BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#123 - "Lead Me" by Sanctus Real
Sanctus Real's lead singer, Matt Hammitt, talks to NRT contributor Kevin Davis about "Lead Me"

Sanctus Real has returned with their new studio album Pieces of A Real Heart. This album finds the band maturing and growing as songwriters and individuals. Pieces of a Real Heart is the sound of a rock band retaining their aggressive edge but incorporating more diverse musical instrumentation and sounds-–as heard on the debut single “Forgiven.”

Popularly known for its captivating recordings and live performances, Toledo, OH-based Sanctus Real is all about living out their lives as “real” Christians, not only on the stage and as they interact with fans, but in the quieter moments of their lives as husbands, fathers and fellow believers. The band creates compelling, authentic music that lives up to the meaning of their name: to be Holy (Latin meaning of “Sanctus”).

The standout track, “Lead Me,” is further evidence of the band’s musical and lyrical growth, as the song follows a husband striving to lead his wife and family.

I recently had an opportunity to speak with lead singer Matt Hammitt about “Lead Me.”

Please tell me the story behind writing this song.

The song is a personal confession and prayer and proved to be a source of hope as my wife Sarah and I walked through a difficult pregnancy. I wrote the song after my wife implored me to be a better spiritual leader in the family. I think the challenge for me in the song, and hopefully for other men as well, is every time I hear it, every time I sing it, I ask myself, "what kind of man am I?" Not yesterday, not tomorrow, but what kind of man am I today? Have I invested in my family emotionally, spiritually the way that God has called me to reach out to them and to lead them?

Implementing this shift in daily priorities, I'm now walking together with my wife, Sarah, through one the most difficult points yet in our marriage. We are parents to Emmy and Claire, and we are currently struggling to bring to term our first baby boy, Bowen Matthew Hammitt. Bowen, which means "small victorious one," is 29-weeks-old this week and has been diagnosed with a serious heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart (HLHS).

Knowing Bowen is sick has brought me face to face with the sobering reality that none of us are promised tomorrow and has pulled that nagging ache, the one to make every moment count, straight to the surface of my daily life.

How can we pray for and support your family?

We got news about Bowen on April 12th of this year. Sarah and I walked into our nineteen week ultrasound excited to find out whether we were having a boy or a girl. Since we’ve already been blessed with two beautiful girls, we were excited to find out it was little boy! However, shortly after the ultrasound, our OB entered the room and said she had some bad news.

We know there are lots of challenging times ahead for us. We've created a blog to give updates on Bowen at http://bowensheart.com and would invite your prayers. We trust that God loves and cares for us no matter the outcome of this. We have so many things to be thankful for. God is so good.

Please tell me about any Bible verses that inspired "Lead Me."

A Bible verse that seems to go with the whole album is Proverbs 13:12: Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.

Here are the lyrics:

I look around and see my wonderful life
Almost perfect from the outside
In picture frames I see my beautiful wife
Always smiling
But on the inside, I can hear her saying

"Lead me with strong hands
Stand up when I can't
Don't leave me hungry for love
Chasing dreams, what about us?

Show me you're willing to fight
That I'm still the love of your life
I know we call this our home
But I still feel alone."

I see their faces, look in their innocent eyes
They're just children from the outside
I'm working hard, I tell myself they'll be fine
They're independent
But on the inside, I can hear them saying

"Lead me with strong hands
Stand up when I can't
Don't leave me hungry for love
Chasing dreams, what about us?

Show me you're willing to fight
That I'm still the love of your life
I know we call this our home
But I still feel alone."

So Father, give me the strength
To be everything I am called to be
Oh, Father, show me the way
To lead them
Won't you lead me?

To lead them with strong hands
To stand up when they can't
Don't want to leave them hungry for love
Chasing dreams that I could give up

I'll show them I'm willing to fight
And give them the best of my life
So we can call this out home
Lead me, 'cause I can't do this alone

Father, lead me, 'cause I can't do this alone

“Lead Me” is a surefire hit and for Matt and Sarah the song has taken on an even deeper significance to trust fully in God’s plan. Having been married for almost 16 years and having three young daughters, this song moves me the most on the entire album. This song is a “must own” for all husbands, fathers and young men looking for an honest portrayal of the prayer of a Christian man asking God to lead their lives. I could imagine this song being a worship anthem for Promise Keepers. Along with Matt, the challenge for me in the song, and hopefully for other men as well, is every time I hear it, every time I sing it, I ask myself, "what kind of man am I?" Not yesterday, not tomorrow, but what kind of man am I today? Have I invested in my family emotionally, spiritually the way that God has called me to reach out to them and to lead them? I am extremely moved by the song and pray daily for God to lead me so that I can lead my family. I also am holding Matt and Sarah, along with their two girls, in my prayers in the coming weeks and months. Please join me in that.
