Christian music fans come in all varieties. On one side of the spectrum, you have the casual listener who can recognize the major artists and big radio songs but rarely dives deep into an artist's catalog or keeps up on what's new.
On the other side, you have the hardcore fan who will consume anything that has "Christian music" stamped on it. And in-between you have the Sunday worshipper, who enjoys anything vertically pointed, alongside the genre conscience who gravitates to a specific type of music and rarely deviates from their favorite style.
And that's what I love about Christian music. There is literally something for everyone to digest. So which type are you? If you’re looking for more ways to improve your “fandom,” here are a few suggestions from myself and NRT contributor Brendan Burke.
It’s one thing to read an interview with an artist, sharing the inspiration behind their latest songs. But it’s another to take the time to hear their story firsthand. The NRT Now Podcast gives you that opportunity. Host Jake Frederick gives Christian music news, topics, and artist interviews directly from the largest Christian music site online, NewReleaseToday. What’s great is if you missed an episode, you could still watch it on demand.
And, NRT recently launched the NRT Podcast Network which curates many more Podcasts that are centered around Christian music. Dive in here to find your new favorite Podcast!
3. Attend A Stadium/Arena Tour
This should be the official rite of passage for any Christian music fan. Each summer and winter, tens of thousands gather in fields, boats, and amusement parks to experience hours—sometimes many days—of Christian music across multiple stages (think Winter Jam, Creation Northeast, or TobyMac's Hits Deep Tour).
From braving the elements at your campsite, to praising along with 50,000 others under the stars, to watching your favorite artists with Cinderella's castle as the backdrop, these experiences will be treasured for a lifetime. They should be a "must-do" on your list.
4. Connect With Other Christian Music Fans On Social Media
Share your music passion with others. There’s nothing better than talking music with others who love Christian music as much as you. NRT has a members-only Facebook group, Christian Music Fandom, where you can meet new people, connect with NRT staff, and even give input to upcoming articles. Besides, you might find some new releases that you didn’t catch online. And you can share music that has blessed you with others!
5. Create A Playlist On Spotify Or YouTube
Streaming services like Spotify—even YouTube—allow you to create your own playlists. If you’re looking for music to populate your playlists, then, follow NRT on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube for song suggestions. Playlists are a great way to discover new music and enjoy your favorites. They're also great for worship, sleep, and recreational activities.
6. Share Your Playlists With Family, Friends, and Everyone
Don't keep that shiny, rocking new playlist to yourself! Share them with others! Sharing Christian music is a great way to share the gospel. Get it out there via text and social media and encourage your friends to like and share as well.
7. Purchase a VIP Meet and Greet Experience With An Artist
When you enjoy a song, you're connecting to the artist–and you might not even know it. You feel moved. Attending a concert allows you to connect to the artist at an even deeper level; you feel even more moved. But what if you meet the artist? Attending a concert can change your life. But, if you want memories that’ll last a lifetime, upgrade your ticket to a VIP pass and get up close. You'll be unbelievably moved. (Enjoy the artist's music, but don't worship them. Save your worship for God.)
8. Listen To Classic Christian Music
I've (Kevin) been around Christian music for just over two decades now. My first taste of Christian music was Audio Adrenaline's Don't Censor Me, and I was hooked.
But now, I'm starting to gain some good perspective on the music I grew up with. It's harder if you're a younger fan, or just beginning to get into Christian music, but as a genre, our roots aren't that deep.
The Jesus Movement happened in the ‘70s and it wasn't until the late ‘80s and early 90s that Christian Music really started to take off. The music has changed, but the message hasn't. And it's always good to remember where we've come from.
If you’re only familiar with for KING & COUNTRY, Lauren Daigle, and Tauren Wells, then explore the catchy music of Christian veterans Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, DC Talk, and Jars of Clay. You can connect with your parents on an all-new level, while you explore, and they reminisce. We've got a great Rewind playlist here that's a good place to start.
9. Vote In the We Love Awards
Many award shows celebrate the artistry of Christian bands and musicians. But the We Love Christian Music Awards gives its accolades based on fan votes. This means you choose who wins the awards. So let your voice be heard and vote for your favorite song, album, artist, or band of the year. Voting is typically open each December/January.
Kevin McNeese started NRT in 2002 and has worked in the industry since 1999 in one form or another. He has been a fan of Christian music since 1991.
