Jordan St. Cyr may be a new name to some reading this, but he isn't new to a life of music. At the age of 14, he began leading worship at his church, and even earlier than that, he was writing poetry and music. You could even say songwriting runs in his blood since his father, a fellow songwriter, inspired him to begin pursuing music. Jordan was in a rock n' roll band playing songs for a while simply because he enjoyed it. But that was before he saw the transformations music spurred. When he came to this revelation, he simultaneously realized that this was more than a hobby; it was his life calling.

Since then, Jordan has been releasing music in the Contemporary Christian music realm, and not without recognition. The awards he has earned include the 2019 GMA Covenant Awards for Song of the Year, New Artist of the Year, Recorded Song of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, and Pop Song of the Year. I reviewed his Be My Defender EP back in 2021 and have been a fan ever since. Today we will dive into my favorite song from that project, in addition to his most recent release.

"Fires"

When the smoke billows higher, oh, and higher
And it feels like I can barely breathe
I'll walk through these fires
'Cause You're walking with me

This song gripped my heart from the first time I heard it, and its meaning has not diminished in the slightest since. Jordan proclaims an important message through the song and it's one I personally needed to hear. We are going to walk through fires in this life; it's just how it is and we can't always avoid them. Despite this, we are not alone in the fire, there is another in it and His name is Jesus. A lyric that struck me in this song is "I'm living out the victory/Doesn't mean I won't feel the heat." Although we are made new in Christ, we aren't immune to the heat of this world. But as Jordan continues to say, God will never desert us and we don't have to fear because we have Him right by our side.

"Rescue"

It's just in Your nature to step in and save
Because of You, Jesus
When I've been defeated
I know You'll pull me out of my grave

This song is powerful, accentuated by the featured vocals of Tiffany Hudson on one of the versions. In the first line I highlighted above, Jordan points out that Jesus's loving leadership is simply His nature. It is not an obligation or a burden. Furthermore, it is not something we must beg or wish for to come true. It is pure love.

Jordan goes on to describe the confidence he has that Jesus will be there for him. It is a special type of trust, to not just know of His power, but to believe it wholeheartedly. I am forever grateful that Jordan has chosen to use his position in the spotlight to share His love. I believe you will discover more of this hope and love for Jesus when you dive into his music. Have a blessed week!
