BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#120 - "Come To Jesus" by Point Of Grace
Denise Jones from Point Of Grace speaks to NRT contributor Kevin Davis about their song, "Come To Jesus."

Christian super group Point of Grace's new album, No Changin' Us, was clearly meant to be. Whether you want to describe it as God's plan, a perfect storm or simply fate, the natural evolution of the group's country-tinged sound and the expansion of its fan base into mainstream country is occurring exactly at a time when so many have grown increasingly hungry for music that offers hope and positivity during this period of uncertainty. While remaining true to their contemporary Christian roots, Point of Grace is now poised to reach a new audience with No Changin' Us, allowing the female trio to share their message of love and positivity with more people than ever.

Since forming at Ouachita Baptist University 19 years ago, Point of Grace has emerged as one of the biggest names in Christian music with their signature chill-inducing harmonies, anthemic choruses and powerful lyrics that poignantly capture life's simple yet vital messages. The two-time Grammy nominees have sold more than 6.5 million albums and earned 24 consecutive No. 1 singles.

I got the chance to interview Denise Jones about “Come To Jesus.” You can listen to our entire interview here.
Here are the answers to the questions I asked Denise.

Please tell me the main message of the song, “Come To Jesus.”

The message of "Come to Jesus" is evident in the song's title. Often we get depleted and it's when we're depleted that we call out to Him, but we don't need to wait. We can call out in the middle of everyday challenges. The song is a very simple message with an eternal value, and that value is having a relationship in Christ. Many people mistakenly believe that they have to be perfect because God only loves those who are good. Really this song is saying the reason that Jesus came is for the broken, for the depleted, weary and bitter. Don't sit there and start thinking, I've got to start acting better before I can do that. He came for everyone.

Please tell me about any Bible verses that you consider to go with the song?

John 5:5-9: Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.

What do you consider to be the takeaway message for listeners?

When we recorded our song “How You Live” we knew we wanted to make our next album with songs that were more rootsy and a country style and would connect to people. As busy moms who work and want to be the best moms we can be, the song “How You Live” really spoke to us. As we had some exposure on country radio we had the chance to open ears of a new audience who maybe didn’t know our music or about our faith. “Come To Jesus” was the last song we recorded for the album and we had 10 songs and knew we needed an 11th song that really reflected how we felt as a group. The message is similar to Carrie Underwood’s song “Jesus Take The Wheel.” The song is about the people that Jesus came to save, the weary, the broken and the weak. Jesus didn’t come for the perfect people.

Here are the lyrics:

This is for the weary and the weak.
This is for the desperate and ashamed.
This is for the hopeless hiding in the shadows
cupping hands around a flicker of faith.

This is for the one's who don't belong.
This is for the silent castaways.
This is for the sinner peeking through the stained glass
from a sidewalk in the cold driving rain.

We all fall down.
We all need saving once in a while.
You are not alone.

We all lose faith and lean on mercy.
And through our darkest night, He said He'd wait for us.
Just come to Jesus.

For anyone who's given up on God.
For those who tripped and fallen out of grace.
For anyone who's lookin to the bottom of a bottle
for the strength to make it through another day.

We all fall down.
We all need saving once in a while.
You are not alone.

We all lose faith and lean on mercy.
And through our darkest night, He said He'd wait for us.
Just come to Jesus.
Come to Jesus.

He did not come to raise the living or touch the eyes of those who see.
It was for the bitter and burned-out.
It was for the unforgiveable.
It was for the failure, standing on the bridge, because the guilt's too high a price to pay to live.

We all fall down.
We all need saving once in a while.
You are not alone.

We all lose faith and lean on mercy.
And through our darkest night He said He'd wait for us.
Come to Jesus.
Come to Jesus.

I don’t typically listen to country music but I’ve always enjoyed Point of Grace. “Come To Jesus” is a great song that reflects the best of what I’ve always enjoyed about the group and really demonstrates their unashamed faith in Jesus. As we discussed this song, I had just studied John chapter 5 which is about the man who had an infirmity thirty-eight years, and when Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” This song is for all of us who are broken and Jesus asks all of us that question. If you want to be made well, “come to Jesus.”
