BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#124 - "Sing Me A Love Song" by BarlowGirl
Alyssa Barlow of BarlowGirl speaks to NRT Contributor Kevin Davis about their single, "Sing Me A Love Song."

Since releasing their self-titled debut in 2004, Rebecca, Alyssa and Lauren Barlow of BarlowGirl have continuously inspired fans with such intimate portraits, as with their sophomore set, Another Journal Entry and with such bold challenges as 2007’s How Can We Be Silent. For BarlowGirl the focus is always on sharing what God has placed on their hearts. They continue to do just that with Love & War, my favorite overall album by BarlowGirl and one of my top albums of 2009.

The themes of love and war are seamlessly intertwined on this new collection. “There are battle songs about standing up for what we believe in and knowing what God is calling us to do and then there are a lot of songs on this album about love,” says Lauren. “The reason why we fight is because we love. We fight to do what God is calling us to do because we love God and we want to do the will of God. We really view our walk as Christians as love and war and that is kind of the dynamic of the album, exploring the two extremes.”

The album’s current single, “Sing Me A Love Song,” is a shimmering ballad that perfectly showcases the sisters’ gorgeous vocal blend as well as their emotionally weighty word play. I got the chance to interview Alyssa Barlow about “Sing Me A Love Song.” You can listen to our entire interview here.

Please tell me the message behind the song, “Sing Me A Love Song.”

The song really came about in a moment in my life where I was in a season of difficulty. Following God is amazing, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. Following God comes with ups and downs. I was in an uncertain season. I know God’s promises and what God has put on my heart, but I wasn’t seeing God’s promises being fulfilled and I was very uncomfortable. I was telling myself that I’m done with this valley and ready for the mountaintop. There was this day when I was writing for the album and I was struggling personally. I was journaling about wanting God to sing a love song over me. I wanted to hear God singing over my life.

I was picturing a mother and father singing a love song over their child while rocking them to sleep. God does sing over us songs that tell us what He thinks about us. David in the Psalms writes about wanting to know God’s thoughts about him. In that moment in my journey, I realized that I don’t know the outcome of my journey but if I feel God’s heart towards me, I have security. My security doesn’t come from knowing the answers or the destination but from knowing God’s love for me. That moment was what inspired the song.

Did you base the song on any Bible verses?

Zephaniah 3:17: The LORD your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.

What's the take-away message for listeners?

We look for so many places in this world for God to fulfill us. We want to feel loved and that we have a purpose. For me, I want answers. I want God to give me answers. In the music video, the girl thinks an eating disorder will give her control and satisfaction. Anyone can give an example in their life of what they use in this world to try to give themselves security and fulfillment. We make so many things our finish line thinking they will give us definition. What we all really need is to sit before God and hear those songs that He is singing over our lives. We don’t need to have answers, but we need to simplify things. We need to throw aside the things of this world that will never fulfill us and just listen to God.

Here are the lyrics:

Verse 1
the tension is thick in the air making it hard to see
the fear of what is to come and will become of me
I say a prayer, help me not run away
will You please hold me

Chorus
And sing me a love song again
say the words that heal my heart
sing me Your love song and then
let Your words remind me who I am

Verse 2
though You've never failed me before why do I feel betrayed
but If I'd close my heart to You now the darkness would have it's way
I crave Your voice help me not fall away
will You please hold me

Chorus
And sing me a love song again
say the words that heal my heart
teach me Your love song and then
let Your words remind me who I am

bridge
cause You are what I need
all that I want is You with me
cause You are what I need
and all that I want is You with me

As a father of three daughters, BarlowGirl is a band I’ve always enjoyed and I love how these sisters never fail to really grab me and fire me up to stand up for God and for my beliefs.

“Sing Me A Love Song” hits me again with the challenging lyrics and gorgeous vocals. The song is beautiful and encourages me how much God loves me. The thought that God rejoices over us with singing is incredible and He is worthy of all of our praise and devotion.

In his devotional book Glory Revealed, David Nasser says: “Every song we sing to the Lord is a duet and not a solo. The most marvelous thing about a relationship with God is that it is truly a dialogue. We aren’t just sitting here on earth worshipping a Creator who simply soaks up our love, rather He’s so involved in our affection, He’s in the midst of it.”

I love that God sings back to us.
