Tim Neufeld of Starfield speaks with NRT contributor Kevin Davis about their song, "Rediscover You."
After the release of Starfield’s critically acclaimed I Will Go album, the band hit the road with a relentless passion to reach as many fans as possible around the globe.
Starfield is quickly becoming a global band on a mission to reach the world with a message of hope and salvation. With the momentum built, Starfield returned to the studio to craft their new album, The Saving One, which is a unique mix of songs delivering tracks that will be heard across radio airwaves as well as be sung in Sunday morning services, but most importantly, all will bring the listener closer to Christ. “Rediscover You” is my new favorite song by this great band.
I got the opportunity to interview Tim Neufeld about "Rediscover You." You can listen to our entire interview here.
Please tell me the story behind writing the song, “Rediscover You.”
The entire album was built on the theme of the song, “Rediscover You.” We’re kind of binge writers, meaning we don’t write songs all the time. We tend to sit down and write songs about where we are in our walks as Christians. We started talking about themes in our lives, and we realized that the honest nitty gritty of our faith was based on the theme of this song. As a “professional” Christian and worship leader for the past decade, who is supposed to have it all together and someone who’s supposed to be leading the flock in spiritual matters, I have less of an idea and picture in my life now than I ever did. At the heart of it, with all the trappings of materialism and prosperity doctrines, I need to get back to the heart of knowing and loving and letting my life be changed by the person of Jesus. I’ve come to a new understanding of what it means to have an intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit. Most of the time I find myself having a longing for wanting to hunger for God on a daily basis and not rely on myself. With that realization, we decided to start it off with a song called “Rediscover You,” with the only rule being to be completely honest with ourselves.
Did you base the song on any Bible verses?
Hebrews 12:1-2: Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
What's the take-away message for listeners?
We need to be on our face before God and weep and have a childlike faith. The more intellectual we make our pursuit of God, the easier it is to get caught up in our own understanding. We need to put a stake in the ground and realize that we’ll never fully understand God but instead just believe and accept and throw ourselves into a complete faith relationship with God.
I need to just admit
my faith is paper thin
I'm feeling so burned out
On religion
I say an empty prayer
I sing a tired song
I need to just admit that the passion's gone
And I want to get it back
You told me
Look for You and I will find
So I'm here
Like I'm searching for the first time
Revive me, Jesus
Make this cold heart start to move
Help me rediscover You
I want to learn to pray
The way that David prayed
I want my soul to burn when I hear Your name
I want to feel like new
I want to hunger for you
Bring me back to life like only You can do
Cause I don't want to stay the same
You told me
Look for You and I will find
So I'm here
Like I'm searching for the first time
Revive me, Jesus
Make this cold heart start to move
Help me rediscover You
Lord, I want to be Yours today
I want to know the passion of the saints
And how they were changed
You told me
Look for You and I will find
So I'm here
Like I'm searching for the first time
Revive me, Jesus
Make this cold heart start to move
I want to burn for You
Bring me back to life, Jesus
Help me rediscover You
We live in a time of unbelievable prosperity, and we are fed with a misguided direction to always expect things to go our way. God needs us to be honest with ourselves and not make everything about us but instead have humility and have an honesty in our faith. We should all “want to learn to pray the way that David prayed.” That type of lyric is so refreshing as I am completely challenged in my prayer life to live completely for God and “just admit that I want to hunger for You.” We have that cloud of witnesses looking down on us with the passion of the saints. Do you want to burn for Jesus? Do you want to “rediscover” Jesus? He’s ready for you and wants you to live for Him.
