BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#113 - "Miracle" by Robbie Seay Band
Robbie Seay of Robbie Seay Band speaks with Kevin Davis about their first single, titled after their latest album, Miracle.

Robbie Seay Band makes their home in Houston, Texas where they work, serve and love their local community. The band leads worship at Ecclesia, a church in the Montrose area of Houston where Robbie's brother, Chris Seay, is the teaching pastor. Robbie and his brother started the church and have watched God do some amazing things throughout the last several years. Many of the songs Robbie Seay Band writes and performs are inspired by events and people within Ecclesia and the community there, so his albums are testimonies of what God’s faithfulness, our humanity and how they intertwine as we live our lives.

Robbie’s new studio album Miracle is just that--an honest and real collection of songs oozing with the vibe of Robbie’s laid back vocals providing music fans with lyrics that encourage, strengthen and challenge believers.

The title track and lead single, "Miracle," is a moving prayer to our Creator asking for Him to intervene.

I got the chance to interview Robbie about the song “Miracle.” You can listen to our entire interview here.

Please tell me the personal story behind writing this song.

"Miracle" came in the wake of devastating news. I remember getting a phone call from one of my closest friends. “Kristy has cancer. It doesn't look good, but we're believing for a miracle.” I wrote the lyrics the next day. I prayed fervently for God to intervene with a miracle and believed with my friend. Kristy, a wife and mother of three young boys, would die two months later. The song is not a promise of a miracle. It is, however, the declaration that we all will find ourselves in great need of one at some point in our lives--and in those moments, we choose to believe even when we can't see our hands in front of our face.

I was apprehensive to name the album "Miracle" as we’ve been skewed with negative connotations and the idea that God will give us what we want.

Can you share any Bible verses that tie in with the song?

Psalm 90 was a huge inspiration for this song.

Here are the lyrics:

Have you ever had a dream so big no one else could see
But you believed it was possible to be anything you wanted to
Believe me when I say that you are not alone today, no
I have been there too

Chorus:
When the whole world seems to turn its back on me
All alone out on the sea
I need a miracle, I need a miracle
When life don’t seem to make sense at all
I believe you hear me when I call
I need a miracle, I need a miracle

Have you ever stared death in the face
So close you could hardly breathe in
And you cry out to God for mercy to prevent the fall
There are very few words to say
When you can’t see another day
Oh, my heart beats again

Chorus

When the lights all seem to come crashing down
All alone, no one around
I need a miracle, I need a miracle
When life don’t seem to make sense at all
I believe you hear me when I call
I believe, I believe
And I believe though I can’t see
Now I believe, I believe
And I believe, I still believe

Chorus 2x

Oh, and I have been there too
Believe, believe
Oh, and I have been there too
Believe

The song is a very convicting and sobering reminder that God brings trials to remind us how much we need Him. This song and album also gives many glimpses of the authentic reality of life and our experiences, good and bad. Things don’t go as we want or even how we pray for God to work in our lives. For me, it is important to listen to this song in the context of the order of the songs on the album. The first four songs before “Miracle” celebrate God’s sovereignty, especially “Kingdom And A King,” which professes that God is the ultimate Ruler over our lives. I love how this song expresses the truth of our earthly challenges. This song, and Psalm 90, are great examples of how to pray to God and not lose heart “When life don’t seem to make sense at all,” but instead pray for God’s mercy and as Moses prayed, “Make us glad according to the days in which You have afflicted us.” As the song proclaims, no matter what your circumstances, cry out to God and profess “I believe!”
