing causes us to sing back to Him: "But even when the wind blows on every side/I know there's a sun behind the darkest skies/I can feel Your hand already holding mine/It's just a matter of time/You let me breathe again."
Lay your doubts and struggles at the feet of Jesus, and He'll take them from you and release you from those burdens. God wants to hear from you. We're called as Christians to believe in the freedom that we have on the cross of Jesus. We're free from our addictions, insecurities, and perfectionism. One of the lessons I've seen about life is that we shouldn't wait to fix ourselves before we step out in faith. Look for ways to obey God and offer your faith to Him.
All we need is faith and God will show us what He has planned for us. He's the author of our lives and knows what's best for us, much better than we do. Be encouraged by the light of Jesus shining in all of us based on our faith in Him and personally, I am moved to know that Jesus is shining in me for all to see and believe. You'll be blessed by this empowering song which is a stand-out anthem with a convicting declaration: "I don't know what I would do without You/Cause anytime I take control I fail/Jesus I know that You're always faithful/I've never walked alone and never will." Amen to that.
