Avary's music has unique emotional qualities that has created a loyal and rabid following of fans around the world. Of Men And Angels, The Rocket Summer’s spring 2010 release, continues to carry the torch for Avary’s unique and innovative style. I got the opportunity to interview Bryce Avary about "Walls," my favorite song from Of Men And Angels. You can listen to our entire interview here. Please tell me the story behind writing the song “Walls.” “Walls” is a song that deals directly with people’s depression. I wrote the song to help people deal with struggles or addictions in their lives. I used my own experiences to comfort others going through similar situations. The song encourages people to pray and reach out to God. People start tearing up when they hear “Walls.” I’m definitely aware of the kind of emotional connection we have with our fans. I just see that as God working through the music and I’m just fortunate to be a part of it. Did you base the song on any Bible verses?Matthew 6:25-26: Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than Mens Designer Clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? What's the takeaway message for listeners? Trust in God even when circumstances don’t make any sense. God is with you and you’re not alone with whatever struggle, depression or addiction you are facing. This song is about the importance of relationships and how God works through people. The song is also about praying over those struggles. God challenges us to be involved in each others lives. Here are the lyrics:The story of my life I can't quite comprehend So tell me if you know how it ends When everywhere you go feels like a mirror maze And you’re not sure how your stuck in this place And you got no where else to go And you're lost within your own home You're tryin so hard to win You keep tryin it's embarrassin And how you don't even know But you know you're off the tracks And how did you get in here? Thinkin "How did I get in here?" I'll help you break the walls down I'll help you break the walls down And bust you out and take you home Believe you me you are not alone I'll help you break the walls down Does anybody know where February went? I was hoping by now it would be the end of this When you open up a book and read a thousand lines But you don't really read you just move your eyes And you got no where else to go And your lost within your own home You're tryin so hard to win You keep tryin it's embarrassin And how you don't even know But you know you're off the tracks And how did you get in here? Thinkin "How did I get in here?" I'll help you break the walls down I'll help you break the walls down And bust you out and take you home Believe you me you are not alone I'll help you break the walls down I know this is random but just this morning I saw the sun Reflecting off the lawn and window Oh I don't know why but I thought you should know When you got no where else to go And you're lost within your own home You're tryin so hard to win You keep tryin it's embarrassing And how you don't even know But you know your off the tracks And how did you get in here? Thinkin, "How did I get in here?" I'll help you break the walls down I'll help you break the walls down And bust you out and take you home Believe you me you are not alone I'll help you break the walls down And all the weight that you carried will disappear And I will willingly embrace you so you lay your head So c'mon home, c'mon home, c'mon home God wants to see people come together and love each other. God calls us to be in community. Like Bryce, God has been present in my life and sometimes brings depression for refining purposes to show me how much I need Him. One of the reasons I love sharing the message “behind the song” is how after digging deeper into the meaning, the songs grow deeper the more I listen. This song is a great example of one of my favorite types of music, “emotional” Christian rock. The Rocket Summer is a great alternative for people who like traditional “emo” punk bands like Jimmy Eat World who don’t put all of their hope and trust in Christ like Bryce Avary does. Unfortunately, if you rely on yourself when you are depressed, inevitably you’ll get even more depressed. “Walls” is not celebrating being alone, or staying “lost within your own home.” As Bryce said, this song is about leaning on someone and letting God embrace you and “all that weight you carried will disappear.” As Jesus promises us, “My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Let God help you “break the walls down.”
